    Yep, they really screwed up.

I’ve had people asking me what a dark anchor is - what’s it for?

The main story - from Molag to the war in Cyrodiil - is the main premise of the game !!

I am so glad that I started playing and did all (possible at that time) quests before One Tamriel!
And it's very sad that new players (at least those who care about quests) will never be able to experience quests properly :/
THIS is how you hook a player into the game, all the other starts were lackluster and had Zero direction.

    I agree!
When I started the game, this intro was no longer used (so I didn't see it). And even though I started in Coldharbor prison, and did everything in proper order... I was never personally attached to the main story, due to lack of proper introduction. Only long time after I have already completed it, I discovered this intro video... It was so awesome, and I regret that I didn't see it before starting the game! :'( No other intro - no matter how many fancy special effects they used in newer videos - has so much emotional impact on me.

A lot of people have lamented this problem since they implemented One Tamriel. They really needed to gate story quests so they don't become available until you've done the prior missions. Still do.

I remember doing Summerset, where one of the main enemies is a character you are supposed to have met earlier on Vvardenfell. However, my main character never MET that character on Vvardenfell... so how would they know him in Summerset? Why would they have any opinion of my character at all? Why would they be doing anything in Summerset in the first place?

It's too late now for many of us, the quest threads are largely broken. However, they can and definitely SHOULD clean up the mess for new players... especially with a free to play game and microtransactions. That business model relies on what they call the "churn," always looking to get new players to buy the random crap from the microstore, customer retention is not a priority. So, with new players being the priority, they need to get things straightened out for them.

This game is kind of like the Winchester House, in that it has so many additions over time that the cohesiveness has been lost. I think the part that has contributed to this the most is the insistence on changing how the game starts with each new chapter.

The PTS has an excellent start to fixing the start of the game. Now, they just need to add some meat to that part of the game. Perhaps an NPC that guides the player by say, asking them questions or telling them a story.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I think the original starter quest and base zone quests should be the only ones enabled by default, and enabling the prologue and DLC quests should be something you'd need to do in settings, and/or by visiting the DLC zone.

I doubt that will happen, though, since ZOS went to the effort of creating all those DLC starter quests...

It would already help if the relevant quest givers for the DLCs in the starting areas did not accumulate in important buildings such as the guilds or at traffic hubs. For the Greymoor prologue you can meet Gwendis somewhere distant from Davon´s Watch (although I also thought in that case once "Gwendis, you here? Shouldn't you be in castle Ravenwatch?").

these quests should not start at 1st alliance zones anyways.
It would help a lot with immersion.
Place them at other 4 alliance zones and that is it.

Whilst I agree that the starter quests are a complete mess, if you do Summerset before Vvardenfell, then the dialogue / story doesn't assume you know the person or have done their quest. It’s just another enemy without any connection to you. But it mucks with the timeline. 😕

And I know they want to sell expansions without telling new players that they should in fact ignore the shiny new area and go back through the main story, but the LEAST they could do is have an in-game list of the order quests should be done in to make sense (and there IS an order, despite what they might say)

As a base idea I don't mind the desire to integrate these starting quests and prologues into old areas, it creates a more coherent, connected worldspace; aka old regions have some interconnectivity with new ones. Which is good, imo. I don't think it's bad that you can get sidetracked while doing quests in Stonefalls and end up in Wrothgar, makes the world feel less like isolated land chunks, which is pretty immersive.

But that positivity is heavily outweight by how hard these muck up the chronology and create contradictory, confusing events, like the upper mentioned situation with Lyris, or smiliar things with Abnur Tharn, Sai Sahan or Gwendis. Or the latest transgression, the end of the story of Count Verandis in Markarth.

The least they could do is give these quests a new type of quest arrow (like how dailies and main quests have their own arrows) and/or add a warning to the dialogue option of prologue/DLC introductory quests so new players know it's the start of a new adventure and takes place later down on the timeline.

Best would be that plus restoring the Coldharbour tutorial (potentially keeping Blafiera as a new hub) and moving prologue quests with Lyris and co. from 1st alliance regions to the 5th or 4th. Still would have some contradictions but would be less confusing for new players.

For the quest-orientated game its quest sequence is a disgusting mess...

Throwing new players to the last location so they "enjoy" playing from future to past
Throwing all dlc prologues in their face so they does not understand whats going on
Creating prologues that break other quests... prologues they through into new players faces as soon as they start playing... so they stuck trying to play in order
Allowing players to speak with alive NPC after they kill that NPC, meet NPC before they really meet them at the first time or kill dragons before they even free dragons

It took me two characters just to start understanding what the hell is going in that game
With the first one i was doing Dominion quest line, then I got some quest to use a boat (I think) that brought me to Bleakrock, I start wandering around and found a quest NPC that greeted me with a statement that some fishermen pulled me out of water... Wat???
"If new player does not understand the quest mess that is new players problem"…

    __________________________Backstories:_________________________

Ras Kalik the Vestige, a renown Redguard warrior; He has been blessed to save Tamriel from Molag Bal’s destructive Planemeld while reuniting the Five Companions. His further accomplishments after defeating Molag Bal, has been to stop the destruction of Morrowind, the Clockwork City, return order to the isle of Summerset and create a new king in Wrothgar and a queen in Elsywer. These events have made him a living legend and continue to lead him into new adventures throughout Tamriel, as well as into the hearts of many ladies including the Elf Queen, Aryenn. Over many years of adventurous travels, Ras Kalik had become a loner, until he re-visited his homeland of Alik'r.

Alik'r and it's cities were overrun by the undead Ra-Netu and therefore he made an allegiance with Alik'r's own Ash'abah tribe. These Ash'abah with his help, cleansed the city of Sentinel in Alik'r desert and it's surrounding areas of the undead brought to life by the Withered Hand. After rescuing Sentinel from the undead zombies, King Fahara’jad’s personal bodyguard the Goliath of Hammerfell, who was given this name by Imperials in the region; was asked to assist the tribe after learning of the defeat of the Withered Hand to the Ash'abah. Kalik promised Goliath he would task him with fighting living enemies on the battlefield if he so desired. Goliath being a Yokudan warrior wields a massive sword in respect to the Ansei, a gift given by the Imperial, Cinan Tharn. Not many soldiers are able to wield double two handed weapons, but Goliath loves to get up and personal in a fight, so he also carries a giant maul, both weapons laced with magical flames.

Jux Blackheart is a master thief that masquerades as a Bard at the Sisters of the Sands inn, with his younger sidekick Lucky Hunch for pilfering and gambling during this time. Jux was known to infiltrate any towns bank vault he came across and even delved into Ayelid ruins without detection. Kalik can vividly recall the night he met the famed thief. Jux found himself rummaging thru a slightly inebriated Kalik’s pocket for too long, on a full-mooned night and because of his greed and the glimmer of his golden armor in the moonlight. He lost his left pinky fingertip as a lesson! But in return, he gained a new friend, as it was his first time since a child being caught red-handed...

Upon arrival back in the Alik'r after many moons of adventuring, Ras Kalik ventures to Bergama. Visiting The Winking Jackal, he runs into Jux Blackheart, who introduces him to the coin game Crowns vs Forebearers (Heads vs Tails) and Golden Dwemer (RBG).... Jux constantly takes gold from the unfortunate thru theft or gambling, his biggest gambling victim is actually his partner in crime known as Lucky Hunch the Gambler. Lucky doesn't mind losing any gold coins to Jux... as Jux saved him from Altmer slavers in Summerset, by stealing a key and sending him on a boat to the mainland years prior. Lucky spent years in slavery with Khajiits in Summerset and picked up the art of subterfuge, using illusion magic disguises and stealing there.

Kaotik Von’Daemon an outcast, and a half-caste between a Breton mother and a Redguard father. Kaotik become a pariah due to his conjuration of Daedra pets. He was taught healing magic during his childhood years by his Breton mother. His father due to Redguard customs exiled him from the desert, sending him by wagon caravan to be a soldier in the war in Cyrodiil. He happened to meet Kalik while traveling from Alik'r, during this long caravan ride the caravan he was in was ambushed in Bangkorai by a group of bandits. Kalik by chance was also traveling thru this area on his Auridon Warhorse (which was bestowed to him by his friend, Darien Gautier). During this ambush, Kalik was able to rescue five hostages from the bandits. Kaotik was the first rescued, and Ras Kalik also recruited him to be in the Ash'abah tribe. These core Ash'abah tribesmen may never be seen together in travel as they partake in their own adventures but they always know what each other is doing; as they frequent a hideout in northern Bankorai. Their hideout an old Orc castle ruin, is kept watch by Nuzhimeh and she passes messages written between them, and frequently they also enjoy her company and her bed.

The other men rescued were a Dunmer banker, an Imperial mercenary and two other soldiers, an Imperial and a Breton Knight, stating proudly he was an Akavir descendent. One of the Imperials, Cinan, claimed to be related to Abnur Tharn the Battlemage of the Imperial Elder Council (One of Ras Kalik's mentors in the Five Companions). Cinan Tharn was really Abnur's drunkard treasure hunting illegitimate son. He was caught smuggling artifacts out of the Ayleid ruins in Cyrodiil and the elder of the two Imperials was Tyrus Septim a retired Imperial navy battle-mage (now a Lycan mercenary living in the city of Rimmen) and guard to the Tharn family. As much as Abnur Tharn hated his half-sister Euraxia, he dislikes his bas†ard son Cinan more. Tyrus now a ruffian and privateer had been paid by Abnur Tharn to watch over Cinan as much as possible. Cinan Tharn a drunkard, loves to drink at least a quarter barrel of Nord mead before he raids various delves and dungeons for relics to sell on the black market. Cinan also plans to one day, run an illegal gambling ring... which he thinks will net him more gold for his wares.

The Dunmer captive shackled to the Imperials looked familiar to Kalik from his time in Morrowind.... and he recognized him as Tythis Andromo a House Telvanni slave-owner and banker from Vvardenfell. During a rough interrogation to Tythis, Ras Kalik learnt why the bandits accosted him. The racist Dunmer was providing slaves as soldiers for the Three Banner War. The bandits were trying to negotiate a lucrative ransom for Andromo and the Imperials.... Kalik did not need any of this gold and he could never set Tythis free as he did with the two Imperial soldiers. His past involvement with slavery and war crimes, made Kalik's blood boil. He chose not to execute Tythis, as he figured the worse punishment for this former rich and opulent slave owner, is to now be an imprisoned servant for Ras Kalik and the tribe.

Herzog Zwei the Genesis a reknown Imperial/Akavirri battle-mage. His roots going back to Akavir through his mother’s bloodline. (His mother is descended from the Akaviri, through Versidue-Shae, and his Imperial father met her in Hakoshae, while traveling) Herzog earned the nickname "the Genesis" from his father as a child, as he was his mother's first born child, and last, as she tragically died in child-birth.

Herzog was seeking to purchase an artifact from Cinan Tharn, before their capture and was meeting Tyrus while in Rimmen, who introduced him to Cinan. This artifact being the Ayelid artifact; the sword Sinweaver. After their rescue and the exchange of gold to Cinan for the sword he decided to slip away before Ras Kalik could question who he was, and why the Akavir descendant really wanted that sword. Herzog was headed to Nagastani — An Ayleid ruin in eastern Cyrodiil. He had read in scrolls that the Sword would give him magical powers to meet his mothers spirit, if he performed an Ayleid ritual at an old shrine hidden there. Equipped with the artifact sword, he was off to start his own adventure but Ras Kalik, did indeed notice the sword however and instead sent a letter to Jux Blackheart (whom also was interested in Ayleid treasures), to attempt to find Herzog and acquire the sword. (*Azani Blackheart in Elder Scroll's Oblivion is Jux's descendant some 747 years later)

And so the Redguard, Imperial and Akaviri men parted ways ... While Ras Kalik went off to Elsweyr to encounter the latest threat to Tamriel, with Abnur Tharn and Sai Sahan - - DRAGONS!! Little did Ras Kalik know a few people were awaiting him in Senchal besides Sai. A necromancer survived his attack on the Withered Hand, while in Alik'r. The necromancer known as Auriek Siet'ka is also following him to the land of the Khajiits and Cacique the Sage of Ius a Shaman mystic who has become attuned spiritually with Tu'whacca (a Redguard God) and Ius (the Animal God), after being burned severely by the escaped dragons in Elsywer, is awaiting his arrival also. Aurik is a soldier of the Daggerfall Covenant that was introduced to necromancy while in the military, even though this magicka art is not spoken of openly by most of the Military leaders. He came to Alik'r and worked with the Withered Hand before Ras Kalik intervened on their plans. After the defeat of the Withered Hand, he aligned with the Worm Cult, and is constantly adapting and perfecting his necromantic arts.

After his journey to Rimmen, Kalik heads south to Senchal, in the southern regions of Elyswer. This new adventure will also put him on a path to meet a strange Redguard man. The stranger which was infected with an untreated Peyrite disease and also was the exiled from the Order of the New Moon cult, due to his sickness. He originally joined the cult to worship Laatvulon, the green dragon, mistakenly thinking it was the Daedric prince Peyrite. This confused and suffering cultist is known as Tsar al-Bomba and he is on a path to spread the disease. He was originally infected in Orccrest while recruiting members there. Can Ras Kalik and the shaman Cacique cure this poor soul, only time will tell. Little does Tsar al-Bomba know, that his infection is tied to Vampirism, and eventually the desire for blood will take over his mind. Senchal also offers Kalik his latest love interest... Aeliah. Whom he fondly led thru battles with the Dragonguard.

After the trek thru the heat, tropical and desert climate of Northern and Southern Elyswer, Ras Kalik heads north to the cold mountain range of Skyrim. His companion friend Lyris beckons for him with a letter sent by crow...

Movárth Piquine - a former vampire hunter (now infected), within the Fighter's Guild (and a secretive necromancer) was in Skyrim working with the Morthaal Guard. On a patrol mission he was caught in Frewien's ice curse outside of Morthaal with the frozen undead. Movárth's vampiric infection kept him from becoming an undead minion to the curse. He was able to use necromantic ice-magic to encase himself safely until he was freed with Freiwen, when the Vestige Ras Kalik broke the curse.

Uri Ice-Heart - brother of Urfon Ice-Heart. The twin sons of Atli and Oljourn Ice-Heart. The Ice-Heart family are originally from Markarth but now reside on the Jerall Mountain range near Cyrodiil, with their younger sister Araki. The twins had joined the Winterborn Reachmen while living in Markarth. Urfon pushed west to Orsinium with the Winterborn Clan, leaving his family behind. Uri stayed behind with his parents and sister to live in the family cabin for safety, avoiding the Vampire plague infiltrating the Reach. After news reaches him and he hears of Urfon's death... Uri leaves and heads home and is seeking vengeance. Meanwhile, his sister has also moved on to Windhelm to join the Fighter's guild. He will visit his sister, once before going to seek vengeance and she will craft him armor mixed with ice, called Stalhrim armor. Uri fearing death, after his brother's passing, falls victim to the convincing talk of Movárth at a Nordic tavern, and will also becomes a vampire.

So I never play alts, until the past week when I made one. ZOS badly needs to fix the starter experience. Here is three examples...

    1. Starter zones talking about me not having a soul when I have not yet lost it. Can you imagine how this would confuse a true new player? But this is the smallest problem.

    2. I come to Vulkhel Guard for the first time. What do I find? People offering me quests for every piece of content ZOS has ever created. Are you kidding me?? I’ve got quest starters there from a DLC and the prelude to the same content in a few cases??? How is any new player meant to sort out this mess? And that with you not 25 quest slots.

    3. But here is the kicker! I get my soul stolen, watch Lyris swap places with the prophet, emotional swear to myself that I will find a way to save her. Next, I walk down memory lane with the prophet. I exit the harbor and immediately the psychic projection of the prophet tells me it’s time to rescue Lyris.
I think, “ok, good. But I’m going to get the fighter’s guild skill line really quick so I can be leveling that on the daedra I’ll kill.” I enter the fighters guild and who do I see??!! It’s Lyris herself recruiting me for another DLC!!! Are you kidding me?!

This starting experience is a complete train wreck! I LOVE this game. And I am embarrassed to get people to try it at this point knowing this is what they are walking into. It was confusing to me, when I can remember every aspect of when each thing was added. I can not imagine what a new player must feel like.

YOU let the dragons out so this is probably your fault too, Beja! *suspicious stare*

There should be no DLC enabled at all when you make a new character, not even dungeons or Craglorn or anything. Instead there should be a list in the same order in which the DLC were released that you can activate when you want to.

I think the fix should go to the extreme that, as a default:
    • The original opening to the game is restored.
    • You land after that in a starter area (not capital city), as originally envisioned, where you don't get all the requests to go to various DLC zones.

Anything else should be an option for knowledgeable players who want variety.

Admittedly, I have the bias of somebody who first played in the DC. So my first starter area was Stros M'Kai and my second was Khenarthi's Roost. Somebody who had the misfortune to start in the EP might disagree with me a little ...

I agree with this option,it's okay to be lead around by the hand by the game for the first 15 levels. For a new person this would help with any confusion. At level 15 when you get your second bar available there should be another little tutorial with the options to progress to other areas.

I agree, they need to restore linearity to the game. There would still be plenty of choice left over. There was before One Tamriel and I'm so glad I played through the base game with my first character before that awful update.

I don't play alternates much but once in a while I fool around with them. One of them started in Summerset and I've pretty much leveled him up to 45 or so just there. Recently I decided to start him on the main story, and the pacing is thrown off completely. Now literally every time I leave the Harborage the Prophet calls me back!

For the most part, the stories of the various zones can be played in any order, with a few dialog tweaks. The crucial thing is the relationships with the various characters. I started a brand new character the other day, and he spent some time talking to Lyris, and she spoke about events from the main plot (the Prophet, Molag Bal, etc.)... which the character hasn't had a chance to start, yet.

Similarly (and a spoiler warning here...), there are characters who appear despite having been killed in previous stories. For example, there is a character in Rivenspire who is killed late in the main plot. My main character has already done the main plot, and that character died... yet because I never did the Rivenspire zone story... he is still hanging around there. Then there are main characters you could have chosen to die as part of the main plot... and yet they appear in later stories.

It's a difficult thing to balance all the various stories and characters, I get that. I just feel not enough effort has been made to keep things straight.

Good thing I am veteran and can sort it out. A new player is just screwed.
Had a friend try the game a few months ago. They liked it, but due to no direction, lack of a good new player experience, and just being overwhelmed in general, she quit.

I also recently had a friend try the game. She said she was lost and hasn't been back on.

This has been my experience several times lately. I actually bought a couple of people ESO: Greymoor so they could try and get into it and all of them.. ALL have said they didn't understand what was going on, said it was overwhelming with too many choices right at the start, and haven't been back on since.

Stick all the DLC quest givers in the pub like all adventure games should.

"Hey, Bub...hear any good rumors about?" - Mysterious adventurer
"Well, there was this one thing..." - Barkeep

Or even a simple billboard that shows only a SINGLE quest marker would do.

YES - I get that ZOS wants new players to check out the new content but the Base Game Actually Matters because of all the skills lines, skyshards, and skill points! Despite all the DLC the game is very much centered in the base game

I agree with the OP 1000%, I have been complaining about this for ages. The game is a mess and I don't create new characters because it's such a bad experience. When I introduce people to the game I need about 10 min to explain to them this mess and which quests they should pick in their starter city and which to avoid. Endgame DLC in the starter city??? Just put them in the capital!

A friend of mine started recently and he was tossed out into the world, and harassed at every turn by quest givers.

He had no idea what was happening. I had been away a long time, and started a character about the same time, and fairly quickly figured out the hooded figure, (Hi Meridia) and did that, so I was able to help him out

I started the game 2 months ago, and the first thing I did was play through all of the prologue quests, because the prologue starts before the main story, right?!

It was a miserable experience, travelling vast distances with no wayshrines, then I did some searches and realised my mistake.

I didn’t quit the game, but I expect most players would have.

I haven't read through this thread yet, but I have to say one thing. It is very sad that this forum do not allow "bumping" threads. One thing are gameplay-wise features, about game mechanics and stuff and the other thing is continuity issues and... Well, all you said. I completely agree with your complains, OP, and think that devs of all sorts should come here and explain all this mess. Story- and lore-wise threads must be the first priority for ZOS because none of TES games is perfect, but we love these series for it's story and lore.
Even though TESO is a great game, it suffers from continuity issues that may hurt narrative experience and confuse lore-caring players. If we want TESO to be a decent exemplar in The Elder Scrolls series, these problems need to be fixed. Please, acknowledge with this information more in this thread. Thank you.

    Couldn't agree more.

I'm whiteknighting for ZOS for basically everything they screw up (be it the amount of bugs or the performance issue of their antiquated technical architecture)

But this kind of stuff made me stop recommending the game to anyone I know in RL. New players are so completely overwhelmed that they almost immediately loose interest. A good example are the reddit posts about this. Every week there is one new player posting there and asking wtf is wrong with the game.
It's completely immersion breaking. On every new toon i actually hate every major city. All those npcs screaming at you are *** annoying!

But it is an excellent example of screwing up story telling. (Don't get me wrong, the storys and quests are awesome and well thought, but every quest lines screaming for attention is inflating them over the top.)
