And he has a girlfriend at home that he doesn't consider being his girlfriend (just looked it up: ""I don't have a romantic partner back home, but I know a girl who would get mad if she heard me say that." - or am I interpreting this wrong?). Which is weird as the rest of his lines seem to characterize him quite differently.

I always read it as being that as he had a casual sort of fling going with someone back home and hadn't really been looking into anything serious. He's spent most of his adult life travelling around sorting out business for House Silvelle and chasing his foster brother Quistley across Tamriel - not much time to really get properly involved with someone and he doesn't seem to sort to resort to brothels to scratch an itch. Probably wants to leave that life as far behind him as possible and move on. Thats my theory anyway.
I like "good" characters with principles who try to do the right thing no matter what. I'm boring that way. Bastian also likes learning, doesn't shy away from hard work, has a sense of duty, etc.
If I somehow switched places with my ESO character and had to live in the world, I'd definitely pick Bastian over everyone else.
I always thought he was making a joke reference.

What I find frustrating is that these snippets of companion dialogue are designed to give us an idea of their personalities, but sometimes they come at the oddest times, and feel out of context or even inappropriate. This line is a perfect example. It would have been more appropriate as part of romance dialogue

I assumed something along those lines, though I also think it was quite OOC for him to be so flippant about someone. And I hadn't heard of Mitch Hedberg until today.

I don't have his cds but I did like him a lot. He was so funny. ☹️

Nothing wrong with that. I voted for him too. I don't think it's boring.

I take them with me when I go on road trips. It makes the drive much more enjoyable.

Why that spite against people who have a different taste?! Mirri is my favourite, but still I wouldn't call people who don't like her oversensitive. Everyone has a different sense of humour and different likes and dislikes, plain and simple.
