Something occurred to me as I was playing tonight. I don't have a working headset so it isn't a problem for me, but the lack of NPC dialogue subtitles seems like it should make the mandatory voice chat even more of a headache. Can you imagine missing something an NPC said outside of standard dialogue because of another player saying something?

    Talk about design flaws.

It needs to be added into the game. I know have known several people over my MMO lifetime who were deaf and text chat is obviously a must. Also lack of subtitles atm is absolutely stupid for the same reason.

If/When they add it in you will obviously be able to turn it off and not even use it if you don't want to. However attempting to coordinate in Cyro is an absolute joke. PVP campaigns are made up of mostly small groups of people doing things. You cannot coordinate between small groups well without that text chat. Sure all the small groups could choose to go to the public area channel, but then it becomes a nightmare and everyone would just turn off voice anyways.

Just for kicks the last few nights I have been playing I sat in area chat just to see how many people were even logged into voice chat. Out of the larger zergs on my team I saw on the low end 6 and on the high end 13... thats based on an enumeration of 50-60 people. I did walks around the keeps in stealth and monitored and on the sides with few to no players on them 1-3.

During my checks on smaller mobs of players in the 10-20 range 1-5 players seemed to have voice chat area enabled.

In a couple days of checking this on and off I have heard the following game related things in area chat.
    • 2-4 solo players asking what was going on.
    • 2 small groups of players swapping back and forth between group and area chat, attempting to build a warband up, which mostly failed do to very few people having chat enabled.
    • Someone asking for gold to buy a mount
    • Someone asking to be given some free siege equipment.

Now out of all the non game related stuff I hear over chat and randomness (Both PVP/PVE areas of chat)....
    • half a dozen kids who sounded like they were between the ages of 8-13 years old talking crap, dropping the F/N/G bombs like they were going out of style...
    • Several dogs barking over and over again (likely an afker with kinnect on)...
    • Several people singing...
    • Someone practicing guitar...
    • A few moms telling their kids it was bedtime, then kids asking for the typical (just ten more minutes!)
    • Too many people clearing their throats, blowing their noses, sneezing, coughing, heavy breathing, and lol... some loud farting...
    • Some girl setting up a doctors appointment
    • Various random music I hated
    • Various random music I loved (but sounded terrible coming badly). Someone had some really amazing blues guitar instrumental going on in the background as well as someone who loves Epic Rap Battles of History as much as me (I left this guy on while I was doing dishes, I swear he played everyone in order based on the ones I listened to)
    • Random noises (banging, clattering, desk drumming/tapping, emergency vehicles sirens)
    • Gamer rage and tons of cussing at random in-game moments.

What I haven't heard but just expect to hear in the background at some point...(Remember if your in voice chat folks and you are idle, if your controller goes off your headset goes off and by default kinnect now takes over...
    • Actual fighting/violence
    • Sex sounds over chat
    • Personal information

I would love for it to work, but its not a perfect world and it doesn't. I had some good convos with some people and even helped some people. I myself blew my nose or coughed a few times with an open mic but realized it and apologized. I want to be able to communicate with people and be social. But it's not worth the time of having to go in and mute dozens of players to hear the few nuggets worthwhile and its friggin time consuming and even worse, if in cyro you will get yourself killed trying to mute a player or even leaving chat.

Text chat needs to be re-added, it was a big mistake not having it in. Those who don't want to read it, do what I do. Turn it off when you don't need it. But if you need something you can re-enable it real quick ask, get answer, say thanks and disable.

Agreed some of the sounds you hear running through a town are questionable at best hahaha, just last night myself and a mate of mine were running around doing quests in Stonefalls The belrith quest line or something any way along the way i was mining some ore when another player rocked up and started blasting abuse through the microphone because apparently i had taken his mining node while he was destroying items to make room for it, i can deal with abit of rage but he then proceeded to follow me around for about 15 minutes just hurling random insults in his squeaky voice (He sounded Like he was 10) so both my self and my friend left Voip and used the PS4 chat system this left us unable to communicate with any one else except each other. i couldn't even mute said player there is no option to do this atleast if there was a chat box we could have still communicated with others.

Anyway its been fun but I have stuff to do now so toodeloo, have fun in this endeavor to bring back features of the 60´s to a perfectly functioning game.

The big difference here is that you don't lose anything by Zenimax adding this feature. What do you care if they add it or not? You don't care for it, so butt out. It would be an optional feature that you can turn off. [EDITED] Nobody is saying to get rid of voice chat, we're talking about implementing a new feature to the game that was supposed to be there already, how is this a negative thing? This wouldn't hurt the game at all, so please, stop with that nonsense.

Let's be realistic, the voice channel is more than enough. If you choose not to use it, you're just gimping your self. I would however like a "zone chat", area is fine but being able to speak to whoever else is in the same zone would be great. Just for finding dungeons and help with quest/world bosses if nothing else. People crying about kids and stuff are just being silly, I use voice chat at every chance I can get with this game and have not had a problem with kids, or anything else.

Text chat would be fine, but hardly used. More people have headsets than a keyboard hooked up to their PS4.

Also text chat would hardly be used? Yeah tell that to all the players using smart glass on their tablets/phones or who have plugged keyboards directly into their consoles. Neverwinter zones on console are plenty chatty with keyboard users.

@DanielT27 "Text chat would be fine, but hardly used. More people have headsets than a keyboard hooked up to their PS4."

That's because they've never really had a reason to use their keyboards, MMO's have been pretty irrelevant on consoles. But anybody who truly wants to dedicate time to this game, and want text chat option, would buy a keyboard, or use the one from their PC's. There's even the option to buy a chatpad that connects to the controller, which would make it even easier. I had one for my 360, and if they add text chat to this game, that's the first thing I would buy for my XB1 controller.

Hardly used you say? I like how you talk as if you got all the facts, that's an opinion, and it's wrong.

simply no :) for all various reasons listed in this thread.
a additional point for text chat ist the price, a good quality headset at least 100 $, a good wireless keyboard dont know 20 $ ?
Their is no reason to add this option dear DEVS, until you want realy that the game dies and you get a bad reputation in the community/industry, and be sure this will happen, like in FF14 a hardcrash without recovery ( only difference they survived and doing well now, cause they listened to the community, stay near the community, and improve their game so all can enjoy it )

Putting down your controller to type on a mobile device or even a keyboard, or just speak on your headset and keep playing? Seems like an easy choice. If they put a text chat in the game, and someone stops playing in the middle of a dungeon to type, I'll be removing them from the dungeon.

I do agree, a text chat would be handy, it just wouldn't be active or useful anywhere outside of a city. It can be a bit hard to chat in a city. People are talking as if a text box is life or death for this game, and that isn't the case. [Edited] By all means, I welcome any new features to any game.

Simply yes. A headset cost under $10, any phone headset will do and it is more than enough. The game will be fine with a chat box, and it will be fine without it. The devs understand, people want one. You saying "dear devs" over and over really means nothing to them. They likely won't even read the thread.

Anonymity? You're really stretching for reasons there bud. Deafness, I'll give you that. That does make sense, though no game company is ever going to put in features because maybe 10% of the players can't hear. If you think Voicechat is bad for "issues" you've clearly never seen the text chat of any MMO.

Still not disagreeing the game could use a text chat, but I'm not going to try and make up reasons for it. It could just use it, simple.

Some people arent a fan of having others know their Age or Gender in a online environment, i have played many MMO's including 2 on Console FF14ARR and DCUO Both have active chat boxs and yes there are issues with people been abusive and generally a pain but you get that with VoiP aswell atleast with a chat box you can Block people.

Another player came and said nasty things about my female character. It's a bit more disturbing when you can actually hear it and not just something you read in the chat.

But this is just an example. There are all sorts of unpleasant things you can hear ingame.

Please z-max hear my desperate plea: dont do it, dont cave in to the "We must have this and that"-guys. they are a minority of vocal forum posters thats all. Most people are fine playing the game and love the absence of text chat.

I'm bored today, not much on :)

I've gone through the past few days worth of posts on the subject. I have ignored well over 30 people that sort of imply they would like chat but haven't really made it clear, I've also ignored all those that make it totally clear they are PC only and are just joining in for whatever reason.

I've only counted people that actually posted.

I've done my best not to warp or deliberately sway the result to my view.

I realize there was a vote just after console release in a thread that got closed, in that vote, 190 wanted text chat and 71 didn't. However, I've only counted people who actually have actually posted in threads as for all we know, many that voted yes or no aren't even on the console.

    My findings are:

    135 people want text chat
    28 do not.

Sure there are a few from both camps who spend a lot of time arguing their points on here, but many are simply new forum members making one or two posts on the subject.

I also appreciate this forum is not the majority of players. However, usually you can gauge by the number of individual (and new) posters the average feeling of players.

As for the minority being vocal, while I have been reasonably vocal on the matter and while some others have also been very vocal on it, I don't think anyone has been more vocal than 3 or 4 of you from the no camp in all these threads.

Here's a list of the 28 players that I found that said they didn't want tect chat (note, this isn't naming and shaming, it's info on this very forum section)

and of course I haven't read every thread (but I haven't deliberately not read a particular thread in order to sway the result either)

I appreciate that for some people, the style they play in, no text works for them, but everyone plays differently and for many, text chat simply is a necessity. Bearing in mind on the PS4 EU now, almost no one is speaking on mics outside of guild/groups, we have zero way of communicating at present.

No thanks, chat is fine as it is and if need ppl .. there is plenty of others in FB groups, twitter etc that can be asked.
ZoS please understand everyone thinks and pronounces things differently, so please add to your 'rules' that things get removed if the Mod doesn't actually quite understand phrasing

as a player from PC Release, i am finding it very difficult to adapt to no text, but also, finding it really aggravating when people run past with there music really load and distorted in my ear, babys crying, partners shouting etc. so most of the time i mute it any way. please ad a text box!!!!!
