Using a keyboard on a console is not alien, its something many few of us have done for years.

    I corrected your text.

Many people even don't know you can attach a keyboard to a console.
In a very few games the keyboard has an important role.

Most game companies just ignored the keyboard or supported it very weakly. Hey, you can use a keyboard in the Console version of ESO too. For mailing. But it isn't wow. You can't switch between recipient, subject and message using your keyboard.

And that’s a bit the standard in almost every console game.

We are all trained and somehow forced to use the gamepad and to ignore the keyboard on the console.
You make a lot of assumptions for someone who is constantly asking people not to make assumptions. PeopIe are not as dumb as you are making them out to be, we live in a tech savvy world

You overestimate people. Ever wonder why TV shows, aimed at adults, for example insert "don't try this at home" disclaimers or fast food companies attach a "hot contents" print to their cups and so on? Because there's a lot of clueless people out there. How about those people that sit for hours upon hours without breaks playing games and then run to the press saying [inset random game here] gave them a fit etc. There's a reason why common sense disclaimers get inserted and it's not because we're all too smart.

We're not talking about life or death here, its just a little box in the corner of your screen that you can turn on or off.

Ok then, regardless of whether people are smart/dumb, there is still no valid reason not t have an optional text chat in th game, don't like it, turn it off

Sure, the whole world is nerdy.

    Unfortunately it's not.

For most people the USB connection on their PS4 is just an undefined hole, you can stick something in it, but they don't know what.

    It's my job to know.

Computer literacy among most people is limited to a few pieces of software, websites or hardware. If they are confronted with something unusual or out of the scoop of the few programs, websites or hardware they know, they paralyze.

How and when would they have learned you can connect a keyboard to a console? Few games supported it in the past, there's no insensitive to know that specific knowledge.

Sure, some lateral thinkers could fix this situation without the knowledge. But how many people are good at lateral thinking?

    Very few.

Your opinion is like stating “Most car drivers are fantastic mechanics”. Ok.

But hey, I'll see if I can dig-up a study for you about the issue. It seems you’re interested in the subject.

No reasons for having no TextChat?

So the device shifting (keyboard/gamepad) is fun?
Or entering a text via a gamepad is fun?

I love that there is no old fashioned text chat. It's fun walking around hearing everyone else talking and quickly talking in a group about tactics instead of having to continually stop and tap out a reply.

    Please no text chat.

If they added it, they would need a non-spam feature. If you play other MMO's quite often the chat is just filled with advertisements to buy gold from websites and what not.

And what if the option, a bit exaggerated, was only turned on by you?

And that's the bottom line. There's no doubt that some people would use TextChat, the question is "how many?" or more likely "how few?".

And unlike you, ZOS has the data, the budget and the knowledge to figure that one out. I know they did, at least maybe partly.

Options, even simple things, cost a lot of money. If the ROI isn't good, they you shouldn't develop it.

I'm going to make an assumption here. "probably a mistake, but here we go."
I'd say at least half of ESO's population has played a previous console mmo. So at least they know to plug a KB in.

I'll admit the day I put FF11 in my 360 and first stepped out of Bastok I was amazed how people were typing to me so fast using a controller until a friendly stranger told me to plug in a KB and just hit enter to type. That was 9 years ago and not the first console mmo to do it.
I want to change the world. I'm just to lazy to do it.

Going by the countless threads I've seen, I know I'm not that will have it on. Its not going to cost that much to implement a chat box, its very basic coding. Unless they stick a mandatory vote on the signing in screen theres no way of knowing true numbers, regardless of how many studies they do.

I'm fine without text only gripe is players without mics or those that refuse to use them in a vet pledge. Also could do without that one attention starved loser in the bank that gets himself ignored by blaring ghetto rap or explict videos of p*rn sfx

Final fantasy 14 has text chat only and imo it works a lot better than voice only. I logged tuesday night and had all my stuff done within a few hours. The next night I logged into ESO and after a few hours of trying to get a group, I gave up. Im not asking that the game be text only, just that it be included as an option.

Time will tell if the omission of text chat in the console version of ESO determines its future success and longevity.

The other console mmos I've played are still going, especially DCUO after many years. I genuinely hope Console ESO has the same long lasting appeal, and is not hindered or held back by such a small detail.

Anyway this is my last post on the subject, so peace out peeps.

Yeah, im giving up too, the lack of response from zos is becoming frustrating to say the least. I wish they would give a definite yes or no, at least then I'd know if the game is worth my while. I want it to be, but at the moment, it just isn't.

Probably a long time ago as I did. As to how? In my case I was tired of using a controller to type on my Xbox360, because to me that can be a real pita. Thinking to myself, there should be a way to attach a real keyboard to this thing. Eyed the usb port on the console..eyes shifted to usb keyboard on the desk.. eyes returned to usb port on console... hmmm.. I wonder... Plugged in keyboard to usb port on console. Oh happy day :-)
BTW this entire scene, noting a problem, thinking a possible solution, planning how to carry it out, and action took less than a minute. Cant explain why, perhaps Im just especially gifted from being part of PC master race and all? lol
Seriously I doubt it, but it seems that some believe this way, as there is no issue with adding controller support to PC game. There appears to be little doubt on anyones part that the PCers will quickly and effortlessly master the art of the switching back and forth of devices (one doesnt really see any such complaints about 'device switching' or becoming confused over how to plug a controller into their PC?). Where on the other hand, the belief that our console peasant gamer brothers will struggle with not only comprehending this complexities of this concept, but also experience great difficulty and/or confusion in carrying out the plugging in/switching process seems to be common than I would have thought.*

*To clarify, I personally I dont share this belief. I believe console players are just as capable as any PC player of figuring out how to drop an item with one hand and pick up a different item with the other (with some determination and a good amount of practice of course ;) )

Have you done any reasearch into how controller support operates for PC? It's a mess. ZOS does not have the knowledge to make informed decisions and are forcing a hastily designed console UI on PC players in order to add controller support, which few PC players will even use. This is compounded by the fact that a third party program (Xpadder) will allow PC players to use a controller without having to downgrade to the console UI and still allow for full add-on support. Serioulsy, read up on the limitations of controller support for the PC and then try to make this same argument.

Pino is making constant assumptions and the tells others off for making them. It got to the stage in the last thread that I wanted to go through the entire thread and paste every assumption made, but I remembered I'm a grown up lol.

Seriously though I personally think text chat is a must for area communication. I'm loving this game but it feels like a ES but with ocassinal other people running around. I've made it into one dungeon and that was really good fun but so frustrating to get grouped up in the first place.

The whole argument about it being difficult to switch between controller and keyboard is a bit silly to me. I use an apple Bluetooth keyboard and have never had a problem switching. I used to main a healer in FFXIV and could easily keep a conversation up while keeping everyone a live. I'm enjoying playing now ESO but I'm only level 21. Will prob keep playing till I get to veteran but can easily see my self only pvping at that point as getting into a group is much easier there.

One thing I've observed through these threads, the forums and Twitch chat as well as game that have text chat.

The forums is a good example + advertisements and spam of why text chat isn't a good idea and why typing to communicate can add value but not in a text chat format.

I think everyone who wants another way to effectively communicate outside of voice makes sense but placing a hard to
Manage box on the screen that requires additional hardware in order for it to be effective isn't the answer.

I've not seen a idea that would offer logic, ease of use, absent of spam, needing moderators and being clunky.
The consoles would seem to be best to offer an overlay window for any and all games that a game dev could build upon but there are still challenges there.

Just my thoughts as this goes round and round and ends locked due to personal attacks

I would turn it off if possible. I've never seen a chat box that wasn't poorly moderated and spammed by trolls, ESPECIALLY on consoles.

seems you never were on warframe then

The exception that makes the rule, it seems.

    Both Final Fantasy mmo's.
HA. Even I trolled in FFXI.

    "r u b grl?"
    "Hey evry1, ****** iz a grl!"

Then wait for the feeding frenzy to begin. Every time.

Huh... Idk must have been from a different server because I rarely ever saw it.
It's still not as bad as when a woman talks in voice chat and it seems as though a good portion of guys playing the game become neanderthals.

Lol this Lady yesterday was talking frisky to some guys in area chat and they didn't even know what to do it was awesome. She turned it around on them and they froze up.

But I mean All i really need is an area text chat to LFG in for dungeons, and a group text chat for dungeons so i can say stuff like "not using my mic my kid is yelling and banging toys together for the next 6 hours" Or "stop dying and we won't wipe. Don't try to blame it on the guy with no mic who hasn't died once"

I use my mic after my kid goes to bed but he plays his ipad and toys all day and i got nothing to do but game. People don't want to hear him yell and be a kid over my mic. That's fine i understand but i'd love to be able to type simple stuff to them like "I can hear you, it's all good" Custom chat boxes would help using the system already in place. Just add a vulgarity filter. Let me make 4-5 custom chat boxes to display

Because less people would use voice to chat or look for groups in the game. You would be assaulted by endless spamming of selling gold, bites and other useless garbage. It would spoil the immersion in a fun game having to keep stopping whatever you were doing and open up the keyboard and slowly tap out your message while hopefully not being attacked.

This is the same flawed logic that led to PC account copies being a reward for the console delay. Consoles need improve guild, zone, and trade chat (cross-faction). No voice improvements will solve these needs. Likewise, these solutions need to be real-time so email and forums will not work either. I mean just look at how long purchased items take to deliver; now imagine needing to relog every time you want to check the status of your LFG or trade request. Talk about suboptimal compared to text chat.
