HDR screenshots always look terrible on non-HDR screens. Take what you see in both images, back the saturation off about 30%, and that's what HDR TV owners really see when playing the game. I hope this makes sense.

Bottom line - HDR screenshots and videos when viewed on a non HDR screen can sometimes look unbelievably saturated.

My PC monitor is HDR which is where I'm currently viewing this. I don't play ESO on my PC - but even on this HDR monitor, that looks like the Teletubbies *** all over the screen.

Exactly, I have to explain this over and over.

I suspect when you take a video or screenshot (at least on the PS4Pro) in HDR mode, the output is not HDR. The console converts it, and does a simply terrible job.

I know that if I record ESO on my PS4, and play it back, it looks terribly saturated just like that first image, but when viewed live as it's happening, it looks nothing like that on the HDR TV.

Interesting - yeah the capture mode on PS4 is already lacking as it is - wouldn't surprise me that it can't captured HDR properly.

I might not like the way it looks - but far be it from me to say others shouldn't have it, I do think by principle they are right - they bought the TVs and/ console/ game with the premise of it being HDR, so the outrage is understandable.

Yeah exactly. The screenshots shown are nowhere near a true representation of the visual downgrade I have suffered.

I was really angry when I logged in after the update and immediately took to the forums for answers. I did not play for almost a week. A couple nights ago I decided to just play and try to see any value in the visual change made. Today I have been playing a few hours and have spent most of it in Coldharbour visually my least favorite zone. Well my opinion has completely changed. It is visually spectacular now. The lower saturation has brought the subtle colors to life.

The entire world of Tamriel has more detail and depth since the change. I am seeing detail in so many things the over saturated colors blocked. The whole world seems more dimensional. I had to reset my TV for the change I bumped up my color just a little bit. I changed my black settings because I had to lighten them for the old HDR because everything was so dark. I have a live color feature that was turned off. I turn that on which enhanced the colors just a bit. The old settings I used for the previous HDR needed to be change. After doing this the world was less saturated but with more depth, detail, and dimension. I was looking at my mounted head trophies the colors are subtle but really fantastic and I see more of them because they are not overpowered by the over saturation. I am not bending to the will of ZeniMax I am not caving. I get it now. I would still like to have a small boost of color or a way in the game to adjust it. However if our choices are to go back to the over saturated look or the new look after update without question I want to keep it this way now! I would be disappointed if it returned to the oversaturated color after giving the new look a chance and adjusting for it.

I want to make this clear I did not cave. I am also still mad at how ZeniMax handled this we deserved better. However I can not argue with the results. I simply readdressed my TV settings and gave the game a chance to allow me to see it fresh without the prejudice of my anger at the change. I stopped eating processed sugar a few years ago. After that nothing was sweet enough especially fruit. Over time fruit became sweeter and when I did eat things with a lot of sugar they were to sweet for me, know I don't like sugar and I use to have a sweet tooth. I think the same phenomenon has happened to me with the HDR color change. I still would like a small color boost but I do not want to go back to the over colored Tamriel I was defending a few days ago I was wrong and I do not like admitting I am wrong ever. I see much more subtle color in things because they are not wash away in over saturation. Find a way to satisfy the players with hopefully a controler that can do this but please don't revert back. I am telling you all I see it now and love it. It just took me a little time and a bit of hardware tweaking. I am sorry if that make people mad but I am just relaying my honest experience with the game now. I hate to say it because I was so against it but ZeniMazx was right about the change, at least on my TV.

It's great to finally see a response - and a very detailed one @ZOS_MattFiror.
Goes a very long way to mending cred in my book.
Just one small point about the HDR slider: I have a Sony KD55X9000e; $2.1k in AUD when I bought it almost a year ago. The HDR slider does nothing whatsoever - and mine is definitely not a cheap television.

    Pretty much my position.

Has anyone thought that no one heard these criticism because the people who thought so thought they might be yelled at by people who think HDR is perfect OR had simply not experienced the game without HDR yet?

Just because "You hadn't heard anyone complain before" doesn't mean the system was flawless. They either just didn't want to complain, didn't feel it was a big enough issue to be worth complaining about, or didn't know any better.

When I first upgraded to 4k (the very same day Pro launched) I had originally purchased an HDR TV, and within 24 hours I returned it for non-HDR because of how it made some of my games look. Never really felt the need to vocalize that fact until now, just here because it's the convo of the day.

I'm curious though how my TV would compare to an HDR TV with the HDR in the game disabled - they should look the same, no?

I mean to me this less saturated look is just... normal. So naturally when I see HDR screenshots I'm like holy that's saturated - but I imagine for HDR players its the opposite effect, coming off HDR probably feels burnt out - but to me this is just a normal colour range, whereas HDR, even on my PC monitor feels a little too in my face at times.

This was very unsettling to log in and discover. It looks like elder scrolls has been left out in the sun too long. I have trouble imagining anybody who prefers this "new way" and every affected player I've spoken with finds the new color saturation abysmal.

I'll be voting with my wallet on this issue and not purchasing another subscription, crown, or DLC until this has been resolved.

Until I read your text, I thought you were going to post how much better the game looked since Wolfhunter. Your top picture is not as good as the lower one.

I find the top one better, more fantasy like. If you want realism we have monsters, and magic and stuff that doesn't happen in real life. So I don't see the realism really should be an issue.

All I can say is before the update the game looked absolutely beautiful to me.

It looks so dull in comparison now that I don’t want to play it. And I love this game, that’s why I am so disappointed.

I find it hard to play knowing in my mind that I was playing a superior looking version days ago.

I don't know if they 'should' or not....but they don't. The game looked just fine on my non-HDR TV. But going to a 4k HDR television, then losing HDR in the game made it look like crap.

I know I can go into my television's settings and disable HDR globally to make it look better, but honestly that's a workaround and hassle I don't find acceptable as a paying customer. I'm not going to toggle HDR back and forth on the TV every time I change games.

Anyway, I've given my opinion on the subject. Not sure I have anything else to say.

Didn't quote your whole post, but I agree with a lot of it. The issue now as I see it is that you see this gorgeous load screen of Summerset, then you're loaded into the zone and you're like "Where is that color here?"

ZOS over-corrected and the game zones don't have the same color levels as the load screens (Or other games, for that matter) and that's what I want to see corrected. Give us a slider, or boost the colors back up a little. Some zones look better than others, but overall this change was too much. Ease it back a bit.

Here is my take on this. I was one of the really mad customers. I love this game and admit I have invested a couple hundred bucks into the game because I love player housing. In RL I am an artist and work with color both digitally and traditionally I am know for this. When I saw all my hard work on my housing look so bad I was really disappointed. I created my houses with color and light and mixed them to give an overall painting like quality to my house which I am proud of. This change has ruined all that.

However with that said. I decided to tweak my 4k HDR TV setting a little bit and try to stomach the dull world of Tamriel that was dropped upon us HDR players after the last patch. A few glasses of wine help me do that. What I noticed was a more realistic look to Tamriel. There is a beautiful subtle color to it that I slowly started to appreciate. I believe this is the intended look the developers wanted in their art direction. Based on other Elder Scrolls game especially Skyrim there is a gritty more desaturated look and ZeniMax was trying to keep the look of ESO in that style. What I am seeing now is what the developers intended. However it is not the Tamriel I started with.

I would not want to go back to the over saturated world I was accustom to playing in. But I am also not satisfied with what ZeniMax has done with the HDR and color after last update. That is the conundrum, I see their point but miss what I am use to, especially when it comes to my player houses. I have decided not to quit YET and see how this plays out. That is a big compromise for me because I was one of the angriest players after this change. I will not be buying anymore crowns until I see a fair solution offered by ZeniMax but I will continue to subscribe and play for now.

So what is my solution? First an adjustable HDR slider that works that does not only effect high dynamic range but also color saturation these are two different things HDR is not about color saturation. I am not sure if that is possible but ZeniMaz has genius programmers and maybe they can figure this out. If that is not possible I would like to see the color saturation for HDR users upped by about 30% only. I think that brings back a richness to color that us 4K HDR users are familiar with but not overriding the art style that Zenimax is trying to capture. It was wrong for ZeniMax to just drop this on us but I am seeing a bit more of what their artistic intent was and I get it. So ZeniMax be more transparent and communicate better about this issue. You fundamentally change our experience and we have a right to be mad and want answers. So with caution I am not taking my business elsewhere for now but this needs to be addressed one way or another soon, we as your customers deserve this. Consider about a 30% color boost.

Here is an example of my work if you are interested you can see why color is important to me.

Yes, I do. Like I said, I don't play ESO on console because I tried it and hated everything about it, but for example of I ran into a similar issue playing...idk, Bloodborne just as an example? I'd happily fix it every time.

You say ALL OF THIS, yet you’re simply making excuses. It’s as simple as turning hdr on to off. That’s all you’re seeing

No you do not understand what HDR really does it is not about color as a main effect it is about value. I have also had a change of opinion I have come to really like the change. But is hardly a matter of just turning it on or off. HDR can display a wider range from black to white. HDR improves the contrast between the darker and brighter parts of a scene, so you can see more details in the very darkest and brightest areas of the picture. So what happened with the update was they adjusted the color saturation that happened when they implemented the HDR. But people are confused and are calling this color change HDR when in fact it isn't. Now the color saturation is turned down more to the level of the none HDR game world. There is still a big difference in the two looks. HDR is much more detail and a bigger range of value (not color) So it is not a matter of just turning it off.

It baffles me how people can think that it looks better post update. It looks terrible and dull.

It never looked cartoonish, and I had not heard that criticism mentioned previously?

Basically the colours popped pre update, but not It’s just dull now.

There are a lot of threads on the forum plus reddit complaining about the over saturation pre patch:

    For example https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/370085/hdr-color-looks-odd#Comment_4475356

    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/305987/ps4-hdr-update-far-too-dark#Comment_3561273

    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/399263/is-contrast-in-eso-for-4k-tvs-an-issue-for-anyone

And that’s just a small selection.

What about all the threads where people were complaining about the HDR saturation before it was changed though? OH yeah there aren't any.

??? Did you read any of the links I posted, the very first one complains about over saturation in HDR pre patch...

Or another one https://www.reddit.com/r/elderscrollsonline/comments/7vk3ov/xb1x_4k_color_settings/ there are literally tons of threads pre patch complaining about over saturation on consoles HDR. It comes down to personal preference. I for one would much prefer a realistic look with a slight increase in colour post patch but definitely not a revert to pre patch

I totally agree with you on this. Now that I gave it time and really allowed my self to adjust to the big change. A slight color enhancement would be nice but not a return to the oversaturated look.

Easily fixed with color setting on the TV, except that there's still plenty of color in maps, loadscreens, HUD etc. Is it that hard to match the game world to the load screen previews? Even the Rift is dull now - all those beautiful fall colors in the trees have gone. Here's hoping ZOS brings us a slider, or a noticeable color bump (Heck, I think even the non HDR game could benefit from juicing up just a smidge on the colors too)

I hope they act quickly. And yes, I'm in agreement that the over-saturation wasn't ideal. Neither is this. Somewhere in the middle would be cool.
