That's a great piece of logic, kassandrathecleric. Unfortunately for Zenimax, if I don'get a Steam key, I'll just be cancelling my sub out of frustration, and they won't have to worry about losing any cut in revenue, because there will be no revenue.
Pretty easy.

Is being unable to play through Steam really that big of a dealbreaker to you? Just add ESO to your Steam library as a non-Steam game, problem solved.

*shrug* You gotta do what you gotta do. All kinds of games have gone on Steam after a time even when sold other places before. I'm feeling a bit salty about the dog they get...but that is how it is.
This is how things work. They sometimes suck or are not fair. You make your decision as you must. It isn't a deal breaker for me as it obviously is for you.

Correct. Life isn't fair. I'm just pointing out that if their logic is to prevent having their income lost, in my case, they lose more income by not giving out the key than they do by giving one out.
That is it.

It is the mentality of the company providing the service. We are customers that existed before it was placed on Steam. Steam is a community all my friends use, and it does stat tracking, has achievements, community forums, etc.
Adding a non-Steam game is not the same as a game being officially on Steam. If it was, they wouldn't add games to Steam. They'd tell you to add a non-Steam game.
So, yes. It is important to me. What's ironic is that the reason they don't give out Steam keys to people who are already loyal customers is because they will have to share future income with Valve. However, if I don't get the Steam key, there is no future income.
You may be more tolerant with this kind of behavior. I am not, and I will not support it.

Steam is basically just another place to sell the game for them. It's akin to any other third party site, in that both ZOS and the website (Steam, Greenmangaming, etc) get a cut.
For them to give you a Steam key, it's going to cost them money, as Valve expects a cut for using their product. It's not like they can just hit the 'Generate Steam Key' button and email it to you without it costing them.
My only real problem with this announcement is that Steam wasn't a choice from the beginning, as I myself would have preferred to have the game on Steam (and would have also liked the wolfhound.) However, I can see why they wouldn't just throw out Steam keys to current customers.

There's no steam integration here, they're just using steam to sell the game. What's the obsession with having a steam key?

Thanks. Good bye, subscription. Good luck with your game, and I hope you learn how to treat your customers with a bit more respect in the future.

Basically anything that gives us the short end of the stick.

I'm pretty sure there will be eventually steam trading cards :P, besides, who wouldn't like to be part of it's steam forum and artwork section of it?
(Ever since i've been playing ESO i haven't spoke to any of my steam friends, it's like i just disappeared from the platform, this is more of a personal thing really).
