Is there “actually” cheating in PvP?

I play on PS4, so I imagine if there WERE cheating, it’d be more prevalent on PC. Also, I’ve never witnessed anything I’d consider “cheating.” Some players are just exceptionally good at PvP.

But I’ve been playing I’m Cyrodil quite a bit lately, and still hear the same “oh that guy’s cheating!” These aren’t even said in jest, but legitimate absolute beliefs that the other player is cheating (which is of course why they died).

So...is this actually real? Do people actually have ways to cheat in the game?

Note: I’m not including exploits.

So have you actually experienced this?

Thats the thing about cheating. How would you even see it if it was stat boosting? If it wasnt for those players who openly cheated with spamming ultimates or flying above the walls, we wouldnt even know how easy it was to use Cheat Engine.

Has there been an update on cheating security ever since the Cheat Engine incident?

I dont think there is for years now.

A lot of addons should be removed.
Combat interface should only be buff timers and damage/heal scrolls NOTHING ELSE.

There is a distinction between exploiters and hackers, and I consider both to be subcategories of “cheaters”.

Exploiters take advantage of bugs or glitches in the game, but do not alter any code or modify any data.

Hackers, on the other hand, hack their data transmission or use other third party programs to get an edge.

I’ve never seen any real hacking... not in at least two years.

I still see a few exploiters here and there. Things like a fire rune in a battleground spawn for the instant kill by environmental dmg, spamming draining shot to CC lock somebody, the IC exp glitch, etc.

I don’t think we’ll ever get rid of exploiters. But I’m glad that we don’t have to deal with hackers.

Last weekend I fought a Sorc who could and did for the better part of 4 minutes would bash me once then stealth, then bash me again and stealth and would just keep doing this over and over. I was running mage light and using detect pots that would not reveal him. He wasn't trying to kill me he was just showing off what he was doing.

I have not personally witnessed with my own eyes actual cheating. I hear other people talking about it, and have been just on the other side of a wall from said cheating. But unless I witness it myself, not going to just assume some stranger is telling the truth. Did watch a couple people exploit themselves up onto a keep wall multiple times today. I was just like, how dare you, and we killed them dead. I'm sure there are a few people out there doing actual cheating, if I see it myself then I will know that person sucks, but I'm not going to take someone else's word for it.

Cheating in pvp? Idk. Doubtful. In PVE? Oh yeah. For sure lol. Maw skin snipe and sorc glitch in maw to loot chests, used to be a glitch in SO where you could kill the last boss, log out, then log back in and kill the boss again. That's just a few of many!

Yes there is ... I'm seeing an influx of not only snipe gank builds but rapid fire modded controllers added to that is just a pain

Yes. Probably more so on PC.

How often? Really hard to say. This is because of how ESO works. Someone who is smart about cheating will never get caught. Like say, they usually don't but when its a close fight suddenly they just win and you wonder how they did it. That could be a really skillful move or they just cheated. You will never know and neither will ESO. Or they go into keeps with a cheat but hey, maybe they just happened to sneak in and hide when the walls were down (few other ways that are exploits but ESO won't ban anyone over). You can't know so that is that.

Only by seeing really blatant cheating will anyone get reported and maybe banned. Some are known cheaters because people have fought them enough to know what they are doing is an exploit/cheat.

As for PvE it probably happens more often than in PvP since no one is around to report them. ESO is clearly not on top of this and their system code makes for many easy hacks.

It does not appear to be 'rampant' in PvP, luckily. More the occasional annoyance. So it really isn't worth worrying about, you'll have many more fights against typical players. Also is not worth reporting unless really obvious. If someone is doing something odd just ignore em and go somewhere else to PvP.

Yep, and the obvious conclusion I have come to is some of these ppl are using mouse and keyboard on console.

I play both ps4 and pc and I could beat my ps4 self every time without fail with my pc self. Also a lot of macros are showing up on console as of last patch or two. Same reason/product is why...

But wherever there are human beings in competition, somebody's going to go there. It's a little pathetic but really predictable.

For the longest time some certain players were using ‘private addons’ that did the same thing. Miat just handed the same tools to everyone.

Was it cheating? Not really, but it was certainly an unfair advantage.

i dont play pc but i remember a metor glitch or hack where they casted it constantly. saw a video of it. nasty buisness but it was rather beautiful to watch.

That is a very good point. Russia’s absence from this past olympics highlights on how grand a “cheat” people are willing to use to win.

@BrockofPercival you’ve hit I think on the absolute crux of it all. Outside of actually seeing boosted stats or use of an outside program, there doesn’t seem like any reliable way to know for certain whether someone is cheating. Like calling someone a liar in real life, I would need to see proof or have beyond all reasonable doubt before I’d ever call someone on it. When so many people shout “hack,” I’m sure the players who are killing them are all the more delighted. Truly, what greater win than being so good that people actually think you must be cheating?

Exploits I’m very hard pressed to side with one way or another. I think if it completely negates the difficulty of something, it should be a hard ban. If it simply negates time, then I’m on the fence.

Take the Lodor’s Crown exploit from Mazz. It allows you to bypass 70% of the dungeon, but it doesn’t actually negate the difficulty of the endeavor, just time. (I’ve heard this has been fixed, but to use as an example).

But why isn’t time weighed the same as difficulty?

Because a great amount of this game involves farming. It’s the very way it’s designed. What this does to players is add a time-sink in the game. To progress, you have to devote many hours to acquiring the gear to face the more difficult hurdles in the game. But by and large, “grinding”for gear is a cheap money-making tactic that equates to the most time spent per the least amount of enjoyment. Difficulty will always be there, but time is the most precious commodity in our lives.

Time spent in challenging content is rewarding, so you feel like your time was well spent. Time spent just draining hour after hour to acquire a last piece of gear or trait is significantly less rewarding. It’s a game for enjoyment, so maximum enjoyment for your precious time should be (I believe) the most important aspect of the game.

How would you know that ppl are using mouse/keyboard and by extension, according to you, even macros? I don’t buy it tbh. Also macros would fail you in lag and not support you nearly as much as true muscle memory would during fast-paced combat soooo.... that sounds like a disadvantage to me.

Also mouse/keyboard doesn’t benefit you much at all over a controller in this game. In FPS games sure, but never in ESO. I know many PC players purposely hook up controllers to play. It’s all preference. These sort of accusations kinda just sound to me like things ppl scream when they get 1vXed

This is the real problem right here. Most of the things that people call a cheat fall into one of three categories: Bug, Exploit of the bug, or Inexperience on the part of the person witnessing something to realize it's legitimate. It's possible there are actual cheaters in game, but until any hard evidence comes out I'm going with bug or exploit.

that's just false, the point of using that or even repeatedly using that is to keep people "away" from them because they are ranged players. does not mean what your saying it is being used for.

i pretty much take it for granted that anyone whom is able to beat me in a 1v1 is either cheating, exploiting, or, in some unholy alliance with molag bal...

it's frightening the amount of that kind of nefarious type behavior that is going on...

Depends what your definition is. Cheating has many forms. On PC id say its rife as I would count many add-ins as cheating, and true hacking is easier I.e. Code changes

But on console we have:

Player behaviour i.e. Alliance switching to boost your own AP and hand Emp around your guild is Cheating, yet many dont think so.

Using exploits is cheating and common - lethal arrow / snipe has something funky going on, trials glitches, DK wall jumping

I'd like to think we dont have many people.using cracked consoles and CE / controller mods but I'm sure some.cheeky so and sos do.

I'd say console is safer from actual hacking cheats which I think you referring to. People just need to get gud when they get beat

I have no doubt cheating happens and I know there are groups who discuss bugs and exploits with the point of abusing them before they're discovered/fixed.

However I don't think it's as rampant as everyone makes out sometimes. The way you read these forums is that everyone is running CE and no one plays fair, but I think most of the players just log in and game without any care to such things.

We also have the sad situation where everything which can't be instantly explained is deemed cheating and muddies the water with false information and reports.

There cheating we will never be able to prove because people no longer blantely cheat.You can boost your stats by a small amount to give you that edge you need to win a fight.If your already good at the game and know how to play those extra little boost will give you that advantage you need to win.A little more stam recovery and magic recovery is a huge difference in a fight.

I assume that 99% of perceived cheating is just the other players lack of understanding of game mechanics, latency, computer issues, or just L2P.

Sadly there are tons of broken skills&sets in the game,

And by broken I don't mean ''hurr durr seventh legion broken''

I mean broken in a fundemental level,

Like draining shot not giving CC immunity, that kind of broken.

People are exploiting these sets/skills as much as they can.

As for cheating I encountered a few teleporting players, Could be my ping, but I never saw those players again, so possibly it might be some cheaters who got banned. I really don't know. I never cheated ever in any video game.

Many of the players that over exaggerate about prolific cheating here, are the kinds of players that rage whisper you in-game when they lose.

Exploiting or abusing bugs will always happen, but people who resort to falsely accusing others of cheating/macroing/hacking tend to play poorly.

fair point, but also saying cheats never existed in this game, can be only the words of a cheater, or a new player, as this game definitely survived the cheatopia before.
