    Sept 24'th

    Maui Hawaii.
Updates still freeze and close down.

Once again using Betternet free VPN saved the day.

    Just putting it out there.

so when you replace those files, moving forward so i have to continue to replace those files every patch? @cbrking i been using a VPN since this started with wolf hunter and would love for everything to go back to normal. cause my launcher continuing to freeze for 65mb update is atrocious.

I'm so sad for what's happening to you guys, it happened to one of my friends and now he just gave up... I had this same problem yesterday but I was lucky to solve by immediately clicking the pause button, then "cancel" in the launcher options and finally repair. This worked for me but I know it's not for everyone. Now I only think that, after spending 81+ DAYS playtime and some money too in this game, it's just a cooldown to the patch that will kick me out of the game like all of you and I can't believe that after almost a month since the first post, this ridicolous thing is not being solved by ZoS. I hope they will hear us all and do something about this very soon.

I am also having issues with the Launcher freezing during install, I have reinstalled, and followed the instructions online. Still freezes at 13%. I was able to load the Patch on September 4, but not this time.

Yeah, every patch week for me since I started this thread. Just trying to help others as it's likely to take a while for zos to provide a workaound.

If you use VPN, most people report it works and you don't have to manually download and place files.

Did you remove the partial files? Also this week's files go to two different locations in your zos folder.
  • dark_zebra
I'm sorry, I have no idea where these files go, or where the partial is. Can you please tell me? I am not on steam
  • dark_zebra
    NVM, found it.
  • dark_zebra
So I just save the files to the depot folder and game folder? I don't have a folder named game_Player

They won't because this issue isn't happening to majority of the player base. Gina already stated it's an ISP issue and for us to call out ISP.

Just think it's funny when it wasn't a problem before WH.

I did call out my ISP. They say they have no idea what I'm talking about. Mediacom btw. They say they haven't heard about any issues. Has Zenimax/Bethesda sent anything to ISP's to let them know there is an issue? My ISP wants me to send them traceroutes and pings...I don't believe that will do anything since the issue seems to be a certain file type. If I start the download on my cell phone data, I can pause it then continue the download over my regular connection after a few MB have downloaded so it's not the actual connection. How would Zenimax/Bethesda expect an ISP to fix an issue they don't know anything about or what the issue might be. They have zero incentive, and anybody who has ever dealt with an ISP knows this, to put actual work into this kind of issue. I know this from work experience at the aforementioned ISP.

Yup man same here and same response. Spectrum here. Sucks that we were given the it's your ISP and haven't responded since. Like to them (ZOS) this issue is over. To us still suffering through it with no permanent fix it's screwed up they are leaving us in the dark with no options but VPNs or changing files.

I went to BBB, just to check about making a complaint there. No point. Zenimax already has an "F" rating and Bethesda a "D-" And really, what company has that poor a rating with the BBB? Seriously disappointing. I don't want to rant, or start one, but so very disappointed.

Just saying using a free VPN works every time. I just did it again right now without any problems. I never used a VPN before only installed it for Elder Scrolls patch updates. It was simple, and its hassle free each update.

I caved and tried a free VPN (which I shouldn't need in addition to the game) and now the launcher errors out and crashes when I run a repair. For sure THAT is not an ISP related issue.

Whether or not the original issue originated with ISP's, the poor support and absolute failure to fix the issue for this long is unacceptable. Quite a few people around me have been apprehensive of getting the next big ZOS/Bethesda online game--Fallout 76. Definitely passing that up if this is any indication of what to expect in terms of support.

Hello, I didn't have that folder as well, so I tried creating it and copying the file in it to see if it worked, and it did.

I can play the game now, but I fear this will happen again next patch and so on.

    Bye

    Hey guys!
I did the same and apparently now the launcher isn't stuck anymore. But now when I launch the game it crashes instantly. Could you help me please? @ZOS_GinaBruno

So, here we are 20 days later and the devs still haven't fixed the issue and we the consumers (yes I pay for the game) don't have a fix other than the manual fix the players themselves discovered. Wow! @ZOS_GinaBruno

And yes, still having the issue.

I know for a fact it's not ISP related. That's a cop out on the devs side. How do I know for a fact? If I go into my Depot folder and rename the depot.version file and the eso.mnf file, then launch the game, viola, it starts patching.

Of course this is a half a$$ed approach as it downloads ALL patches, 56GBs worth of data.

Inside the game folder there should be a folder labeled patchdata.game_player and that is where you will find the partial download. It doesn't show up until after you put the other file in the depot folder and advance the launcher some more. It ends up being a two step process: The first time the launcher stalls out there will be a partial download in a folder labeled patchdata.depot which is in the depot folder. Once you download and copy the file into that folder you start the launcher again. When it stalls again the next partial file should be in the folder labeled patchdata.game_player which is in the game folder and that is where you copy and put the second file once you download it. At least that is the way it worked for me.

I don't know if you can put both files in the respective folders the first time. I never tried it. I just wait for the partial download to show up. I have had to do this every patch since the 4th. I am grateful for everyone posting here. That is how I learned what to do!

  • rabbiddogb14_ESO
Ok, I've fixed the devs crap launcher issue. For me, the launcher would literally freeze as soon as it started. I mean the whole thing would freeze and I couldn't access the launcher options or anything. It would sit for about 5 minutes while it tried to patch, eventually state that the patching stalled, then after about another 5 minutes, it would shut itself down.

So what I did was go into my Depot folder, renamed the depot.version file and the eso.mnf file, started the launcher, at which time it would start to download all game files (approx. 56GBs of data). I paused the download, went into game options>settings, changed the auto update setting to "Never". Then closed the launcher. Went back and changed the two files names back to their original names and started the launcher.

Now the launcher didn't at least freeze up on me as it wasn't trying to patch and I was able to go to game options>repair and run a repair. After it ran through it checks, it actually then downloaded the latest patch and applied it without issue. All the game files in my Depot folder now show a date of 9/20 when previously they were showing 9/4. I can now play the game.

I think the devs owe me a months subscription for fixing their stuff.

Sadly it doesn't affect a LARGE amount of players, so I doubt its high up on ZOS's list. If it was say everyone on Steam couldn't log in, or a boat load of people couldn't log in they might do something, so unless they start losing alot of people's subs I doubt they will do anything, and eventually it'll either fix itself or everyone will find a workaround

Agreed. This is mind boggling bad customer service.

A workaround provided by a fellow player worked for me to get around the borked 09/04 patch but that is no longer working for the borked 09/24 patch. My patience is about exhausted.

I've been playing MMOs for decades going all the way back to Ultima Online. I've never had any issue updating any MMO unless the server was unavailable. This goes for any and all games I've ever played beyond just MMOS. I continue to update all my other current games fine.

This may be the first time I stop playing a game not by choice but because the company either doesn't know how to fix the problem or isn't making it a priority.
