Surely all that's needed to make up for the loss is, perhaps a new support class with unique group sustain abilities..
Could maybe use cold and nature based abilities and perhaps call it a 'warden'.?

I'm getting tired of having to completely rebuild my character several times a year just because they can't figure out how to balance the game and decide to roll out some crazy change like this.

But if they are going this way, then they should take a look at un-nerfing many of the regen sets like black rose and desert rose that felt OP because they could be combined with this. (FYI - want to nerf something like BR - take away the damage buff or reduce it, it's not OP just b/c someone is super tanky, it's OP b/c someone can be super tanky and do decent damage). Plus there have been other changes made like no regen of stam while blocking to deal with OP regen that now will feel like a double nerf to those builds.

Nothing makes me want to give up the game more than having to rebuild a bunch of characters every time there is a major patch. I hate feeling like that about a game I like.

They did not raise the level cap. They needed to do something to get people regrinding gear to pad out the length of morrowind.

First you nerf costs by giving an +8% increased cost to everything with DB, then you changed to formula slightly I believe? But it was a small nerf to recovery again, and if this happens sustain will be impossible

Magicka DK for example, there skills cost an arm and a leg, without CP for sustain I don't know how the game will handle it

What people seem to forget is that they nerfed the heavy attack passive in armor by 25%. Resulting in 25% less resources. This was substantial. Combined with these CP changes that's rough.

All skill costs went up in the past. Without these being addressed all builds will be required to go sustain over damage and raw healing power

The longer I play this game the weaker my characters get and the content gets continually nerfed. ZOS really does like to do things differently.

So basically the only time that you have almost unlimited resources is when you run in a coordinated group
Is that really a bad thing, though?

I played this game at launch, and one of the play elements I liked was the idea of soft caps, where there was a logical point past which maximizing a stat became a conscious decision to push your character into a "pure" build at the expense of potentially useful hybridization. (Kinda like the "glass cannon" versus "balanced attack" approach.)

I came back recently, and I'm kind of appalled at what the game has become. It annoys the hell out of me that any racial choice other than Dunmer or Altmer for Magicka builds means making a character that will never, ever be as strong as those two. It annoys me that gear and CP have replaced the need to make most build choices, and now everyone just designs every single class exactly the same way: "one resource management skill on the back bar, and make up the rest from CP and gear."

I'd much prefer a game where you need to make a choice between sustained and spike DPS. Where there's value in hybridization. And, ideally, end-game dungeons that are challenging because fights require players be clever or creative - NOT just DPS races against enrage timers.

(Timers are, in my opinion, the absolute laziest game design choice ever invented, and are universally the result of trying to cover up poor game design decisions.)

But many people seem to do not agree with you, this game at launch was considered ***, and now it's a pretty acclaimed mmorpg, the reason? people like it more this way.

I personally think that soft cap don't make much sense, why should you be penalized for specing more into something?
It doesn't make sense. You wanna play a crit build? Do it. you wanna play a resource build? do it. an so on. i actually think that soft caps wouldn't solve anything, the meta will just shift to something else, and everyone will be running 2 or 3 sets because they perform better.

Their changes seem reasonable to me
Once you hit CP cap you can pretty much build for damage and not have to make any sacrifices to have full sustain.

However the biggest problem with the CP structure is that all the damage traits are on the blue tree and the sustain are on the green tree. There is no decision making here apart from magicka or stamina.

Blue tree should have all the magi damage AND sustain options, green should have all the stamina options. This would also allow people to make hybrid builds. This would also allow people to build for sets like red mountain properly.

This is a good suggestion. Make magic choose between damage and sustain in their own corresponding damage type or archetype.

Make stamina choose between damage or sustain in their own archetype.

If this goes live, I want a riot xD.

Seriously This a terrible terrible change and screws everyone over. PvE or PvP. Doing anything at all in the game after this will only be completed by <1% if that happens. Now tell me what is the point of a game where only a handful of people would ever complete a majority of content?

That hyperbole may seem extreme, and perhaps it is, But if this change goes live without giving players a resource alternative than what we have, then this game is screwed. I feel even worse for PvPers. Because on top of this Poison's will now be the "I WIN" button no skill losers.

I'm not saying they would add softcaps back in but ZOS has no problem destroying 50+ sets with one nerf as shown by the recent removal of crits from ALL proc sets, even the ones that were average to begin with, sweeping anything but the best away.

This is really the thing I never understood about the champion system. It doesn't make you chose between damage, sustain, defense, etc. It specifically gives you access to everything by rotating between warrior/mage/thief points.
No, it makes you chose between points within those constellations, which effectively means you chose between ... magicka recovery and stamina recovery, magic damage and physical damage, light armor and medium armor.
Which is no damn choice at all, because there already are magicka and stamina builds. The only thing accomplished by this is making hybrids impossible.

Soft capped health, magicka, spell damage, spell resistance and magicka recovery. Everyone had these stats because they were so easy to obtain. That isn't diverse.

Yeah. I'm not sure what people who advocate for soft caps envision, but the way it was, everybody had essentially the same stats.

It's diverse because generally speaking since stat ceilings didn't matter generally speaking you had alot more freedom with actual rotation and gear. Yes there was a 'proper' way to do it but you could also do it reletively well with another setup, allowing for personalization.

    Yup, that's literally the idea.

The idea is to either spread your points broadly so you have some sustain and some damage, or put all your points into damage and try and deal with sustain in a different manner (heavy attack weaves? sustain jewellery? sustain set bonuses?) or grab all those sustain points and try and make up the damage with sets / enchants, or try and walk the middle road.
It forces you to balance your priorities and tweak your build.

You could throw all your sustain in the bin and go full hybrid, using magi and stam regens by using a balance of both skills. Stam sorcs could go all stam dps all magi regen and work dark deal into their rotation.

Right now we have ALL the damage and ALL the sustain, as long as you don't try and do any sort of hybrid build.

I play a stam templar, so I don't have the incombat sustain nightblades and sorcs have. So I just slot out caltrops for blade cloak for last boss vma since that fight can be heavy on sustain if things don't work out favorably.

softcaps are the worst thing that could happen to ESO right now. Literally kills build and class diversity.
You mean like how soft caps allowed hybrid builds and other novel build styles without completely gimping you for not just building in the direction of min maxing stat/dmg/crit/pen?

Yeah, soft caps totally kill diversity
lmao, if you add soft caps in the game right now you are basically killing off about 40 or so sets and will pretty much shift all magicka and stamina builds to focus on one set to be the saving grace, racials will be useless too. But at least we get play it your way hybrid builds, right?

Yeah, soft caps totally kill diversity.
You act as if removing the soft caps didn't make previously viable sets unviable either. I don't see why I should be concerned which precious set isn't going to be BIS when we are discussing the issue of game balance and play style diversity. I guess you couldn't give a rats ass about hybrid builds being viable, but your personal preference does not magically make being shoehorned into fewer play styles a good thing.

Yeah, soft caps totally kill diversity

This is what soft caps look like:

    VAeQwYN.jpg

Soft capped health, magicka, spell damage, spell resistance and magicka recovery. Everyone had these stats because they were so easy to obtain. That isn't diverse.
You guys are being overly simplistic with your argument. Similarity in character sheet stats =/= no diversity in builds. The soft caps being what they were meant that many of what would today be considered unoptimal sets were in fact viable because you would still reach the soft caps. Soft caps are not hard caps. Once you were soft capped in the key areas you could either push further against the diminishing returns or spec some into your utility stats (stam/stam regen for mag builds, ect).

Removing soft caps has simply pushed "build variety" in the direction of building to extremes:
    • Max primary stat + dmg + crit on dps builds
    • Max health trollplars
    • Max regen rolly pollies
    • Max mitigation troll tanks
Then proc sets on top of this simply exacerbates the whole issue of balance.

Let's take a look and see the different playstyles of mag sorc that were viable in competitive pvp up through 1.5:
Removing soft caps + adding the CP system and nerf after nerf after nerf that have been slapped on as bandaid fixes for that mess have succeeded in pushing us to just having destro & dual wield playstyles left, with dual wield losing out more and more just about every update (poisons, 8% dmg boost on destro, incoming siphoning CP, ect).

Please, go ahead and explain to me how I have more options in my playstyle with the current system?
