haelgaan✭✭✭✭✭glad i found this thread - i was starting to worry that my eyes were going off. the text seems blurrier, and i find myself tilting my head or squinting to try to clear things up.
i'm playing at 2k native (2560x1440) and don't use scaling. anyone find a way to turn off the new font yet?2 -
Mooncake✭✭✭I find the new font rendering for lorebooks quite awful and hard to read. The old one was much easier on the eyes.
This is 1080p (sorry, no fancy UHD res for me).

Fonts are a set of mathematical formulae that describe the shape of each letter; it's something like, "we need a line of this angle here, we need a curve of that shape there, etc."
The fonts are unchanged in Update 41.
What changed is the thing that draws the text, which is the thing that takes those formulae and translates them into pixels that you can see on your screen.

eleve✭✭Hi all, we are still looking into this. If you have the ability to change resolutions on your monitor, could we get a few people to try scaling up to 1440 or 4k? Just to see if fonts look off for multiple resolutions, or if it seems like a 1080p specific issue.
I have 2 monitors, one is 2560x1440, the other 1920x1200. The following 2 pics are from the settings on the login screen on both monitors:

I am not complaining about thinner or wider. I am complaining about totally unreadable to the point of it being impossible to play the game...and just to be clear, this was all perfectly fine until the last update.6 -

For real, any update here? We identified the problem really quickly and offered solutions. Shifting the drop shadow and/or increasing its spread shouldn’t be a complicated task.3 -

in my case this is hardly the root cause.
i have just replaced 6GB VRAM 1660 Super with 16GB 4060Ti (because of local AI). NVidia drivers are the latest.
both my cards displayed the new font crippled at 1080p.

Game has become much less expensive to play here. Reading anything being an unacceptable pain -> unsubbed until it's fixed. Lapsed a few days ago, so now I even have time to spare.

There are three options in the "fix from ZOS" department.- Adjust the parameters of Slug to make it look better. Downside: I'm not sure if this is even an option; I've only very briefly skimmed the documentation, so I don't know what (if anything at all) can be adjusted in Slug to make things better.
- Use Slug for drawing things not UI-related, and use the older renderer for UI-related stuff. Downside: This sounds like it would be a pretty major change and is not something that can be realistically done in an incremental, only in a major update.
- Get rid of Slug entirely and completely revert to the old rendered. Downside: This too would be unrealistic for an incremental. And there are things that they wanted to do that caused them to switch to Slug in the first place.
In other words, I would not expect to hear anything from them about this until the Q2 update at the earliest. Since the time between Q1 and Q2 is super-short, don't be surprised if it takes them until Q3.Nightfighters ― PC/NA and PC/EU

Yes, it is still broken. No improvements have been made since the original change.2 -

✭Yep, it's still broken and I honestly think Zenimax is more likely to tell us that it's "working as intended" before anything else since peeps with super fancy monitors or whatever seem to have no issue with it.1 -

Yes, it is still broken. No improvements have been made since the original change.
Agreed. Maybe we need to start putting in bug reports again. I get the distinct impression they were hoping we’d all just get used to it and forget about it… I can forget about it when I’m reading the chat box text against a dark, shadowy background, but it’s still unreadable against a light background.3 -

Yeah, sometimes I have to move my reticle to angle the chat box over a certain color of ground or wall to make reading it easier.... that should not be a thing anyone has to do.
That’s what I do, too. I do it almost subconsciously at this point, but you’re absolutely correct, no one should have to do that. It is SO bad in Rawl’kha during daylight hours, which is my preferred location for writs.1
