I agree. Everything in this thread is from a fresh & new perspective that had not been previously discusssed to death.

You should have just thanked me for the bump.

Thank you for you very constructive input on the current situation of ESO console's Communication functions.

Voip Chat is good for groups, but only for groups. In a regular town like Daggerfall, it simply doesn't work at all. I can hardly hear or understand anyone at all, so I have to turn off Area Chat because all I get is distorted noises and annoying background sounds.

This will have to be changed, and the sooner ZOS understands that, the sooner we can actually use the Multiplayer part of the MMORPG.
  • ferdiverbeekeb17_ESO2
Text Chat is definitely needed. This far, I saw a lot of people using a headset but I had 0 talks. The voice channels are only used for 'noise'.

The thing that annoys me about this is that there are people who DON'T want it at all.

I could understand if you said something like "If its added I won't us it", but saying not to add it AT ALL is just silly, same with saying "its the console version, not the pc", guess what, there have been other console mmos, and they supported text chat, there is no reason a console version a can't have text chat.

As for going the websites and forums outside the game to chat and other stuff, can't you see that is silly and needless?
Would it not be better for the game to just support that WITHIN the game?
Saying the games UI and stuff was totally redesigned with console in mind to make it a better experience in one thread, then telling people to LEAVE the game to talk to each other if they don't want to use a mic in another thread? Your contradicting yourselves.

Text chat SHOULD be in the game, not every one HAS to use it, it could be turned on and off in the option menu, but it SHOULD be part of the game, its makes everything easier for those who want it, and totally has no effect on the people who don't.

Destiny has millions of active players...still
This is/has more than its PC version (but it's launch)

Just me but I left PC mainly for three reasons.
1 text box mess (and what comes with it)
    2 controller support
    3 native voice chat

Destiny is not an mmo, even Bungie say Destiny is not a mmo, while playing Destiny you will run across maybe, 4-6 people out in the wild and like, 20 in the Tower, its not like ESO where there can be 20 people in 1 room or over 50 people in the center of a town.
Destiny has less active people in 1 area at a time then even normal shooters like CoD or Battlefield do, thats why it doesn't need text chat.

I'm just going to throw in my few cents of what little I have left! There are two sides to this conversation and they are very strongly backed on each end HOWEVER, we can all agree that the voice chat in-game needs to be tweaked heavily. I hate walking through town and hearing someone yell on the mic: "WHAT? WHAT DID YOU SAY MOM?.... DO THE DISHES?" and I have no way of escaping that from completely blocking the person or leaving the area. Also It would be nice to have some way to sell some of the things I create. I love creating armors and weapons and giving it to noobs or people that want crafted gear, but i can barely find anyone in voice chat while saying "Does anybody want free armor or weapons?" orr "Does anybody want to buy this racial motif book?" It's annoying that there is no way for me to communicate properly so all users have a chance to see it. It definately hinders my playstyle, but that being said, seeing a whole bunch of spam or other annoying things in chat wouldn't be good either. So for my point on the matter... i'm leaning towards some sort of text thing either than quick chat... but also make voice chat a lot better so more people want to use it! (Maybe a trading voice chat channel?)

Theres one option in the meantime, theres purposely created Guilds just for trading the one im in is for ps4 NA http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/174475/pawn-shop-recruting-people-to-buy-and-sell-items

but if you look in Guild recruitment http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/categories/guild-recruitment you should find one in your region/console and they are a great solution for the time being just using the Guild store

i struggle to understand how zenimax thought it would be a good idea to only have VOIP. how did this decision get through the beta phases surely some one picked up on the issues it would cause. not only that they have essentially made it impossible for people hard of hearing to communicate with others. and those text bubble emoticon things that are there instead of the chat box are a god dam joke.

Many of us used the post-beta survey expressly to go into great detail as to why a lack of text chat was a bad thing, basically lining out all of the exact same reasons that people are complaining about now, i.e.,:

    -Difficulty finding groups
    -Difficulty trading
    -Difficulty finding guilds
    -Difficulty managing guilds
-Difficulty communicating long distance with friends
-Difficulty catching server messages (serving going down for maintenance, away from screen for 2 minutes, come back, kicked off mid fight, servers down, no idea why)
-Impossibility of communication for the deaf
-Impossibility of organizing zone-wide PVP efforts
-Impossibility of communicating with more than a predetermined number of people

Text chat not only allows for wider range communication, not only allows for the disabled to communicate AT ALL, but it allows people who don't have a MIC to communicate even if they don't have a KEYBOARD.

I think that kinda destroys any argument over disadvantaging people without keyboards. The controller can function as a less than ideal but still functional input for a virtual keyboard. Meanwhile, I don't care how loud you yell, you can never shout voice comms through a controller with no headset.

The next argument no doubt being that "the console came with a headset". Yes. A flimsy, uncomfortable one that was prone to breaking. So now you have to go buy a decent 3rd party device to use voice chat, same as you would for text chat, the main difference there being that many people have an extra keyboard laying around as a standard USB keyboard from the PC will work just fine. However, most PC headsets use two cable connections, one for the audio and one for the mic, or USB, and the PS4 at least has abysmal USB support for headsets, both console's controller connections are single cable with combined audio/mic.

Literally the only people advantaged by continuing to deny text chat are:

-Trolls enjoying riling up the forums/being noisy and irritating
    -Devs for avoiding work
-Publishers for avoiding paying devs for the work

I have been experimentally leaving Area chat on from time to time, it's not been good. Yesterday while I crafted someone was playing Tourrettes Guy (NSFW) audio incredibly loudly, as soon as that was over someone's child cried until I finished and left. I earlier encountered some group of guys going on about every female model's cleavage for several minutes before one of them squealed a loud, droning noise for a few minutes, after which one of them stated "Now that that's over.." and went back to talking about the female characters' cleavage.

Such great communication, such great community, such great immersion.

The vast majority of people aren't using their mics, and I'm sure even more are actually just leaving all chat every time they zone, adding text chat would not change this and would likely allow the people who are sick of the noise to participate where they otherwise would not.

I'd like to point to a somewhat silly example but a pertinent one, Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare. A PvP shooter, not to be confused with the casual strategy games, it's more like if Nintendo were tasked with making a Battlefield title. Anyway, the most demanded feature and one of the first things they added tot he game was a Mute All button. This is a shooter where one could argue that voice communication would be the only viable option and people demanded the ability to mute EVERYONE so they didn't have to hear the noise. It's not unique to ESO or even the genre.

Other arguments against include gold spammers, well, they're not particularly common on PC anymore, the character deletion time limit was implemented to solve that on PC. It's present on console as well, however, without text chat it's a meaningless hurdle. The fact that there's little to no gold spam on PC is a pretty solid proof that it's a moot argument on console, particularly where they can't use automated systems to create characters, log in, spam, jump channels, etc.

They could emulate some inputs like keyboard input but decent report systems and the character deletion limitations would solve it just the same on console as it was on PC.

There is really no reason to deny players text chat short of artificially limiting them. I've seen every argument against adding text chat made in exactly the same flippant, shortsighted and generally selfish ways in regards to Destiny as here, and it's dramatically worse to not have it here since Destiny doesn't have anything that demands wide ranging communication like world content that really needs a group, trade, giant PVP zones, etc., it just has a couple amateurish raids.

On a serious note it really feels like I'm playing a single player rpg with no text box, the world just seems empty without people talking, trading and advertising stuff in chat.

The lack of communication in the game does make you forget you're playing an mmo. That's happened to me a couple times already. Fortunately about that time someones dog will bark over the air and have me looking around at my dogs to see whats going on. ><

I'm really enjoying this game so far... partly because I'm assuming they can't be silly enough to think text chat can be successfully left out much longer. If that's really the plan long term and they actually stick to it despite the obvious need, I won't be so enthusiastic as I progress.

It's fine while I'm playing through the lower levels with my husband on the couch beside me. But we're going to want to start finding groups and joining a guild soon. I can't imagine feeling a real sense of community in a game where our only real option for communication is a voice chat system that has no 'push to talk' and even those who already have a headset with a physical mute button have to constantly toggle it from the device itself. That's pretty intrusive if you don't, to be unable to make random noises or speak to others in the room without the whole channel hearing.

As a person who intends to use voice chat primarily and especially in groups, having no text chat is still a deal breaker for me. I need to have a choice. I'm not always in the mood to speak or to hear others speaking.

Some things are better said in text. I love being able to see a guild or group chat history of what's going on if I step away for a moment - this helps SO much when it comes to keeping the voice chat clear of the chronic excess noise that can make it so unpleasant at times, with everyone having to chime in and repeat questions and answers.

I don't understand their reasoning for leaving it out - or why we should be happy with it's absense being filled by heavy breathing, irritating music and other peoples screaming kids.

Unfortunately there will always be trolls in the community. But you can't disable our ability to communicate effectively with each other to this degree, especially with a voice chat that lacks 'push to talk', without seriously effecting our enjoyment and attachment to the game.

Please seriously rethink this Zenimax and let the players know your intentions.

People need to stop bringing up Destiny in defence of ZoS's decision making regarding text chat. Destiny has a fully working, multifunctional (PVE/PVP) matchmaking system that takes a minute tops to que, with the only exception being for the 2-3 raids in the game. If the grouping interface in ESO worked as flawlessly as that one, and the only thing that was missing were the 12 man trials, no one would be complaining at all.

False equivalences. Stop making them. You know who you are.

Once again why do we not have chat option? Hold on people are talking in area chat. Someone's mic has a loud dog. Hold on someone's girlfriend or wife is yelling in the background. Did I just hear a siren is someone getting arrested. Ok now see why we need chat? I don't want to hear the whole communities personal problems.

So my two cents: I truly, truly believe we need a text chat OPTION. Not a replacement for voice chat, just an option for text chat. I like the concept behind the voice chat, but it's useless to me if I have to keep turning it off so I don't hear background noise from other people which in turn breaks the immersion I love for any Elder Scrolls game.

To be honest, I'm really loving this game since the servers seemed to stable out a little bit. It has massive potential and would really love to see this game beat the snot out of Neverwinter and DC Universe. But without some simple fixes that really affect gameplay for a lot of people (from what I've read, at least), I just don't see that happening.

So in short, yes...need text chat. Oh, and a freaking search bar in guild stores. God almighty I hate trying to navigate those stores. :(

It's very difficult to find guilds without text chat. Going back and forth with the forums and searching up and down for a suitable guild hoping it's a good trading guild etc. is very cumbersome and annoying.

    Dear Zos-

Please reconsider a Chat Box for those that want it. Make it a option at least. I was logged into the game for about 30 min and had to turn off voice chat because it was really bad. From feedback from others mics to the person constantly yelling and saying the game sucks etc. It is great when in a guild or with a group, but part of the game is interacting with random people to sell/trade items and the voice channel will need to be open to do this and it just is a mess. Give us the option to have chat box and let the end user decide if we want to use it or have it closed.

    Please reconsider this decision.

    Thank You!

[Tweaking the thread title slightly, as we're consolidating discussion of this matter into this thread]

First, if they were to add a text chat box you will still have to turn off voice.

Second, Neverwinter has a text chat box, and you know how many times I have seen someone speak in it? Zero. Though I have not played the game in a while now, so it is possible that a few people have tried typing. It is not easy to type on the consoles, so people don't do it. I know on the Xbox Microsoft has made it easier with the SmartGlass, but once again Neverwinter has had zero chat.

If it wasn't for the lack of text chat, I honestly would've subscribed to ESO Plus already. It is an integral part of an MMO, and doesn't feel complete without it.

I've been playing Neverwinter fairly regularly since it released on XBox One and I can say with certainty that people do, in fact, use the chat box. I don't use it very often for regular solo play or while in Protector's Enclave, but in a group it is very common for me to communicate via text chat.

I find it hard to believe they would leave out text chat on purpose. They probably ran into some issues porting it from PC to console and decided that fixing it would delay the console release and they did not want to delay console release again. So out it goes with no text chat, while they work feverishly behind the scenes to get it in game as soon as possible. They probably knew it would be bad PR, but delaying the game would be even worse PR.

My own opinion, please add text chat. The sooner the better.
Though from the beginning I could not see how this could work with no text chat, Ive been trying to give it a chance anyway. Ive been staying exclusively on console since it came out. But last night being Saturday night when there is usually guild auctions, I went back to visit pc. It occurred to me then no one was left out of communications there. There is no voice chat there, but is anyone complaining they cant communicate with each other or that certain aspects of the game can not be accomplished without leaving the game and going to a console to view a 3rd party site? If so, I havent heard of it.
In the text chat in my short pc visit, not only was I able to watch/participate in the auction, I also saw individual trading, 2 annoucements of a dolmen up, 3 guild recruitment notices, and a lot of just chit chat- some interesting, some not.. but the thing is so many people all communicating/interacting to me this made the game alive, I felt as though I wasnt alone here unlike the console game.
Which brings me to the anti-text chat folks. Yes I do get it. I understand why you dont want it, even if you can shut it off and still keep your voice chat.
For those who dont get it, it seems to me the 'antis' are not as disagreeable as they may appear. From what I understand reading their posts, they DO agree that text is necessary (or at least much more convenient) to do these things and that if text was added many people would use it. But thats the problem. They do not want to see a chat box nor type while they are playing the game. No, its not as simple as 'just turn it off then' because then they are missing out on these things.
And yes, they are also missing out on them now as the way it is, but the difference is as it is now everyone is missing out on these things, where if text was added it would be only them.
IOW I suspect to them its better for all of us to have no interactions and just pretend were in a rather strange designed single player game, if the alternative means they would have to see a chat box and type from time to time or be alienated from parts of the game that the rest have access to.
So yes, I do get it, but cant say I agree. I guess ones opinion on this matter really depends on whether one is looking to play an mmo or if one is looking for the skyrim online/coop game that many wanted in the beginning and were disappointed with the pc version.
Thats my take on it anyway.

Loving this game on ps4 but I do agree text chat is a must, it's the one thing stopping this game from feeling like a classic mmo, there is no excuse for it not being in either, a keyboard is cheap enough to get so hope we get this feature soon would make guild finding and grouping much easier.

Text chat is bad mmmkkk, I bought a game without text on the version I chose..so I got wat I wanted that suits my needs. PC version has text and I chose not to buy it.
