But, you think zos IS telling you how to play?

Yes. I run a trading guild - that means 30 sets of daily writs across 2 accounts to barely have enough gold to run my guild.
I'd like to note that none of the Tome Challenges reward daily crafting writs.

I'd also love to be doing housing more - again not rewarded by any current "challenge".

I'd love to have more officers in my guild to help out - but no one is even willing to give 1 hour a week to the guild. I've been asking for years. While my current officers are leaving the game.

So yes, ZOS IS telling me how to play. The Tomes and Pursuits funnel your play to certain activities - this is one way all MMOs direct play.

Don't tell me to re-roll Tome Challenges - I do, and get the same or similar challenges 3-5x IN A ROW. Good for you people who get different things, I do not, on either account.

To offer a potential fix that fits with your playstyle, have you tried running around Solstice with zone chat and doing the dailies?

    1. Motifs that drop from the daily coffers in the new zone can be worth quite a bit of gold. With the furnishing plan CP you have a chance to get two in a box. This would help subsidize your trade guild
    2. Grouped worldbossing are three of the pursuit achievements
    3. Killing bosses at incursions and in grouped WB groups puts progress toward your tome & pursuit
    4. Because you're in a group you'll get credit for other people's damage. You can show up naked and punch the boss and it'll count towards completion. I've done this on baby toons.

In the most earnest way I think you could probably be playing in a way that benefits all your interests at once. (Edited for spelling)

I'm not doing the Golden Pursuit, but I feel ZOS has made the game an endless tutorial. Let's have an event that rewards doing dailies and ntroduce tomes that don't seem (disclaimer I haven't seen every chore available) to reward quests or crafting.

And seasonal chores are fine, but apparently they may be available for 3 months, but more grind is coming!

I think something that will help many players is coming to realize that the Season/Tomes aren't Events requiring focus and needs to "be played". It's simply a structured system running in the background that will progress naturally, dropping rewards along the way. Once this is recognized, the burnoout/stress should go down. Players will come to realize that there's no need to fear missing out in regards to the tome rewards, and in future seasons will likely set a pace more suited to their needs and desires.

There are/will be more than enough points to go around, and it won't be long before forum posts start to appear addressing the surplus of tome points and wondering why there's nothing to more to spend them on.

    • Do we have too much currency now? Yes, we do.
    • Do we have too many things to do? Yes, we do.
    • Do we have more places to get different rewards? Yes, we do.

But here’s the thing: we don’t have to do everything. We can skip what we don’t care about.

Seriously, it’s a good thing for the game to have more content than we can handle. That’s how you get diversity. Some players enjoy one type of content, others prefer something else, some don’t like any of it, and some enjoy everything. That’s fine.

ESO gives us things to do in the game. Whether the rewards are good or bad, it’s still better than just paying for loot boxes. That’s healthy for the game. Don’t have time to do everything? Then just do what you can.

I’m not saying I love everything in the game. In fact, I really dislike all the nonsense around Subclassing, DPS chasing, logs, gatekeeping, toxicity, and all that. But I genuinely appreciate that ZoS keeps giving players things to do.

Let’s recognize that this is good for the game. None of this content is hurting anyone’s gameplay. Instead of complaining about having options, let’s focus on pushing for the changes that actually matter.

Yes! There needs to be more content, regardless of what it is. Too much is better than not enough. I like that they are offering more and I like that we have choices to make instead of being forced to farm. No one should be able to farm the game to obtain everything in a short period. We should actually have to play content to do so and make clear decisions about what it is we want to do.

Preface: I need to get this off my chest. Please don't tell me how to play,

As if killing 1000 enemies plus 100 bosses wasn't enough to keep up with, now there's a short term Golden Pursuit. No, neither of those things fit in MY normal play schedule.

Can we have some down time? When I can choose what **I** want to do?

Can we just have some time with only 1 thing? Not constant new quests. new zones. etc? (while older zones remain bugged)

I am so burnt out on the game already, please ZOS, just let us PLAY sometimes!

I know it's not exactly what you're saying, but I do agree with the sentiment. Personally I think having only weekly challenges with large numbers that require me to manage chunking them out with no rewards until the end of the process, combined with the fact that the Tomes seem to have even less items available that align with most natural gameplay, make them feel more demanding and time consuming than than the previous daily challenges. I too have most of my play time dedicated to a single type of activity (though it is different than yours) and have found that the old daily challenges of "drink two drinks" or "gather six logs" feel way more accessible on most days of play.

It doesn't matter if it's spread out over three months if the activities still require going more out of your way than the other free rewards systems did. I've been on vacation for a week and the week before I wasn't able to play and I have no idea how much that's going to impact my ability to get enough Tome Points when I don't play a lot as it is.

If the short term golden pursuit has a unique reward that's likely never to return, I find that equally annoying as I can't log in right now.

I much prefer content that does not disappear so I can just work through it when I have time, whether that's weeks or months from now. It's why I have always been a subscriber.

    So... I hear you.

I can't actually speak for the OP but I would say, for myself, it's not an issue of others getting rewards when I can't play so much as not being able to go get them later when I can play. I hate time bound stuff. Surprise XP events and quick pursuits that just reward currency are awesome... but one-time time bound content with unique collectibles.... not so much. It's no fun to see people running around with something cool and instead of knowing that you can go for the achievement or grab it when it comes around again, you look up the item and find you may have missed it forever. I'm STILL bitter that I missed claiming the free house during one of the effects because I hadn't realized ZOS switched from mail delivery to Crown Store claiming. :p

I agree that one way to handle the situation is to ignore all the stuff you don't want to do, but it's annoying how difficult the game makes it to do that.

I have multiple addons to remove or minimise unwanted notifications and pop-up text and other noise about things I'm not currently doing and even then there's a few steps to go through to clear stuff I don't want to know about so I can focus on actually playing the game. Which is especially frustrating for a game that was originally advertised as having a minimalist UI and "play the way you want" approach.

It also doesn't feel great when the choice offered is "you either do this now, on our schedule, or you don't do it at all". Yes players can make that choice, but it's very different to the system we had up until recently when the majority of things could be played on your own schedule and it was only occasional events which were time-limited.

You can learn to ignore it, you can accept you're going to miss out and that's ok, you can clear out the clutter and shut off the noise and learn to focus on what you're doing, but those are the kind of choices you make for something you have to get done, not something you're choosing (and paying) to do for fun.

So… why did you have to get all 1000 kills and 100 bosses immediately?

You have literally three months for those. Those are going to be active until a month after the next update releases. There is the opposite of a rush for those things.

You had all of that time to just play, but you chose to grind it out ASAP. There’s a difference.

The reason they’re doing a short Pursuit is that this is the “get hyped for the Night Market” one, and then we’ll get another Pursuit then dealing with the Night Market. That one will last the entire length of the Night Market, until June 17.
So if you don’t want to grind it out immediately, then don’t. You have seven weeks.

... because running around just killing things is not my normal gameplay. If I don't do it when it comes out, it won't get done.
    Sorry to be inconvenient.

This is a YOU thing, not a ZOS thing. In some ways, the game now forces people to take responsibility for their own 'enjoyment' by offering players so many options. Yet, some people would rather have less offerings because they don't want to be responsible for making decisions. IMO, more options are better than less.

Okay so let's look at this more practically. The tome challenge to kill bosses can be done at the same time as the pursuit dungeon activities. It combines perfectly. You could even do the Wrothgar dungeon and have it count towards the 1000 kills.

As for the weekly tome challenges, some can be re-rolled if necessary to get activities that also count for the pursuit. I got 3 like that this week. 3(!) re-rolled and gave me the same incursion one, but I take the fighter's guild quest and do one a day and it counts for the GP and tomes simultaneously. Anything that doesn't double up, I can skip.

The season runs for a few months, so skipping any incompatible tome challenges for a week shouldn't prevent anyone from unlocking all the gifts. Especially when you can roll activities over to the following week. Just do any challenges that are combinable and let the others roll over to next week if you don't have time.

I think it's a nice system as the GP combines well with the tome activities, just as it used to with endeavours. The rolling over is really good IMO as it gives you more flexibility than the old endeavours did.

No. They removed the daily login rewards and daily endeavors to reduce (not eliminate) FOMO. The tomes allow you to get the same rewards over the course of months on the free track (and for the lifetime of your account on the paid track). So, rather than needing to do everything right away, you can do over the course of a long time period and focus on things you'd enjoy more.

OFC some people are choosing to do it all at once instead. But that's a grind they are creating for themselves and they're actually tackling it in a way that runs counter to the recommended method of completion.

You’re not being forced to run writs to keep a guild alive.

Once upon a time, I was the GM of a trading guild, from 2015 to... 2017? no, I think it was '18? or '19? It's been so long that I don't even remember anymore. Quitting and shutting down the guild was a hard decision at the time, but looking back, it was absolutely the right decision and I've had zero regrets. Esp. seeing how much more stressful running a trade guild is these days with today's astronomical bid levels.

If the OP feels like things are resembling a job, then it's time for the OP to rethink if this is what they really want to do.

I feel you, OP. I do. Honestly, I'm starting to find the game way too overstimulating. There's a constant stream of things I have to "shoo" away because they're demanding my attention. I would rather this game feel like a single player game, which have so much less stimulation and way more immersion.

From a business perspective, I get it though. There has to be some incentive to play the game. So, I don't fault them for giving us that, but it does seem overwhelming at times.

From my perspective though, I wouldn't mind less events overall. My preference would be just having permanent reward systems that we all eventually work towards, rather than so much FOMO. Like, why can't earn Trade Bars through something like IA or dungeons?

I can get where the op is coming from, I'm not a guild leader, just one of a couple of officers. But we dedicate a lot of time to stuff for our players. It can feel overwhelming maybe once and awhile. I also understand that they changed to a battle pass because fomo works. They do these pursuits because they drive engagement. They need the game to look like the huge changes are not negatively impacting the game. I would counsel people to just try not to feel like you must do it.

I was surprised that the Golden Pursuit was only for 7 days and that the list of tasks was so short. In the past, there have been more tasks to choose from so most players could find enough tasks they enjoy (or don't mind so much) to complete it. If the GP duration was longer and there were more tasks to choose from, maybe there wouldn't be so many complaints. Also, the tasks didn't seem suited to the timeframe. You don't need to do the 12 dungeons grouped task, but if you want to because you don't like the other options, you'd need to do 2 dungeons a day. They never had that with endeavors or anything else, and that task is on top of weekly and seasonal challenges.

Anyway, it's interesting that ZOS said they'd heard us and understand that we want ESO to feel less like a list of chores we have to complete, so they're changing that.

Newsflash: Yes, they changed it. It's worse now lol. Tomes, big seasonal challenges, GPs, all at the same time.

Hopefully when season 1 lands with some new story content and other features, the game will feel less like a giant chore list and more like a game.

Yes, it's all optional, but most players like to earn shinies and it can be difficult to ignore this type of stuff in a game short of quitting the game altogether, because you're constantly seeing it in the UI. I mean, if there's something you want on page 10 of a tome, you pretty much have to grind for at least a month, maybe more. What fun!

There’s another level of devious here.

The complaint is “I feel compelled to do everything but I am burnt out.” Essentially, the complaint is to have a period where special rewards are not offered. But… if you don’t do the tasks, do already don’t get the rewards. But that’s not enough to just ignore the tasks and rewards; no, nobody should have rewards.

So it really looks like “I don’t want other people to get rewards because I personally am burnt out.”

ESO is an MMO, which means they want you to have lots to do. Nothing to do means dead game. It’s up to us to not make it a job.

And if it does feel like a job? Stop. You’re not being forced to play. You’re not being forced to run writs to keep a guild alive. If you are not having fun managing your guild and it leaves you no time for anything else and all of your officers are leaving and nobody from the guild is pitching in… then maybe consider folding the guild. If people wanted the guild active, they’d help run it. And you deserve to do what you want to.

I think one of the underlying issues with golden pursuits is that the game makes them hard to ignore.

There is a timer, the objectives keep auto pinning them in your quest tracker, its on the announcement screen.

Even once you get them done they are still annoying.
