Because mounts can be upgraded in game with gold, you can not buy an additional character slot with gold. Its not quite the same thing.

The difference is that mount training can be bought for gold. Granted, it takes a lot longer but the option is there.

Needs to be a gold option for outfit slots. Make it expensive if need be, but at least there'd be an alternative to crowns.

As a recent new recruit, 100 hours, an eso plus sub, and generally new to the mmo world i have to admit I'm slightly appalled at this decision. It stinks of monetizing people's loot, almost a bit lootboxy. Quite frankly I have about 5 months on my sub left, but as it stands i will have to seriously check where I stand closer to the time my sub expires. As a 39 year old professional I'm not short on cash, but I'm no fool, and I don't appreciate being taken for one.

Hadn't even noticed that yet. So now it's 2000 crowns for 10 riding lessons? The Crown Store listing on their website is still 1000, but that could just be outdated (mind you, 1,000 Crowns for a 10% increase to mount speed or what have you was already overpriced).

well, I think that I have to rethink my ESO+ membership,
the game sucks, the update turns out to be a downgrade once again
and I found out that I have a membership at a streaming platform where I can watch movies etc.
Had a nice evening so far, without lags, kicks, bugs and what else

you can try it too, there is life outside ESO!

Because crowns are an additional way to upgrade mounts, rather than the only way. if you'd rather pay 250g each day for 10 days, you're welcome to do that. Instead of allowing additional slots to be acquired in game by gold or something else, they are crown exclusive. And at 1500 crowns per slot, per character, that's way, way, way too steep.

You also get 10 lessons for 1000 crowns so, 100 crowns per lesson. If you got an account wide slot (for all current/future characters) for 1500 crowns, that would end up being about the same: 100 crowns per character. Much easier to stomach. A lot for those who only have ONE character so what would be most acceptable, imo, would be to offer a character only slot for one price as well as an account wide price for a higher buy in (but the more characters you have, the more you'd end up saving).

250 for one character slot <- good for people with only one or two characters
1500 for account wide upgrade <- good for people who play and customize multiple characters

While it's true that 1500 crowns for one unique additionnal slot on one unique character is a bit over the top, and would justify this outrage, I'll tell you why those protests are never, ever going to work ...
      • 1500 crowns for a costume slot --> half the community threaten to quit, no one does.
      • Skill [x] does 1 less damage --> half the community threaten to quit, no one does.
      • Skill [x] does 1 more damage --> half the community threaten to quit, no one does.

      • and the list could stretch like this, until the heat death of the universe..

Too much outrage kills the outrage, people .. there is no way the community will ever be taken seriously, since a good ninety percent of complains are ridiculous at best.

Now, keep in mind that, while I don't mind a game having a cash shop for cosmetic changes, 1500 for this slot is indeed way too much.

I dont get it... you ask for fluff, you get fluff, and complain that it costs money. As I said earlier... If it were something you had to have to play the game, I would be on your side faster than a mongoose on a cobra. But it's fluff that doesnt change your ability to do everything in the game that is required to do the best at the game that you can. So your arguments about the cost is, to me, the same as a kid crying that he got dirty after begging to go outside for hours. Why ZOS continues to do things for people that continuously complain about it is beyond me.

I would REALLY prefer they just fixed things. All of this extra fluff you keep asking for is causing bugs in the game that are making it a chore to play. Like Crashing on logout or quit. Like graphic shredding. Like getting hammered through a wall. Like incredibly annoying stuck spots. And I could go on and on. Whining about fluff when there is so much to fix is (insert superlative here).

Well, there is a quite easy fix for most of the problems - just make the whole game PvE and get rid of the PvP stuff - how about that, would you be happy with this fix?- For some people - if not most of them - TES/ESO is not about competitive combat, but about the looks and feel of the world created by the Elderscrolls lore, an exploration adventure, not a battlefield.

There are dummies out there that will pay even if its 3000 crowns, reason why ZOS keeps pricing stuff this high. Do you really think they would bother pricing stuff like this if they didnt see a good cashflow coming in. Blame the dummies. This should had stopped with the Merchant and Banker, but nearly everyone I see has one, meaning no matter how high, people where still going to get it and ZOS would laugh its way to the bank. Oh well. Back to costumes and those really cheap disguises.

I did the math for you. 120,000 crowns.

I don't know how many total outfit slots there are, I thought I read 8 that you can buy. That would cost 180,000 crowns to max out a full account of characters.

It's ten. 10 slots / character max. At that price, I even wonder why they bothered setting a max limit...

I edited my original post, it's 225,000 crowns or $1500.

Yeah, and they have a rocky history of actually listening to their community. Sometimes it seems like they're getting better about it, but then, well, this happens. But there is something that will work.

It's readily apparent to me at this point that profit - specifically short-term profit - is what motivates ZOS' decisions above anything else. Making a good game or having a good community are important to them too, sure, but all subservient to short-term profit. Which seems very short-sighted to me from a business perspective, and disappointing given that there are MMOs out there that prioritize their communities over short-term profit, but whatever.

So, what WILL work is if nobody buys these things. They may not listen to their community, because money apparently comes first, but I suspect they'll drop the price if nobody buys them. And I'm REALLY hoping that these are ridiculously expensive enough (because good god they are) that, for once, people will actually avoid buying them.

On the other hand, there are a whole lot of people out there who leap at the opportunity to buy $40 reskinned elk mounts, so my hope is admittedly limited.

@OrdoHermetica definitely agree that listening is not their strong suit. Not sure how much this system was discussed on the PTS, including the gold cost, dye cost, etc, etc. And, as far as I can tell, it went live pretty much exactly as was originally released on the PTS, save for the hide helmet collectible bug being fixed.

There was a lot of debate about this on PTS. Among the players, that is. While ZOS interacted with us on several other issues, they clammed up on this one and even refrained from commenting in a single one of the many posts about the costs of both gold and crowns.

Clearly the devs can't even defend this stupid decision, that came directly from the marketing and financial department.

Money talks. Voicing outrage on the forums is one thing, but I know tons of people who would love to purchase those outfit slots and are refusing to because of the ridiculous price. ZOS is losing money with this decision, and if there's one thing that could actually change their minds it's the prospect of making more money.

I'm not threatening to leave the game over this. I'm threatening to close off my wallet to ZOS because of this.

You have to pay (crowns or gold, in no small amounts) to modify the outfit of any given slot. So yes, it means every time you want to look different, you have to pay. Or use costumes. You have to go to the shop... You can only swap outfits for free if you have more than one slot.

Pricing was not discussed on PTS since we had no idea of pricing. On PTS not only do you get infinite "fake crowns", but everything in the PTS crown store costs 1 crown.

TBH a 1 000 crown for horse bonus is also a lot to pay ! Only reason we pay for it, is ... CYRODIL TRAVELING TIME IS AWFUL ! and I mean it

Personally, if horses were cheaper from time to time I might had spend a little bit more in it but as for now... it's something I've only done once when I was starting the game. Now, as for the outfit system it is the same issue. Their marketing guy's mind is a sick old *** who has a thing for people with limited spending practice and a touch of gambling issue on the side.

It's a bit harsh but to be fair I do think it is honest. The industry is currently struggling with the monetization of their product and instead of trying to be the people champion with well-though design they have gain a short term vision who's not going to help sell product and who's actually going to push people away from them as well.

Hating the practice is usually a good reason to never buy anything ! :)

Yes. Yes they would. Their marketing and sales strategy is old school and one that a lot of businesses are moving away from, because it's not sustainable in the long run. Turns out cynicism and appealing to people's base impulses loses its effectiveness over time.

They seem to be sticking to their guns, however, despite some of the earliest critical reviews from gaming and industry publications citing high cost as a serious drawback. Clearly they have data that shows that their system is working for them, at least for now - and "for now" seems to be the time frame that matters to them, not what these practices will very likely do to their base down the road.
