ESO Launcher Crashes on Update 9/04/2018

    I've been playing since closed beta, but just canceled my subscription that was due to re-up for 3 months on Sept. 30. I've already tried to trudge through the various user-created workarounds, and ultimately had to purchase a month of VPN access to completely reinstall (too large for most free VPN providers) - as the installer would not even begin to download after completely wiping the game folder following uninstallation.

    Zen & ISPs are pointing fingers at each other - however, I've not run into this issue with any of the 100s of GoG, Steam, Origin or direct download games that I own...even Uplay! I purchased the game directly after beta, so there isn't even a game service in the middle to blame at this point.

    I've been mildly irritated in the past by ability/skill changes (but do NOT miss Vet Ranks), etc - but quickly remembered that it is all part of a living MMO and resumed my thorough enjoyment of the game. The inability to play for 3 (PAID) weeks with no official fix or acknowledgement on the other hand has completely removed my desire to keep trying.

    Im having this same issue. launcher gets to like 3% before freezing, and ultimately crashing.

    Spent days trying to fix this. Deleted all addons, didn't work. Reinstalled ESO and even windows, didnt work.

    Downloaded a VPN (Windscribe) and was able to download the entire game. The 10BG Free Trial was enough to download the enitre game. Very easy to install Windscribe so recommend trying that if you are having issues. You literally just install it and turn it on and then download the game, its that easy.

    This is a huge problem, you can tell by the number of people viewing this post. Many are just giving up and not comign to the forums or don't know to. Some probably think its their computer and trying to reinstall everything.

    I also have Verizon FIOS, and while I didn't have this issue on my computer, it did happen on both of my wife's computers... and since we always play this game together, this is making it very difficult to justify continuing our two subscriptions. All three computers are always on the same network, so I'm not sure what the difference is... the only difference I've been able to find so far is that my wife's computers are both running Avira Antivirus.

    It definitely seems like the issue is somehow Verizon-related; the IP address that appears in the logs seems to be tied to some Verizon service:

    I've tried changing my DNS servers to both OpenDNS and Google's DNS, but neither of those has changed the behavior. (even after running ipconfig /flushdns)

    I also tried a workaround someone had posted (can't find the post now) of removing a couple of files from depot and forcing the launcher to do a repair, but that also ended up going back into the same crashing behavior.

    I tried the solution suggested by Dyngrin, and that seems to be working, though it is quite slow. A VPN might still be a better bet.

    Even though it's ISP-related, I really hope Bethesda/Zenimax can figure out a way to fix it soon, or they're going to end up losing a lot of subscribers. (Verizon FIOS and Spectrum aren't exactly uncommon ISPs, especially for gamers)

    For my part, I'm rather pissed that we've been paying our subscription for well over a year now, and when we really want to play because there's an event we want to participate in, we can't because the damn launcher is broken. Honestly, even if the core issue is ISP-related, the fact that the launcher is crashing when the log file reaches a certain size is a launcher bug and should be fixed immediately, since it prevents people from being able to play.

    And yes, I understand how difficult it is to prioritize issues like this that don't affect the whole userbase (I'm a software developer by trade, and have been developing video games as a hobby for most of my life) but crash issues generally need to be prioritized higher than other issues.

    Yup, i did the same thing for the same reasons. Haven't played ESO since Sept 4th and actually it's been a relief to be playing other games without having or wanting to return to this game to get my gaming fix. There is life after ESO ;)

    If your launcher freezes/stops during an update then press "Control", "Alt" and "Delete" then click on task manager. Under the processes tab look for any process with the name "ESO" then right click and select end task. You may have more than one process named "ESO" and you will need to end them all.

    I noticed when eso crashes the eso process continues running in the background. If it is running while trying to install an update then the update will not complete.

    If you don't feel like doing that then you can just restart your computer before doing an update.

    I've been dealing with this for the past week as well and, like others here, my ISP is also Verizon FiOS. However, I've no idea why this just started being an issue, though, and thanks to this *** I'm out all of the daily rewards for the end of this month.

    @ZOS_BillE could you PLEASE find a response to this issue. I really don't care if this is an ISP issue. I have emailed my ISP and they are willing to fix the issue if they are told what the issue actually is. The don't know what would be causing the problem. I'm see a lot of others on this thread, same issue, and no response from Zenimax/Bethesda.

    I'm still experiencing this problem, and the .txt with the logs is 40 megabytes. o_o

    Did we ever find out what was causing this, or should I send my logs somewhere?

    @lolzbuckets- Same here, and yes its odd that a developers log is 40M, @GinaBruno said to send them to her, doubt it will help.
    seems that they are blaming isp's for this round. and it could very well be the ISP blocking some new content. I did notice in one of my logs it said something about TOR perhaps this is why its blocked, but who knows.

    Its nearly been a month since they "reached out" to various isps. however, based on comments here its seems largely a fios issue?

    Same problems, only in the last week. I am in the EU zone. Spent the last weekend reinstalling VC++, deleting folder, harming the firewall, the antivirus, etc etc. Finally UNISTALL the whole game.

    No luck. nothing worked. Heavy screams... I thougth it was a problem of my pc/lan...

    This morning I have read the forum, found this thread, and :
    1. many thanks to ALL people fellow gamers writing here their experience/fail/fix --> it's not my pc issue
    2. really ashamed and annoyed of ZOS answers and hiding.... not fair, not clever, pity.
    3. CONFIRM that the Cell Hotspot fix actually WORKS.

    4. this evening I will try the no dev logs option and json settings.. then let you know

    @ZoS : my ISP is TIM. Italy. Still an ISP issue ??? Do you reached out for them too ??? .. MAYBE there is something related to DNS resolution, BUT the launcher is by far not able to handle this, only freeze and crash.. ZoS, THIS is ONLY up to you to solve, NOT the ISP :
    I was thinking last month to ReJoin the ESO plus .. obviously not. and never again, probably. Pity.

    To update everyone on the patcher issue, we can confirm this is an ISP issue. We’ve reached out to the internet providers who are blocking the associated files, and at this point, it’s up to them to resolve the problem. In the meantime, using a different network path could fix the problem and allow you to fully patch the game since this issue only affects certain files. In this case, you could try using VPN or using a different network or WiFi connection. You could also try uninstalling and reinstalling the game.

    We are currently looking into ways to prevent ISPs from doing this to our traffic in the future. Thanks for everyone’s patience, and if you require further assistance, we encourage you to reach out to our Support Team.

    SO WHEN ARE YOU, WHEN EXACTLY ARE YOU GOING TO FIX THIS?

    The update patch yet again is doing the same thing as September 4th and going forward. Go back to October and check when you did wrong since, maybe its just the way that youre naming the file that being blocked on the internet as trojan. I dont have time for this now do I have the ability to go thru another factory reset using other vpn things that allow actual trojans on my pc to burn the hard drive. I should bill you for that.

    I am experiencing this issue again, just like one week ago, the launcher stalls just after the download starts.

    This happens on 2 different accounts on 2 different computers.

    I tried downloading the depot file using the URL in the message I quoted, but even if I put that file in the "\depot\patchdata.depot" folder, when I start the launcher and I press the Update button, it still tries downloading 5,72 Mb and it immediately stalls, until the launcher automatically closes.

    I live in Italy and I am using Telecom as ISP.

    UPDATE:

    I noticed that my host.developer.log file is way too big to be a log file, it's 451 Mb, and I don't think this is normal.

    Last UPDATE:

    by further analyzing the host.developer.log file and the folders "\depot\patchdata.depot" and "\game\game_player" I could finally get the last remaining files I needed to patch the game and then the launcher finally applied the patch and is ready to Play.

    After all this, my host.developer.log file is back to a decent size, 61.2 Kb.

    I tried running the game and it worked; of course, after a long day of work, my free time to play the game for the day is now gone, I really hope this won't keep happening each and every patch.

    Been having the same issue since the 9/4 patch.... I open launcher and it freezes. End task and open again gets to 4%...freezes,. Open again and sometimes it finishes and all is well, and some days it freezes.

    Im on my 5th or 6th opening and closing today on 10/1's patch..... currently at 60%...

    ZoS...your launcher needs some serious help.

    On windows 7, non-steam version.... Mediacomm ISP

    Edit: only took 10 "end Task" - re-open launcher to get the 10/1 patch downloaded.... this is bad. And why the hell would ZoS only allow you to "repair" the launcher when you have a stuck download? My problem is the entire launcher freezes so I cant even click the "repair" function.

    Nothing on a fix or resolution since the beginning of Sept when you all washed your hands of this and blamed the ISPs. Been here since Closed Beta and sub since day 1 but if this continues I will have no choice but leave.

    Well, I tried a free VPN (Windscribe) and it didn't help at all with the issue... so back to running the ESO launcher in the background while we play Diablo 3.

    Still considering whether or not to ditch the plus subscription. If we can't play more than half of the month, then it probably won't be worth it any more.

    I had the issue today also. However, I had set my auto updates to Never. I updated, then it hung, but I had the option to run a repair. That seemed to work. At least better than last week's Goat Rope.

    I've had trouble with every patch since this issue first appeared. Eventually it patches after restarting the launcher over and over again. Last week it took 90 minutes of start, wait for crash, start, wait for crash, rinse, repeat. It's happening again tonight and email support isn't giving me any useful advice.

    Incident: 180924-003224

    Reporting in both places (forum and support ticket) so hopefully the dots get connected eventually.

    Well....I was able to patch the depot file but this game_player file is not going through. Don't see how it's different than every patch before I had to workaround. Now I'm at a loss :(

    Figured it out....game_player has 2 files 297to299 & 299to300. Here is the 2nd file:

    I'm in Hawaii as well, download stalling immediately. Never had an issue with the launcher freezing until this most recent patch.
