No, don't ever add these into the game.
If there's one thing I don't like about ESO, it's the RNG. RNG boxes that you pay for sounds like a recipe for disappointment, sadness and many salty tears.

Instead of making it a random chance to get old things that are no longer being sold, why don't they just run them in a bi-weekly rotation or something. It'd give players a reason to check the crown store every now and then if they knew there was a possibility that the thing they wanted to buy would return. I have quite a few costumes I'd like to buy since the introduction of the costume dying, but unfortunately a lot of them are no longer in the store, so I'd personally prefer a system like this over a RNG madness.

@AzraelKrieg you might want to check Abielle's video link, which I also shared. It's Matt Firor talking about special mounts being Lockbox/GrabBag/Luckybag/whateverbag exclusives.

I did check that out but even then, I'd prefer to see it in writing. No offense to Matt Firor but he's not exactly the clearest speaker and while I have no trouble understanding him, footage from what I'm assuming is a phone camera isn't always the best. Pretty much, I just want it set in writing that it will only be cosmetic stuff.

haven't voted because there isn't a 'if zos want to add this as an additional revenue stream and people want to buy them i'm fine with that' option.

not something i would bother with...

    @jedtb16_ESO
I think you're missing the issue.

Regardless of whether you want to buy or not there will be exclusive brand new items that can only be obtained via buying a special loot crate.

and as i said i'm fine with that.... since the likelihood of it being anything that would give material advantage in game is remote it really doesn't matter. if people want to spend their money chasing cosmetic items let them.

It's not just purely cosmetic tho.

    Watch the video

i watched the video.... still wondering what the fuss is about. special mounts? i'm sure they will give a real advantage in trials.

like the idea of being able to solo craglorn though.

Aw jeez. I was really hoping this was never going to be a thing. I've seen what happens when games introduce RNG goody boxes and I can tell you it's neither fun or rewarding.

These accursed things are, in every case, just a huge cash vacuum designed to target the desperate and foolish who think they can beat the odds. It is a predatory sales gimmick and should not be encouraged.

I've never seen an RNG box that I liked and I'm concerned that if they introduce this as a way of rereleasing old mounts, costumes etc. it will become the only way they come back and then anyone who missed out the first time around will have no option other than to keep buying boxes and hope they happen to get the item they want.

Also to the people saying if it doesn't include items you've already got that will increase your chances I think you're in for disappointment.

If it works like every other RNG box I know of it will include a whole bunch of crown store consumables. So the vast majority of the time you'll open the box and get a Crown Meal or Drink or maybe an XP scroll. If you're "lucky" you'll get a random riding lesson or bag space upgrade. If you've got an item and it's therefore eliminated from what's available it will only increase your chance of getting consumables, not the other rare items.

This would be unacceptable in any other line of business. Can you imagine going to Target and they were selling $25 mystery boxes that have a $1 pair of socks in them 99.9% of the time? There would be a huge uproar and it would be a PR disaster and rightly so.

This is what some thought of the Star Trek Online casino style lock box's....they started off cosmetic and went full pay 2 win with better stats eventually...

Also all the good armors, ships, effects and styles started to end up only in the lock box's or store, never actually earned in game....less and less actual in game rewards rewards....

It also affected the way the game was played and game design process to push more players towards using the lock box's...

Well, you have such businesses everywhere. It's called lottery. You have slot machines too.
People buy hope. It's their right.

I don't particularly respect companies who run those businesses but ultimately it's the customers' responsibility to buy or not buy these products, and who am I to judge someone who buys hopes, thrills, whatever ?

Nuh huh. I've got way too much experience with lottery boxes from Forsaken World, and here's what I've realised:
    - Themed boxes, e.g. "Pandora's Box": You can find a rare mount and some other items. The drop rate for rare mounts are around 0,67%.
    - It's addictive to some people, not me though, I always managed to control myself!
    - It's a great way for the devs to earn money, as people will gamble
    - It's also causing the Player Base to get annoyed, since most of the games goes over the top with it. Like "Oh, let's implement new boxes every week instead of maintenance!"
    - All in all, I don't mind it. As long as it's not gonna be the main focus from the devs, as it brings in a lot of moneyZ.
Ignorance is the greatest weapon of tyranny.

As someone who has played SWTOR and has seen how almost every item worth having comes from a lockbox, then read accounts from people who spent literally hundreds of $$$ in the hope of getting that cool super-rare item and never did, I profoundly dislike this move.

At first, it'll be "cosmetic items" and some exclusive mounts. Later it'll be costumes, motifs, service tokens and other attractive items we won't be able to get anywhere else, mark my words. The purpose of these loot boxes is to get people to gamble as much money as possible on them, which inevitably means cutting the supply from other sources.

    although it really depends how its implemented;

if they introduce a mount box, a costume box, a pet box & an accessory box (each box priced around what those items usually cost) thats fine, imho

but assuming mystery boxes will be about 2,500 (typical price of a mount) for a box in the hope of getting the ice horse lands me with a 200 crown hat that i could of bought, didnt buy cause i didnt like it & have no regrets about missing out on will be disheartening to say the least!

from my MMO experience, and after watching this video like 10+ times (jump to 7:50)
    https://youtu.be/4UcmPeXG7qQ?t=474

loot boxes are going to work like that:
cost 400 crowns << really low\ cost means really BAD chances to get anything of worth

Drops from boxes = Something like
    Guaranteed: 1 consumable
    +
    nothing (50% chance)
    or
    1 item drop of:
green quality(30%) random unpopular cosmetics and pets (like expect to get a TON of mudcabs from lootboxes)
blue quality (15% chance)random popular cosmetics and pets an even some unpopular mounts (all those horses recolors ;D)
purple quality (5% chance): dro mathra senche mount, other rare mounts, breton hero armor ;D
gold quality (1% chance): super rare boxes exclusive mounts and other stuff

There should be a random box that could drop from anywhere and from anyone (max 1 box per day). Box would have very unique and rare cosmetic stuff, also new and old crown store items and maybe some random in-game stuff..Possibly also housing stuff.
When the box drops you would have to open it with keys which you buy from crown store OR if you are a subscriber you can open them for free (always or certain amount of times with keys that would come in addition of crowns when you sub.)
