Heck, you can minimize the text chat so it isn't visible on the PC version and that doesn't even have any other methods of communication.

Nobody wants it NOT to be optional. We just want it to exist. : )

Then I'd have no problem, I just want the option to not have it. On a side note, this place is so much better than the destiny forums......ugh.

Zenimax, thank you for finally bringing ESO to consoles. I transferred my PC character and I love playing on BOTH PC and PS4...that being said...

Please implement an optional text chat function where one could freely type what they want, just like the PC version...just like FFXIV, just like Neverwinter on Xbox One...

I'm fine with making a huge chat box if i have to!!!

But by all means, make it optional for those who don't want it to turn it off and hide it.

    Thanks!!

My idea for text chat for consoles.

    Chat Bubbles.
    Add customization options.

    On / Off
Fade Distance - Choose how far away you want to be before chat bubbles load.
Friends Only - Only see chat bubbles of friends.
Group Only - Only see chat bubbles of your group.
Stay Time - How long chat bubbles stay up.
Alliance / Raid / Group Only - For PvP and PvE situations.

    Etc.

This keeps the UI clean and people can still not see a global/area gold bot spam a website non stop.

Please do not use a chat box!

Because they all left. ESO wasnt a good investment. However with every new release they ALWAYS jump on a game. It would have been no different for consoles had there been a chat box. It would have taken a 1-3 months for them to be cleared out. By then the game would have been damaged.

So you're saying those who run the gold bot websites aren't wise enough to just wait until text chat is implemented to start spamming. You do know they make a derp amount of money selling pixels, right? Surely they are smart enough to keep up with current events in the console market as well? ;)

Many people just don't feel comfortable chatting with strangers on the mic. It's kinda weird and awkward, but give them text chat, and they will be much more open. I'm one of those people, it takes a while for me to get comfortable talking around strangers. Give me text chat, and I'm happy. I will gladly call for help, answer people's questions if I can, and just join in random conversations with people. It's fun, convenient, and way less intrusive than hearing people breathe like dogs or having to hear people's crap music.

Please Zenimax, give us text chat.

Solid point here. There are so many times that I can't do certain groups in Cyrodil (can't probably isn't the right word) because TS is required and I really don't want to hear conversation or other stuff while I'm playing. That's my issue and I don't blame groups that want TS used throughout at all. I just don't participate in those.

I spoke about my wife a bit earlier in the thread, but for me personally, while I don't have any problem w/ talking to others in a game... My wife and I have opposite schedules, which means that she's asleep most of the time that I have to play.

So I generally opt not to use VC simply because I don't want to wake her most of the time. I suppose I could wake her up and tell her to go to a different room so I can play video games, but that sorta defeats the purpose of not waking her up in the first place.

If this bothers you, why not turn it off as everyone has recommended turning off Area Chat in-game if that is irritating to us?

^^^It goes beyond "irritating" to the average console player...we like our controllers and headset for coms.

And that's perfectly fine too. Adding text chat does not stop you from doing exactly this. And you could turn it off, as mentioned above.

^^^Keeping text chat on the PC and out of consoles does not stop ppl from rolling the game effectively either.

Nothing you just wrote helps the situation for selling wares or grouping up for non-dungeon content in the least. There are a number of in-game systems that are entirely obtuse to actually use in-game, and that is an issue.

^^^ I bed to differ. Trading guilds, the fourms if needed (that are very active) taking a chance and speaking with the many, many ppl in game around u, being in a guild with others who would surly help other guildies quest etc..

Your solution of "just ignore it" simply isn't good enough for many of us.

^^^ I said "ignore it"? Wat is "it"? u lost me on this one.

And soon, PC will also have optional Voice Chat, making it a far more versatile experience for gamers. Consoles should not be left out of this flexibility, as each avenue of communication excels in different situations. VC cannot replace text chat for certain things, just as text chat cannot replace voice communication in other examples.

^^^ Idk about that, seems a lot of pc players are complaining about ZOS not fixing etc much since launch...wat makes adding VC to pc a top priority above gameplay bugs fixes and new content etc? Teamspeak or vent does just fine for vc on the pc.
We console players do not feel "left out" by not having to text chat.

What a silly example, considering that this was an entirely 3rd person game before players complained about no 1st person view being available, and ZOS was wise enough to add it prior to launch for those who enjoy that style of gameplay. And the game has been much better for it, as it allows BOTH walks of life to enjoy their time in-game.

^^^ I don't think it's "silly". And I wouldn't have rolled any of the Elder scrolls nor ESO had they not offered 3rd person view.I wouldn't have went on the devs page/fourm complaining either..I'd just simply buy wat best suited me and my needs/wants.

That's all that we are asking for here, a way that players of BOTH preferences to enjoy their time in-game, especially in light of how wonky the systems that were originally designed w/ text chat in mind have become w/out it.

^^^ All we the console controller using players are asking is to keep it in line with wat we are used to...controller and mic. PC gamers are used to keyboard and mouse and texting/typing. Again, this game is on the PC for those who have to have text...no complaints from most console players as to wat or wat is not available with the PC version...I think it should be the same for the console version.[/quote]

Speak for your self not the entire Console playing population because your views are just that YOURS. Text chat is a absolutely required for a console MMO, Just recently i was trying to buy a few items in Auridon main town with no luck all i could hear was static, Background music, Kids screaming and occasionally i could make out a word or two here and there not only could i not hear any one else over all this i doubt any one else could hear me rendering the whole system useless i kept at it for about 40 minutes with no luck tried moving to different areas of the town but the Voice range is so long that where ever i went it was just the same. in comparison to this i could of just sent out 1 message in a trade channel in the chat box and have been done with it.

And before people jump on and say use a guild store, i refuse to have my prices dictated to me by a handful of guilds i Did not use the guild stores on PC and i wont use them on console. Free Trade!!

Only people that come from pc to console make this to seem as a problem...You would be surprise to know that the majority of players playing the game right now and having fun, while pc transfers try to replicate their pc experience on console as the the "best way of playing a game".

You know what? If you dont like console version dont play it.

And there is not an option for players to use chat or not if it introduces. Imagine half your guild have keyboard plugged in and using chat and half does not..imagine in the world players write to you and expect you to write back. I did not bought a console to play games with keyboard on my feet..

Get used to it, or return to pc version. I doubt there is even a single person on forums that is a console player and not a pc player who moved on console.

You seem like a very closed-minded individual.
Everybody in the world has a life EXACTLY LIKE YOURS, right?
    WRONG!

I have been WAITING for this to come to console...why?
Because the only PC in my house is my Wife's.
Therefore I can't just "go back to PC"....I never played it on PC.

I play on the console because I PREFER CONSOLES at this point in my life.
And, if I buy something available to BOTH PCs & Consoles, I expect the SAME functionality no matter what system I choose to use it on.

You argument is like saying if the one console version offered Text Chat, and the other did not, then people should just be compelled to spend THEIR money to buy another system.

Sorry for this rant, but this "One World View" of yours is EXACTLY what makes me hate being Human.

i play in both, but will switch back to FF 14 in console when the expansion will be released.
I give this game a fair chance and will maybe come back when things get adressed, but tbh its just incomplete cause text chat is such a no brainer for a MMORPG.
Maybe things change, maybe not, only 1 is for sure, the console UI is a mess, to many things missing to get an multiplayer experience, and thats the point about a MMORPG.
In our day and age you simply cant release something like that without getting critisized.
Do things different is ok as long as it works out, but it doesnt 100 %.

Text chat has more benefits than cons, and makes managing things in larger groups so much better.
And if i use now a wireless keyboard on couch compared to a Headset makes no difference, besides with text chat your able to communicate with several people at the same time, thats not possible with voice only.

@Ace-2112 and this is yours world view. Do you understand that if they add chat there wont be an option to use it or not? That everyone should be expected to have it? The ps4 came with a controlled that have a place to plug in a headset, it didnt came with keyboard.

Why should i play in your world view then? If chat gets into the game people will write to me and i will try to speak to them..but guess what...they will not have a headset on and i will not have a keyboard..guilds will expect you to have keyboard.

Whoever thinks that text chat will be "optional" is either too naive or (and most possible) he tries this argument to sound "fair" and think that he can fool others about it.

The Devs have been QUOTED as saying if/when Text Chat comes to consoles it WILL NOT be like on PC.
They do NOT want a huge chat box.

And...I think if you look at just about every post asking for Text Chat they do want OPTIONAL...just like Voice Chat is OPTIONAL right now.
So...Voice was put into the game as Optional...why wouldn't Text also be?

I just spent the last 8 months playing Destiny.
Which when compared to ESO has VERY limited Voice Chat, and NO Text Chat.
That game was NEVER released on PC, but guess what...there were HUNDREDS of threads asking for Text Chat...yeah...from CONSOLE PLAYERS.
Which seems to go against your whole "Only PC players ever want text chat." theory.

The game is scoring lower than its potential due to lack of text chat. Example: IGN's review.

It's a bit more complicated than pure user preference. Apparently people cannot form guilds, cannot trade, and can't communicate in Cyrodiil.

Without addon though, console players will not notice the bug riddled abilities. They either don't work, don't do what the say, or have hidden delays in them. That's what makes me sad. Unless things are that much different on the other platforms.
Anyone know? I'm sure that stuff wasn't fixed before the port, so it should lower the review scores a bit. Imo.

The ps4 and xbox Controller also come with a plug to use a Controller mounted Keyboard that you can buy in a bundle with the console of your choosing your argument is mute. And what do you mean it wont be Optional? of course it will be in every mmo i have ever played if you dont want a chat box on your screen you can disable it. Your second point is also just completely useless guilds will expect you to have a keyboard? why would they expect you to have a keyboard? you gave no reason as to why and i cant think of one that would make any sense

Voice chat hasn't worked well for me. Right now, it's going crazy, it keeps saying "Voice channel changed to area" every 5 seconds. I interacted with some random dude who helped me out, we were messing around with the emotes. It was funny. I was willing to voice chat with him but the damn thing doesn't even work. I had to add him as a friend, and message him through xbox live. Very inconvenient, it was a slow process. Something so simple can have a huge impact on the game, and this is one of them.

There's no excuse, I don't care what Zenimax says. This is frustrating as hell.

People who want to use it will. People who don't want to use it won't.

Pretty simple. Although most people will probably use text for some things, such as selling / recruiting / finding groups, and use voice chat for when they are actually IN a group or doing anything where a delayed communication might be detrimental.

This argument that "Oh, if some people use it, then everyone has to use it" is silly. Of course they don't. People use this ridiculous line of thought when talking about addons on the PC too, and yet there are still tens of thousands of players happily playing the game w/out them, and that's perfectly fine.

If you don't want to use it, then you'll very likely end up playing w/ other people who also don't want to use it, and nothing will have changed for you. At all.
