I would love a text chat box. Especially if Microsoft and Sony make Chatpad's for these consoles like they did with the last Gen consoles. I can't believe that these still aren't available yet. I always used both my 360, and PS3 with the Chatpad attached. The Smartglass functions wouldn't really be good, and neither would Controller text entry, since both would use an on screen display that would block 75% of the screen.

Text chat wasn’t added to the consoles because of a number of factors. First, many of our early tests demonstrated what we already knew: it can be cumbersome to type in a text chat with a controller, especially when time counts. This is why we decided to make sure VOIP was integrated into the game from the beginning and why we added our quick chat feature. Second, displaying text for an environment such as couch and TV requires larger fonts. Having small, almost unreadable text is very problematic. A chat window, typical on a PC, just doesn’t translate as well to a living room environment. Having a chat window that was useful, as in legible, meant it was so big it was covering up lots of other elements. These and a few other factors meant we concentrated more on VOIP and Quick Chat. They were the most reliable and best means of communication in the living room environment.
Is it possible we could have a text chat? Yes. Will we? I don’t think we can safely say one way or another. It probably is safe to say if we add a more text centric way to chat it won’t be a straight chat window.
Also, please make sure you mute your Kinect when you don't want to be heard by everyone.
@wazzaroo I've read that statement as well, but he does plainly say that text chat in some form is still a possibility for the future.
Thus, I think it's important for those of us who are interested in seeing such a feature implemented to make our opinions heard so that they know that interest exists.
Many other games have solved these seemingly negligible problems such as font sizes and are currently enjoying success on the very same platforms that ESO exists on, so I feel that saying that text chat is somewhat of a cop-out when it's been employed to great success elsewhere.
The quick-chat wheel is a nice idea and comes in handy for some things, but is simply inadequate for many others. VOIP is also in the same boat where it just falls short for certain activities.
I still wholeheartedly believe the key is proper integration and inclusion of BOTH of these systems so that players can use them in tandem, switching to either whichever method they feel most comfortable w/ or using whichever method is more suitable for the required task.
Again , Zenimax thinks console players are not as smart as PC players. Their reasoning on repeated issues like text chat , controller button remapping , etc has been
" We thought it would be too confusing for players"
They don't trust console players to choose their own controls, or have the OPTION of using text chat.
Apparently FFXIV ARR PS4 players are all Mensa members and the exception , because you can do all of these things in that on the, gasp, console.
Seriously , I'm surprised more aren't irritated that Zenimax pulls out the " we didn't want to confuse you" card for all these things that other games on the console have been doing for years.

Slow down man, you're using far too many big words for us stupid console players. "Irritated"? Is that even a word? You've forced me into an existential quandary over the nature of communication and I'm afraid I'll be overwhelmed by lugubriousness e'erlong, much too forlorn to participate in any further detraction from the Zenimax overlords.
Now pretend that I ate chips into the mic for 15 minutes before disparaging your mother.
Many people on this forum don't like the concept of "options" @Sallington. They have the way THEY think this game should be played and they think everyone should play like them.
Of course the reason they give is that whatever feature is "unneeded" and developing that feature would take away from the development of additional content....
you know, because the writers, 3d modelers, the animators, the level designers, and the voice actors would be the people that would design and code text chat.... [/sarcasm]

ZoS just need to fix the mess they've created. Even though no one will care in a month, so maybe they're just cashing in on console purchases and waiting for the furor to die down and the interest to go elsewhere.
It sounds like people don't care about the argument on either side.
Why it shouldn't be in the game is because it doesn't need it. If you add it you allow people to move away from their primary communication in voice chat. So you would then only have people that used voice chat and people that used text chat. Stop crying and grow a pair and talk to someone that you have never met. I have met new people either helping them or them helping me. Voice chat is an excellent tool that doesn't cause stoppage in game play to try to type out something.
Stop using liberal logic to divide people. Enjoy the game as it is.

What about the ONLY (and I do mean ONLY) sensible option of having both Text Chat and Voice Chat as viable options on all platforms.

They'd be completely remiss if it wasn't optional.
Heck, you can minimize the text chat so it isn't visible on the PC version and that doesn't even have any other methods of communication.
Nobody wants it NOT to be optional. We just want it to exist. : )

Yeah, that dastardly liberal logic... lol

IRC apps would be good enough for the time being and the most multi operating system friendly.
It's optional on the PC version. I turn off zone chat when I'm in non-vet zones. (For reasons all vet players intimately understand.)
When did Rush Limbaugh get here?
