Pete Hines being there was a certain indicator that things didn't go according to plan.

Indeed, Pete was menacing. Next time they announce P2W, they should bring in Darth Vader to ESO live to make it look more civil and casual.

I don't know how much influence he had on specific decisions, so it's impossible to tell if this will be good or bad for ESO in the future. But I think I will miss him. He was the face of ESO since the beginning.

If anything, it would mean we may see the user interface options and community features of the game expanded and fixed, which would only be a good thing for the game in the long run. He was a staunch opponent regarding those concerns.

Could be the best thing to happen for the game. Hopefully whoever takes over as "Creative Director" is actually creative.

I'm hoping for a little less "creativity" and a little more comon sense.

Like on his first day, he comes on the forums and realizes "Hey all our fans and customers are asking for standard basic MMO features like Minimaps, Text Chat, Damage Numbers and Buff Indicators... wait why aren't these in the game already?"

    :)

Don't forget nameplates! Those were creatively directed out of the game during beta (last seen early 2013).

I want to note that Pete Hines being present at the Tamriel Unlimited annoucement is not that strange, considering his job as head honcho of PR and Marketing.

I mean, I would call in the help of a professional if I had to market that ***.

People change jobs. That's life. However, Paul, Nick and Maria has been very focused devs to us through media.
How does the team look now? Any plans changed? Maybe hired some new hotshot devs?

Tell us to take it easy, or anything? What's the plan? :)

There has NEVER been a plan (at least a good one) with this game.

It's history has mostly consisted of lurching from one disaster to another.

Looks like Rich Lambert is now Creative Director after Paul Sage left

    Awesome.

He was the Lead Content Designer for ESO. His job was to lead the creative development of zones, dungeons, trials, etc.
There was some hubub going between ZOS and Bethsoft. Pete Hines being there was a certain indicator that things didn't go according to plan

Don't read more into Pete Hines being there than might be the case. Pete Hines is the spokesman for the publisher and it is part of his job to be there for major announcements like Tamriel Unlimited. I would have been more concerned if he had phoned it in, not showed up, or delegated to an underling.

Paul Sage might be someone who likes to move around. He was not with ESO to start, but came in mid-development. He may be the type that likes to have a big job to do and really does not like diving into the endless fine tuning. I have worked with people like this.

I am wondering who was Creative Director before him.

I hope not. I just had this conversation with my husband, I came to ESO for a MMO. While loving the TES line it was the MMO experience I was after. We played LOTRO after vanilla, after turbine took over and the store ....and still LOVED it, even though there are many, many players that hated it from the point we played.

I don't think ESO is "unsalvageable" I think it just needs more options.

Turbine always ran LOTRO from day one. Also DDO as well.

I for one would like some clarification of who is stearing the ship and a road map of where it's going.

I pre-purchased the imperial edition and my sub has never lapsed. I've even purchased extra Crowns more out of support for the game, than any need. I've understood from the beginning that the successful launch of console was key to the game's long term health and success and weathered the content drought with everyone else.

Nowadays a game is more than pixels, it's the relationship between the senior team and it's player base and a certain level of transparency is necessary for continued loyalty.

I think it's well past time for a new "The Road Ahead" article.

There were cetainly far better community relations and a better flow of information in LOTRO when the EU servers were run by Codies. There was nothing short of a hostile atmosphere when the community was managed by Turbine directly (and via a quite unpopular community manager).

The rot really started when Turbine were bought out by WB.

I agree with the overall sentiment :). It's a business transaction, but there's more to it than that for a hobby like playing an MMORPG extensively. I have a hunch we'll be hearing something next week regarding the Imperial City and overall battle plan, but that is purely speculation on my part. I haven't yet spent any crowns, although I have quite a number from the payment model conversion. I plan on using some of them on the Frost Stallion as soon as it's available, but I wouldn't if I didn't already have them otherwise until we heard a little more news. Overall, once there is more of worth (in my opinion) to buy and there's a bit better of a roadmap revealed, I will and have no problem at all with buying crowns and using the ones I have now. =)
