Cyrodiil Performance Test and Double AP Event

    Hey gang!

As you saw in Matt’s 2017 roadmap, we are making Cyrodiil performance evaluation and fixing a priority this year. We want to make sure that Cyrodiil is a great PvP experience for everyone. Over the last year, we’ve made some good strides towards refining server performance across all campaigns, and we will continue down that path.

When looking into Cyrodiil issues, we definitely see (both in-game and through monitoring) situations where client and server performance degrade significantly when under high load. The small incremental changes we’ve made over the last year have helped, but they alone are not enough. So, we’re going to change our strategy a bit – which is the point of this post.

Simply put, Azura’s Star (the non-Champion Point campaign) runs much better, more efficiently, and is overall a much better PvP experience than the standard campaigns such as Trueflame or Haderus. Now that we’ve had a significant population density in Azura’s Star, we strongly suspect what has been theorized for a long time: Champion Rank passives and abilities are causing too much server load, especially in situations like Keep battles where there are tons of players in one place.

Because of this, we are going to run a series of PvP performance tests, and because it is impossible to simulate PvP load on our internal test servers (or on PTS), we will do this on all live servers on the dates of February 27 – March 6. This is not something we take lightly, and it is important that we evaluate performance when the server is under real-world load situations.

Our first test will be set up as follows:
    • For a period of one week, all Champion Points will be disabled on all Campaigns on all platforms and megaservers
    • During this time, AP gains in all Campaigns will be doubled, both to compensate for lack of CP and also to incentivize players to PvP so we can record as much data as possible
    • Campaign durations and leaderboards will not be adjusted during this week
We encourage all players to continue their PvP activities in their respective Home, Guest, and Friends campaigns – we will be taking feedback and monitoring data on a daily basis during this test, and look forward to reading your constructive posts about server performance during the time of the test.

The results of this test will determine the next course of action for refining Cyrodiil server performance. Thank you for your perseverance and patience – we thoroughly appreciate your time, efforts, and feedback!

Thanks again, and see you in Cyrodiil!

Camelot Unchained is the biggest threat to ESO and ZoS failed to see it. 4 years ago there were people talking about it and we all knew what was going to happen when it was officially launched.

ZoS had 4 years to fix the lag, instead they took the easy route of selling chapter after chapter. CU is now just around the corner... and there's no way ESO will dare to compete against that monster.

ZOS had the exact same hype about ESO that CU has had. DO you really think CU will be able to hold up tp their promise? ESO didn't, why should CU?

I'm a tester/backer for CU. Whether it is a game you want to play or even if the game turns out to be not particularly fun or good, the engine DOES live up to the challenge of thousands of people on screen and they are still optimizing.

CU is not intended to be a mass market MMO. ESO's PVE side is certainly under no threat.

We'll try, and they'll probably close the thread because they care more about the health of the forums than the health of the game.

According to this article, 2019 is going to be a huge year for ESO.

It even got me excited a little. Maybe they found the uber-fix for lag issues in PvP.

Edit: nvm. They only talk of PvE: "As such, next year’s story and adventure will be something truly special for all Elder Scrolls Online players. We are so excited to be able to share it with you soon, and we can’t wait to see how you all put all the pieces together starting early next year."

So probably nothing for PvP. Bummer

Necro thread. Those of you too new to remember, all those changes had to be reversed. ( truly infinite load screens ) it was catastrophic if I recall. This is as good as Cyrodil is ever going to be. Sorry. It will not get any better. It’s been how long now? A year? Maybe two? It’s not going to get fixed. Deal with it.

I don't have any experience with competitors, but the lack of a compelling PvP alternative that is more performant makes me think this is hard to do. I remember close to launch people talking about biding time for CU, but that still isn't around. As the CU comment earlier mentions, that game is really dedicated to that and not for the larger audience ESO caters to, my being in that PvE story loving group.

I hope another game can really scratch that itch people have for large scale PvP 24/7. I like PvP as a periodic chance of pace (usually during events in my case or when leveling) as it can be fun to group in Cyrodiil, but expecting this game to perform well at this point seems a bit unrealistic.

To be clear, I'm NOT telling people to not ask ZOS to improve performance. Consumers SHOULD do that if they are unhappy with a product a company is marketing. But it makes sense to ZOS to play to their strengths as this engine probably isn't going to compete with something build focused on PvP only.

TBH, much more than that. They need to bring down the game for a couple of weeks/months to attempt a fix (that could even not be the one the game needs), then they need to gather all the people that left for those months, expecting a return of less than 50% if we are optimistic.

During those months the company does not have revenues (for obvious reasons); and after the fix it is probable they will never receive any amount of money as good as what they receive previous to the fix attempt because there will be less people.

So fixing the game turns out to be a bad idea not because the operational cost, but for the costs in the long run.

that's what they have done all these years, but they need some testing before releasing the fix... which reminds me there's a new PTS cycle coming next week.

Yup. As long as people keep buying crates and chapters. Pve is their money maker. No incentive to even care about pvp.

I suspect that when CU releases there will be a mass exodus from eso pvp. At that point, lag will clear up due to a much smaller population playing. Zos, to save face, will time a statement claiming they fixed it, but in actuality it was due to mass exodus. zos either ignores the truth or covers it up. It's better for their bottom line to stay silent than to be transparent. And that is why this company is garbage. Between the fallout 76 debacle and how they false advertise through faking this game shows how garbage this company is. I barely play anymore, when I do, it's to test the performance in the hopes that it's been fixed. 4 years later. Nope. I've given this company so much money since beta. For years I subscribed hoping my money would improve performance. Nope, they cash grab and stay silent.

They lied about this game going free to play. They lied about not charging for expansions for subscribers. DLCs, chapters, whatever same thing. They lied about the advertising for this games pvp capabilities. They lied about what the end game would be. They lied about Perma banning the CE users. They lied about fixing the bot problem. They lied about the lighting patch. If you're an oceanic player out of Hawaii using spectrum they lie about why the patcher doesn't work and tell everyone to use a VPN. They lied about their player count. They claim they have 11 million accounts. How many are active? They won't tell you that. Lies, lies, lies. Crooks.
