Stop saying necro-potence

I believe the 2 things most people get wrong are:

Aleswell - pronounced either Ale's-well OR Al-is-well(sounds closer to Alice than Ales)

Dawnbreaker of Smiting - pronounced either smite-ing or smith-ing

I say the former, I hear many people pronounce it the latter.

I believe it's a English second language thing.

"Income" like money is pronounced "in-kah-m" in London, where I am from. I am not aware of other pronunciations of "income" but I am sure they exist. IN-kahm, with the emphasis on the first syllable.

"Incompetence" is in-COM-po-tense. "in" like going in, "com" as in "computer", "po" like the Teletubby or Edgar Allan Poe, "tense" like verbs. I watched the video that @exeeter702 linked, and it's weird. In-KAHM-po-tense? No one here would pronounce it like that. I assume that the strange machine pronunciation has been programmed by an American.

Similarly, it's neh-CRO-po-lis. "Neh" as in "negate", "cro" like the beginning of "crop", "po" as the Teletubby again, and "lis" like "listen". And also me-TRO-po-lis. Interesting fact: the railway line I used as a teenager was originally opened as the London Necropolis Railway, to carry corpses and mourners between London and Brookwood Cemetery.

Where is this "CRAW" coming from? It must be a regional thing.

Since necropotence is a fantasy word I don't see how either can be incorrect until someone says so. It's like Daedra (DEE-dra/DAY-dra), both are used in TES4, so both are correct.

The other thing to think about is what does it mean? If it is etymologically constructed from necromantic potency, there is a case for that being the pronunciation too.

You know, with actual real words, you can look up their proper pronunciations.

    http://www.dictionary.com/

    Malachite: mal-uh-kahyt
    Necropolis: nuh-krop-uh-lis
    Orichalcum: awr-i-kal-kuh m

Using American English phonics, necropotence would be nuh-krop-uh-tence.

This whole thread is about where to place emphasis on a syllable in a word? Have we really nothing more pressing to complain about?

Aluminium- How someone from NA says it. Ahh-lou-me-num. We skip the second "i" in the word cause it tongue ties us.
Al-lou-min-ne-um is how someone from Australia or England usually says it. We can all agree if your from the U.S. it sounds pretty funny. Same word, difference in pronunciation. Nuff said.

Po-tae-toe, Po-tah-toe. It's doesn't matter. It's a thing that grows in the ground and ya eat it. Who cares! rofl

I'll leave my two-cent comparison in here...

I viewed it as neck-ROW-po-tense based of the pronunciation of the word "***."

Long "O" in the latter, so I say a long "O" in the former.

    That is all.
