They'd be completely remiss if it wasn't optional.
Heck, you can minimize the text chat so it isn't visible on the PC version and that doesn't even have any other methods of communication.
Nobody wants it NOT to be optional. We just want it to exist. : )

Chat Bubbles.
Add customization options.
On / Off
Fade Distance - Choose how far away you want to be before chat bubbles load.
Friends Only - Only see chat bubbles of friends.
Group Only - Only see chat bubbles of your group.
Stay Time - How long chat bubbles stay up.
Alliance / Raid / Group Only - For PvP and PvE situations.
Etc.
This keeps the UI clean and people can still not see a global/area gold bot spam a website non stop.
Please do not use a chat box!
Because we all see "global/area gold bot spam" non-stop on PC right now... Oh wait, we don't actually.

Because they all left. ESO wasnt a good investment. However with every new release they ALWAYS jump on a game. It would have been no different for consoles had there been a chat box. It would have taken a 1-3 months for them to be cleared out. By then the game would have been damaged.

I'm one of those people, it takes a while for me to get comfortable talking around strangers. Give me text chat, and I'm happy. I will gladly call for help, answer people's questions if I can, and just join in random conversations with people. It's fun, convenient, and way less intrusive than hearing people breathe like dogs or having to hear people's crap music.
Please Zenimax, give us text chat.

Solid point here. There are so many times that I can't do certain groups in Cyrodil (can't probably isn't the right word) because TS is required and I really don't want to hear conversation or other stuff while I'm playing. That's my issue and I don't blame groups that want TS used throughout at all. I just don't participate in those.

If this bothers you, why not turn it off as everyone has recommended turning off Area Chat in-game if that is irritating to us?
^^^It goes beyond "irritating" to the average console player...we like our controllers and headset for coms.
And that's perfectly fine too. Adding text chat does not stop you from doing exactly this. And you could turn it off, as mentioned above.
^^^Keeping text chat on the PC and out of consoles does not stop ppl from rolling the game effectively either.
Nothing you just wrote helps the situation for selling wares or grouping up for non-dungeon content in the least. There are a number of in-game systems that are entirely obtuse to actually use in-game, and that is an issue.
^^^ I bed to differ. Trading guilds, the fourms if needed (that are very active) taking a chance and speaking with the many, many ppl in game around u, being in a guild with others who would surly help other guildies quest etc..
Your solution of "just ignore it" simply isn't good enough for many of us.
^^^ I said "ignore it"? Wat is "it"? u lost me on this one.
And soon, PC will also have optional Voice Chat, making it a far more versatile experience for gamers. Consoles should not be left out of this flexibility, as each avenue of communication excels in different situations. VC cannot replace text chat for certain things, just as text chat cannot replace voice communication in other examples.
^^^ Idk about that, seems a lot of pc players are complaining about ZOS not fixing etc much since launch...wat makes adding VC to pc a top priority above gameplay bugs fixes and new content etc? Teamspeak or vent does just fine for vc on the pc.
We console players do not feel "left out" by not having to text chat.
What a silly example, considering that this was an entirely 3rd person game before players complained about no 1st person view being available, and ZOS was wise enough to add it prior to launch for those who enjoy that style of gameplay. And the game has been much better for it, as it allows BOTH walks of life to enjoy their time in-game.
^^^ I don't think it's "silly". And I wouldn't have rolled any of the Elder scrolls nor ESO had they not offered 3rd person view.I wouldn't have went on the devs page/fourm complaining either..I'd just simply buy wat best suited me and my needs/wants.
That's all that we are asking for here, a way that players of BOTH preferences to enjoy their time in-game, especially in light of how wonky the systems that were originally designed w/ text chat in mind have become w/out it.
Only people that come from pc to console make this to seem as a problem...You would be surprise to know that the majority of players playing the game right now and having fun, while pc transfers try to replicate their pc experience on console as the the "best way of playing a game".
You know what? If you dont like console version dont play it.
And there is not an option for players to use chat or not if it introduces. Imagine half your guild have keyboard plugged in and using chat and half does not..imagine in the world players write to you and expect you to write back. I did not bought a console to play games with keyboard on my feet..
Get used to it, or return to pc version. I doubt there is even a single person on forums that is a console player and not a pc player who moved on console.
@Ace-2112 and this is yours world view. Do you understand that if they add chat there wont be an option to use it or not? That everyone should be expected to have it? The ps4 came with a controlled that have a place to plug in a headset, it didnt came with keyboard.
Why should i play in your world view then? If chat gets into the game people will write to me and i will try to speak to them..but guess what...they will not have a headset on and i will not have a keyboard..guilds will expect you to have keyboard.
Whoever thinks that text chat will be "optional" is either too naive or (and most possible) he tries this argument to sound "fair" and think that he can fool others about it.
Have a nice day too

This is how I imagine ZoS when they're faced with the issue

People who want to use it will. People who don't want to use it won't.
Pretty simple. Although most people will probably use text for some things, such as selling / recruiting / finding groups, and use voice chat for when they are actually IN a group or doing anything where a delayed communication might be detrimental.
This argument that "Oh, if some people use it, then everyone has to use it" is silly. Of course they don't. People use this ridiculous line of thought when talking about addons on the PC too, and yet there are still tens of thousands of players happily playing the game w/out them, and that's perfectly fine.
If you don't want to use it, then you'll very likely end up playing w/ other people who also don't want to use it, and nothing will have changed for you. At all.
