Balreth Bugged- Cannot Contain Spirit After killing Balreth

    CONFIRMED SOLUTION:

It is confirmed the cause is the NPC getting out of combat. To get the NPC back into combat, get Balreth low, die, port out of the portal at the entrance, port back in and the NPC should be tanking Balreth or attacking him. At this point you need to kill him rather quickly spamming anything you have to kill him before the NPC stops attacking again.

I've attempted to not cast Magicka spells in hopes he would stay in combat and not restore Magicka, I've attempted not to use the Talisman, and this seems to be the only solution that works.

Further confirmation that this tactic works, although it's a major PITA if you can't burn him fast enough.

So What do i do to get beyond this quest? can CS help me?
The Champion System should have rewarded Champion Points based off of achievements and feats earned through excelling at end game content not grinding your life away vs mobs in order to stay competitive. This system is uncreative and is a great example of extremely lazy system design. Yes, you should be embarrassed

confirmed this workaround is effective. Just make sure your killing blow is going out while the mage is still casting his magic missles otherwise it's a bust
  • TatsumakiJim
He wasn't actually casting anything when I killed Balreth, but he was in a combat stance and unresponsive. But it still worked for me.

I killed him twice while the npc was attacking him but still the bug happened. I tried logging off and on by running far away which makes the npc start attacking, i tried leaving the instance and getting back in which again made the npc start attacking him, i tried dying and logging off/on and porting out and in. Still nothing...can yall fix this please.

Tried everything I saw here, nothing works for me. Kind of stuck now for hours while other people are leveling up.

edit: I made a group of 4, and killed it under 7 seconds, that did the trick for us. just press enter to chat, the /z to talk in the whole area and ask for other people to join you, you'll find 3 other people quite fast.

Despite some bugs I'm really enjoying this game so far. Who are we kidding, a game this big can't be perfect the first day.

Weirdly, I had to defeat him a second time (another bug I guess) but it isn't still working.... Balreth's soul doesn't appear

Same issue here. Trying (again) to wait the 10 minutes and going back in

I'm having the same issue here. I tried the suggested workaround involing the NPC that leaves combat, but it didn't work. Any ETA on a fix?

Ok if you encounter the bug here is a successful workaround. I've assisted 12 times now with this. Find someone that has not entered the portal to kill Balreth. Group them. Group two more people, bugged or not. Make sure you Are all in the same instance (travel to player). Everyone enters portal. 3 people DPS the crap out of Balreth, one person stays close to the NOC Mage. As soon as BALRETH is dead, the person next to the NPC spams E. Everyone should get credit. I have successfully helped 12 groups complete it this way. Good luck.

I just got this done. The key, as others are pointing out is to DPS him as quickly as possible. Here's how we completed it...

We got a group of 4 and ported in. We all sprinted to Balreth and used the talisman (E) on him before he got into the lava on left side. We were able to kill him before he reached the lava. The NPC helper never stopped attacking...he actually may not have fully spawned yet, but it worked. The portal at the end didn't spawn so we ended up having to wayshrine out, but credit was given to all party members.

After doing this quest 5 times, this has about been the only solution that's worked for me, and I did it solo. Stand in the spot the little light that comes off the boss goes and spam E like there's no tomorrow.

Tried this method , worked like a charm. Thanks!

My party got it to work by inviting enough people to kill him as fast as possible. This worked since the NPC did not have time to bug out. We killed him in less than 10 seconds.
  • Rifraff_ESO
I stood next to the NPC the whole time, seemed to work; keep the NPC in combat

Wow, ok, so I'm not the only one having trouble with this quest.

Earlier I fell through the ground and spent an hour floating in the sky. /stuck port to wayshrine and port to teammate didn't work. Eventually - after a hefty repair bill - I managed to get back to adventuring after finding a workaround. Half an hour later: I can't contain Balreth's spirit. I've now spent over an hour googling and attempting workarounds.

It wouldn't bother me that much if this was a little side quest, but it's not. It's part of the main questline through Stonefells and it's seriously ruining my experience.

e: Balreth just respawned while I was waiting inside the instance. I killed him again (for the fourth time) but still the same issue.

e2: Attempt number six: success! I joined a group for this one. Damned if I know what we did different.

Okay I had the same bug, can't contain his spirit. I tried couple of times abandoning the quest, re-logging, resetting, nothing worked. I killed him by stunning him with the stone and never letting him enter the pools of lava that heal him. On my last try I dodged his attacks and let him enter the pool of lava once, then I killed him and the spirit appeared and I did the quest, but then the portal was bugged as mentioned above. I just wayshrined my way out of Ash Mountain and finished the quest. I was doing it solo with Dragonknigh. I hope this helps you all.

I had posted this in another thread about this. This seemed to work for me Solo

I killed him and could not bind his spirit.
I left using the wayshrine south of the mountain to exit.
    I abandoned the quest.
    I got the quest again.
I was able to kill him
    I did NOT loot him
I was able to bind him
I was not able to exit, but used the wayshrine again and was able to complete it

The only way I got this to work after multiple attempts of abandon/wayshrine out was to watch the NPC. The moment he went out of combat, I left via the portal then would immediately go back in. If the NPC was mid battle with him I would join again killing Balreth until the NPC dropped combat. It was important to make sure the NPC was NOT out of combat when Balreth died. Then he kicked off the collecting the spirit portion of the quest. And as mentioned above I did NOT loot Balreth until spirit collection was over (just in case).

Worked. Quite hard to get him to respawn though. What I did is group with sm , enter ( Balreth would not be there) , get out, break group , reenter and Ta-DA! ( Let it be noted that I abandoned the quest every ).

It worked for me.. as soon as the NPC stoped being in combat, I took the portal out and back in, and while the NPC was fighting I took down Balreth and the quest updated as it should be.

I guess the problem is with the NPC leaving combat mode. Don't let him stop fighting!

Had the same problem. The following method worked for me:
When killing Balreth follow his soul to the impact point. (blue ghostly projectile thingy) If you are there when it lands the spirit be will revealed. Needs quick reflexes. Hope it helped.
    Portal still bugged though.

Did it with a group of 3. Further confirmation of group strategy (one person distracts the npc helper, everyone else burns the boss).
  • tgr0001_ESO
I tried the method Zythos suggested, but every time I got him down around 300 or so the NPC would bug out and quit fighting. Went out and back in 2-3 times and the same thing happened. Tried following Balreth's "soul" and that didn't do anything ether.

I tried going out and back in and now there is noone inside - no Barleth and no npc. Then abandoned and restarted the quest - again no Balreth and no npc inside.....

    Do not use the Talisman.

There's noone to use it on anymore - I abandoned and restarted the quest several times, even logged out - still the inside of the instance is empty, no Balreth, no npc.

*edit* Finally did the quest by not looting Balreth after he's dead and not letting the npc out of sight after the kill. Don't know which one of the 2 worked.
