I agree with Nox over there, this situation is telling new players that they will be trashed like us in the future.

It really blows my mind. It's a virtual pet. You are not entitled to every stupid promotional vanity item they release. It has no effect on your gameplay. For the love of god, they even folded and offered to provide a brown dog at a later date, and you are still crying and stomping your feet.
There is just no reasoning with some people.Logic is lost here.
It does hinder some peoples game play, when they are collectors and have participated in beta etc. and expect to be able to collect every pet in the game if they have an opportunity to do so. The only option to get this pet is to start completely over. It may not make sense to you but, a lot of people feel this way.

It doesn't. You didn't have a dog before, you don't now. Nothing has changed. Other people getting a vanity pet that does not affect you in anyway does not hinder your gameplay.
This is all envy based. If player b gets to have something, player a assumes he is entitled to the same thing. But that is simply not the case. Promotional sales happen all the time, and I have never seen people so furious over one.
I get that you like dogs, me too, personally I wouldn't use the pet if I had it, I have a suspicion it will become the most common of the pets, at least for a short time.
Getting filled with genuine outrage over this is ridiculous though. It's petty.

So in truth, your video is actually working against you in showing that just one bank out of the several of thousands thought it was a unique idea to exploit.
Nice try though.

Exactly, I do NOT have a dog now. Other players do. And the players that were subscribed before the sale did not have an equal chance to get the pet. I am willing to buy the steam product, but I still do not get the pet. That is bad business.
The quakecon pig is completely different, I did not go to quakecon so I do not have a pig. I had an equal chance to go though, just like everyone else. So the pig does not bother me. I also can get it off ebay.
No other MMO that has pets the I have experienced has done something like this before. They all give players a way to get the pets. Even if that involves traveling.

It's not about exclusive deals, it's about the desirability of the item. Giving a dog before relsasing other pets that we've been asking for, that's the issue. I don't care if steam users get discounts and other junk that no one cares about, but many current players asked for a dog and they were ignored.

EQ has, in the past, given promotional items to new players. I was not able to get these items. I also missed out on items that were passed around while I was inactive (despite playing since 1999.) Anytime a game is released on Steam, there is a promotion that is Steam exclusive. I suspect they require it, or at least heavily request it.
At a later date, a dog will be offered that you can get in on. Just be patient. Being angry that another player got something you didn't, when you had the advantage of the explorer's pack (any race any faction is awesome, I have no idea why people find this useless), possibly a monkey if you beta tested, and a ton of playtime to get established that they didn't. When you bought the game, this is what was sold to you. ZOS is not obligated to never change that ever.
I could understand people complaining a bit and being miffed over the whole thing, but the level of anger is way over the top.

It's still being debated because people like you come in and don't bother to read what others are posting. You simply come in and post to get attention without making any attempt to understand the debate from the other side of the line.
Think I'm just going to include my last post in all of my new posts, just so guys like you have no real excuse not to have seen it other than pure ignorance. Just click to view the spoiler...Take your own advice. True, some sound like spoiled brats asking for a free handout, but others aren't asking for free handouts, they're simply outraged by the way Zenimax handled this whole event, and justifiably if you look at the whole scenario without focusing on the dog factor. Lets take a look at it and we'll even avoid the phrase "dog".
1) Zenimax justifies the use of a p2p system by stating that "players will have access to all content". Vanity content is still content, stating that there will be no exclusive content and then adding exclusive content makes you a liar.
2) Veteran players have been asking for a specific item since beta, and Zenimax finally delivers on that item. The problem is, Zenimax only gives said item to new players and tells veteran players they will never be allowed to have the item.
3) Many veteran players simply want Steam access, they don't care about the other bonus item. However, the way Steam support for this game has been handled, new players are allowed to get the benefits of having the game on Steam while veteran players have been told they never will.
4) Zenimax chose to announce the release of similar items, but waited so long to announce this and when they did decided that vagueness was the best way to handle the situation. From their response about the similar item, for all we know, it will be a part of the next Steam promotion and all players considered veteran will not have access to it either.
5) Zenimax's market department has demonstrated very bad judgement by doing what so many consider to be giving the finger to the player base who has stood by them through thick and thin. They have made the statement that, in regards to ESO, it would have been better to wait the three months and buy the game so you could get the Steam support and free vanity items. Naturally, in the process of doing so, they have shunned the very players who have defended them while many big name media companies bad mouthed them.
6) Many would argue that beta testers had access to two exclusive pets, but new players can get these pets simply by turning to outside vendors and thus, new players have access to everything veteran players have and more while, and I hate repeating myself, veteran players will not be allowed to get the Steam support or vanity pet that new players have.
I've been one of the many people who defended Zenimax against the naysayers, but the way this whole event was handled has demonstrated that Zenimax does not care about their loyal fans. I've defended the game despite all the bugs, though I have done my share of in game complaining about them, and I've defended
Zenimax against all those out there who compare ESO to WoW or EQ. Sorry to say I will not be doing this anymore, as they've clearly demonstrated that they care far more about bringing in potential customers then they do about keeping their supportive ones. Granted, I will still be playing, so Zenimax will still be happy since they will still be getting my sub fee, but I'll be tipping my glass to them for every potential customer I cost them by not defending them when I hear people bashing them in forums and such.
We've offered up facts to support our side of the debate, so now, where are yours? Outside of the usual "my opinion is fact" arguement we keep seeing out of the people on your side, I've yet to see a single person show any unbiased facts to counter those I've posted. The reason this debate is still going is because guys like you get on and post your opinions without reading anyone else's posts, much less even attempting to understand the debate from their side of the line. You offer up your opinion as if it's the only one that matters, and often in a matter of fact manner that my seven year old nephew uses when he "knows" he's right despite so much proof against him.

You know what? What is important to you though may not be important to someone else. You want a dog. I have seen many on here asking for a cat. This is a slippery slope ZoS has gone down because you can't please everyone. As soon as some people get their damn dog, you will find people throwing a fit that they didn't want a dog, but a cat.

EQ had less competition and the subcription model was pretty much the standard at that time; It was a different environment to what we have now, where the subcription model is often seen as greedy and outdated - not that I agree but it is a common perception and one that any game company launching a subscription based game in 2014 has to take into account.
As to Steam, plenty of titles on Steam come without exclusive bonuses and it is in no way required. Whether they suggest publishers might want to look at that type of promotion I don't know. But let's not get the notion in our heads that this is in someway Steam's responsibility, this decision was firmly made by ZOS/Bethesda and no one else.
"a ton of playtime to get established" = putting up with the worst of the bugs. Yes, we've been able to play for the last 3 1/2 months (as could anyone who bothered to buy a copy of the game and subscribe) but it has been annoying at times.
"When you bought the game, this is what was sold to you. ZOS is not obligated to never change that ever." Maybe not but I would hope subscriber retention would be part of ZOS' strategy.
Fair enough, I've only seen one person outright say this was the last straw for them and that they intended to unsubscribe.
However, depending on other things ZOS might do in the future something like this, even subconsciously, could factor in one day when someone is making a decision about whether to continue with the game or not.
I'm not angry about not getting the dog. I'm more frustrated with how easily this could have been avoided.
I honestly think someone made a bad call with this; Naturally, this leads me to wonder what other bad decisions ZOS might make.
I'm also frustrated at why people think it would have been a bad thing for ZOS to just simply give the dog to existing subscribers at the same time as they launched on Steam because I don't think those people would have been posting since to lament how unfair it was to new players that they didn't get given an exclusive item.
Yes, somebody would have found something to complain about it, because videogames, but I don't think they would have found much support at all for complaining about ZOS giving us this item.

Dont forget the pig.
Still , that is some dedication on a losing battle , there is nothing holding zen from doing this same thing again and again.
What will you do next time they decide to launch a pet only for new players that you cant hope to get on your current acc , start again?
Yet again, @smeeprocketnub19_ESO, you're making the debate about the dog and choosing to ignore the facts by dismissing them simply because you do not agree with them. I'll state it again, I'll give you more credit as a vayable debate opponent if you would offer even one shred of proof for anything that you're stating. Literally all you have done this entire debate is quote other people and give your two cents without offering anything to support your own argument. It's completely obvious at this point that you're just barking to hear yourself bark, but then again, I'm talking to a guy who has "peems" in his name, so yeah... I don't expect much else, lol.

Many pigs on ebay right now. And I really wont start over, but I'm OCD this way about collecting every pet, so it sucks for me.
also I already bought it on steam cause I thought I would get game time/dog. (stupid me)
