Because it would be like stepping back 10 years of evolvement and only cater to those who dont want to listen to instructions.

I can't speak for everyone, but I know in my case it has nothing to do with not wanting to listen to instructions. The sole reason I turn off voice chat is because I can't stand listening to background noise that has nothing to do with the game. Someone chewing potato chips in their mic, significant other yelling in the background, TV or music blasting...it all entirely breaks immersion in the game. I also think it is discriminatory (on the part of ZOS) toward individuals that are hard of hearing to exclude a basic feature like text chat.

As for stepping back 10 years...I can see your point to an extent. If this were a FPS or Action Adventure game we were talking about, I would even 100% agree with you. The thing is, this is an MMO and text chat has been a staple in almost every single one with the possible exception of Destiny (which I don't really consider an MMO).

You guys are stuck in the past, thats whats wrong with this whole discussion.
I will never understand why some individuals decide to row against the stream heading upwards it in the wrong way in a race like this. Just follow the leader down the stream to the goal and you´ll be fine. Trust in the evolvement of things, its usually for the best.

There you go again thinking you know what's right, and what the future holds, and everybody else's opinion is irrelevant or wrong.

My console version came without text, I chose to buy it without text.

Now, if someone is killing their spouse or getting beat in the head with a roller pin by their mommy <<(U know wat I'm sayin) on VC that came with the game, I'll mute em. I'm not asking, begging, throwing tantrums for them to make me a whole new 'samitch', I'm using the features that are already in the version I bought...... which are VC and mute just to name a few.

Idea, how about another poll!!! There's only been 4-5 about text..so why not go for more lmao B)

    You can't mute individuals. Checkmate.

let raash simply in his own little world, text chat has so many benefits to socialize in the game ( whats missing right now ) that are all listed in this thread, and he cant deny them, its impossible to deny them xD

Lets get back to topic :D

Text chat is needet for easier communication with more than 4 people at the same time and a history if you go afk and can read up what was going on.
Building groups easier/trades/not to have wear a headset all the time/pvp coordination/personal preference ( some people arent in the mood to talk sometimes )/guild recruitment/general socializing/more feel of a multiplayer game ( for what it was adervertised) and so on xD

If something was missing pls add it, need to keep this thread keep going until a final response comes from the devs so we know whats going on^^

It's clear the people who don't want text chat will sit in party chat on the xbox or ps4.

They don't care about the community in game. They don't use in game voice chat. If they do it's limited to guild at best and perhaps they run with several friends anyway, so therefore don't need to communicate with others outside of their clique.

For everyone else - we need some form of text - the game feels like no-one is around sometimes, anchors, group bosses etc i've had to solo them...as a tank, because there isn't anyone close by. - Should be fun to do them in groups, not a ballache on ya own.

Group finder works, but people aren't teleported to the dungeon and take 20 minutes to realise - you go on voice to tell them and they don't respond because they are not even in the voice channels. lol.

After 6 days now from release, me playing every night, I can say I have talk to ZERO people. There are plenty of people around me, but literally no one is talking. Save for the one time I was picking a treasure chest lock in a house, heard a sword clangie sound, then heard someone scream an F-word obscenity at the top of his lungs, then saw him proceed to run away while 6 or so guards were chasing him.

    That was funny.

Still, the simple fact that I have had zero conversations with people in the 6 days since launch shows how timid/shy people are being with the voice chat mandatory thing. If we still had text chat, I'm sure I'd have talked to a number of people by now.

I'd like to add my voice to supporting the addition of Text chat to the console version of the game. My opinion, based upon my experiences, is that voice chat is not sufficient as the only means of communication.

This is coming from someone who has had to deal with VC only in a guild with over 100 members (too say it can get chaotic to the point of distraction) is an understatement. I also have been immediately removing myself from area chat the second I get in game; this of course avoids the annoying broadcasts from randoms (which I have experienced), but also leaves 0 methods to really communicate with these players (the canned text phrases do not suffice).

The removal of text chat is honestly one of the weirdest decisions I think ZOS has made with this game; and it is my belief they should reverse course on that decision as soon as possible. Lack of text chat's perceived benefits do not outweigh the costs for the people who would use the feature (especially if the users can turn off the text chat if they don't want to use the feature).

I got a guild close to 150 people now with some v14 players. Please tell me a faster way to chat and ask these folks for dungeons? No one is ever in guild chat in all my guilds. Please be reasonable and add a little chat box. Should you be in the A.D. Alliance and have vet character message me gamertag is gravebelly I will add you to my friendlist. This is so inconvenient that I think if chat is not added it could possibly break the console. Many people play to do dungeons, trials, and dsa. Chat would also help pvp. Many here are not asking for the game to be changed just one little feature so we all can group and have fun. It is no fun when you can't communicate to others on the fly.

I value my eardrums and my speakers so I keep open voice chat muted. There is no other real means to meet random people and the people who are so extraverted so as to just run around talking are pretty rare.

My first login today put me in the bank with one other person who was just talking. They were narrating their every bank action and cursing items they didn't need "F*** YOU STAMINA RUNE I DON'T NEED YOU" etc.. I sat listening to him for several minutes entirely out of morbid curiosity. Eventually he got done with his banking and left, and continued to narrate everything he was doing, about how he was going to go craft health runes, it was like I was reading his inner monologue or something.

That said, I find fewer and fewer people using the voice chat.

I figure if we keep posting about the topic here, and encourage people who are just leaving chat as soon as they log in to continue doing so, maybe they'll listen.

I know I"m not spending another dime on the game until text chat becomes available. I keep considering subbing ESO+ but I am not going to support this treatment. I won't be spending another dime until text chat is available. That's a language ZoS understands.

Do we have any knowledge of the how many console players are going to go out and buy/use an existing keyboard for text chat? I only ask because, I personally feel like the average console player is underrepresented on these forums because, well we're casual console players. We don't forum lol. The addition of an optional text chat box would be nice for those who want it. However, taking into account the entire console player base, I'm not convinced text chat will have a big impact fixing the perceived social problems for a large numbers of players. Between guys like me who are going to turn it off, others who may have it on but won't ever use it, I'm not sure it fixes the perceived grouping and trading problems.

I'm all for adding text chat for those who want it(provided I can turn it off). It will help those who don't have a means to communicate. However, because voice chat is in the game, I do not believe us casual console players will be encouraged at all to interact with the text chat. Therefore I feel the text chat may be filled with a small portion of players throughout the day and detract further from the players who may have at least left voice chat on because they originally had no other form of (easily accesible) communication.

Once again I'm completely fine with a text chat box that can be toggled. But, keeping in mind what I believe to be the demographic of the playerbase, while acknowledging the platform and accessibility of voip, I feel the text chat would do no more then be another option of communication. This makes it good for those who can't use voip, but I do not believe it solves the perceived social issues.

*You guys really shouldn't feed the trolls. Granted I only read the first 3 pages and the last page but, I feel like it was really obvious these guys were just messing with you lol. "My legally blind friend". I chuckled.

Please give me proof that console would not thrive with chat. A keyboard now is easier to find then last year's phone charger.
  • fusionyugib14_ESO
As I believe it if they know what they are getting is an MMO they will have a keyboard ready for it. USB Keyboards aren't exactly expensive and nearly as cheap as getting a decent headset. No one I know who played FFXI or FFXIV on a console ever complained about needing a keyboard to communicate.

There is precedence for console players using USB Keyboards (or keypads) on a large scale; one simply needs to look at the FFXIV:ARR console players.

I played on PS3 and PS4 in FFXIV:ARR, using a keyboard the entire time. In my experience in that game, the majority of console players which I met also were using keyboards; if a player did not have a keyboard, everyone would suggest they pick up an inexpensive keyboard to use for the game, often times, these players would.

In FFXIV:ARR it seemed like the most common control configuration was controller + keyboard, across all systems, PS3, PS4 and PC.

Also, whether everyone uses it our not is not the point. The point is it would be there for those that do use it. Also, in my experience, people are less tolerant of voice comms (meaning they have a lower thresh hold to just abandon the medium in general, as I have already done with Area chat) then they are with text chat. Meaning text chat will more the likely have a larger audience among randoms then voice comms only.

Finally, gamers, even casual, aren't stupid; they will use the most effective means to communicate they have available. Matter of fact, I resent the concept that console gamers aren't savvy enough to use a keyboard, or wouldn't realize the scenarios in which text chat is the obviously more efficient method of communication, and use it appropriately. This casual console gamer stereotype is outdated and needs to be phased out, starting with ZOS' spin response to not pursuing text chat after promising it to the console players.

Based on that idea if there is ever any DLC then you should make sure not to get it because didn't come with your version of the game, it is an add-on. People just want an add-on chat box cause that is the only way we would get it. Also it wouldn't be typing that was getting your group mad at you, but instead of typing on the forums and not paying any attention to the game.

I've commented before that most people already own a keyboard, case in point, you've typed this post.

Further, if you'd like an example of console players using keyboards, log into DCUO or Warframe, they're both free and have keyboard support and text chat. Their communities are active and thriving within that chat. You'd not be inconvenienced beyond maybe toggling the chat off, and if you ever had need to ask a simple question, it'd be there for you too.

But again, take a look at other console MMO's and you'll have a pretty solid answer.

yeah look at FF14 for example, its almost a 1 on 1 port from PC to console with perfectly adjusted UI on consoles. If they can do that Zeni can too :D and the playerbase is increasing fastly on console for FF14 with the add on next week released.

the average console player to take that point, the real average, doesnt even have a headset or a keyboard :p but i can tell you its realy comfortable to chat with a wireless keayboard on the couch, do it all the time in FF14. And about the benefits of a text chat i guess we dont need to talk, they are obvious and not denyable :) Its just an good addition to the voice chat, that will still be used.

@King Bozo The chat box will do nothing but help eso on console. I just don't believe it will help to the degree of "Chat box will save eso on console"(slightly paraphrased but that's in the first 3 pages somewhere) which is the point I was trying to make. I'm mentioning this because in the posts I read people are seeing it as a be all end all and I hardly believe that to be the case. Text chat won't make or break the game.

@Merkabeh Never said consoles players were incapable of using keyboards.

Of course everyone doesn't have to use the chat box. Hence why I said "Once again I'm completely fine with a text chat box that can be toggled." Now as far as abandoning the medium of voice chat, I'd like to hear that from someone who hasn't played too many mmos, especially an mmo on ps4 with a keyboard so it's a completely natural thing for you lol. I played Tera up to about lvl 40 for awhile. Would I have added voip? Probably not, didn't need it. Would I whip out a keyboard for eso? Probably not, don't need it. Text chat would be a nice feature for those who want it. Won't make or break the game.

@Amiculi Um...I'm using my laptop lol? Beyond that I also mentioned people could use one they already owned in the first sentence.

I did not imply at all that an mmo would thrive or die with a chat box. In fact if looking at reasons for an mmo being good or bad, i feel like the chat box tends to not find itself as a topic of the conversation. Which is the point I was trying to get across.

I've played dcuo, a good amount of hours between 4 different characters that I never got past 24 because the game did not interest me beyond the "wow it's batman" aspect. Disregarding my experience with my highest level character which was on pc, chatbox was nowhere near as active as what I saw in something like Tera or this very small game known as Face of mankind which never had more than 500 active players on at one time. Chat box could be a nice feature to add. Probably should add it as there is just enough demand to justify it. Won't make or break the game.

@Germal Every single Ps4 player was provided with a microphone that picks up sound pretty well (caught me off guard to be honest lol). Now I'm not saying you have to use a microphone. Nor am I saying you should not be allowed to use text-based communication. Simply saying voip is a viable option in terms of accessibility for ps4 players without any physical, mental or social disabilities. Of course if you want an optional text chat you should have it. Won't make or break the game.

And in case I wasn't clear I'm okay with an optional chat box that I can remove completely from my sight. I just don't think it's that big of a deal in terms of the ability to connect socially.

No one wants to get rid of the voice chat, Stop acting like we are. my main concern with only having Voip communication is its very limiting and you can argue all day long until your blue in the face but a fact is a fact. that been said it also Surpasses Text based chat in certain situations Such as dungoens, raids ect. Where Voip Falls short Text chat Surpasses it Looking for group, Looking for trade, General chat in towns, Asking questions or looking for help And organizing and coordinating PvP Events There are many more examples for both Chat Features. What im trying to get at is one compliments the other.

I dont understand why some of you are saying adding in a text box would ruin your game because no one would talk to you. we are already not talking to you haha its not gonna change some people simply cant use Voice chat because of hearing impairments others have Social Anxiety's and would just rather type and some people dont want to reveal their Age/Gender to other players.

I know am on PC but I remember Asheron's Call release had no chat for like 2 weeks I think it was. Now am not a big talker in games, never have been but at times you just need to ask a question. While that chat was down it was really hard to play the game. Granted that was years before headsets in games. Think team speak may not have even been made yet.

Thing am getting at I just can't see playing an MMO with no text chat. To me it just wouldn't be an MMO but a single player game. Maybe am wrong just seems weird to me that it does not have it!
