Zero interest in the card game. Don't like stuff like that in general. I didn't even like Gwent in Witcher 3.

There have been various threads asking for a card game over all the time I've been playing the game and reading the forums - 3.5 years. I'm sure you can hunt them up using search.

I'm not one who has any real interest in card games, but I'm also not one to be interested much in "moar combat" etc.

There have been like thousands of threads about new skill lines and new weapons. I am sure those easily outdo those threads asking for a card game by the factor 1000.

I’m hoping there is more information coming during the announcement today as everything in this thread is underwhelming to say the least. Between the pandemic impacting work schedules and deliverables, the surprisingly small crew overall, the new Microsoft management/ownership and the likely human resource loans to Starfield, I guess we should not be surprised by the small scale of the new chapter.

There will be new information in the annoucement stream.

We know nothing really about the chapter zone itself aside from it's name and a good idea of it's location.

I just want to mention that technically speaking Tales of Tribute is complex, really complex.
Deck building is a complex system,
A new game UI, and system is technically complex. You have to write whole new game logic, and make that work in an 8 year old game, it's complex.
Having this work against both NPC's and other players is extremely complex.

This was not a quick decision to chuck in a new system, tehcnically this is really challenging to implement, I don't think this is deserving of being called small scale, in my opinion just based on that one sentence it will be technically the most complex new system they have added to the game, ever.

I mean, that just makes it even worse in my opinion. With all the features people have been requesting, the dreadful performance, and the beyond disappointing content of the last two years, THIS is what they have been pouring all of their resources in? If it is, as you say, a really complex system, that makes me very very worried for the future of ESO, being in the hands of a company that is so astronomically out of touch with both their playerbase and the feedback it gives, and what a game like this needs to grow even further. Now call me crazy, but I am very doubtful that what this game needs to grow is a god damn card game. Who the hell even asked for this? Seriously.

My theory as to what happened is that after development of Elder Scrolls Legends stopped in 2019 some of the team from that game came to ESO and worked on this system.

System desigers, UI engineers, artists etc. all need new projects to work on, and this is that for some of them.

There are only so many back- end or engine engineers at ZOS and I am sure they are working on performance, but there are people at ZOS that can't do that, it's not their job, and unless they are to be laid off due to the performance issues they are still going to need to be working on something.

I think, and hope, that the people at ZOS who are resonsible for the low level server and client arcitecture are working on performance and those qualified to so are doing this. But that a new sub- team was formed with some from ZOS and some from Elder Scrolls Legends to work on this and future systems. They will be systems designers and their whole job is to create new systems, gameplay and server engineers are probably working on performance as much as is possible.

A card mini-game itself is not that bad especially since many people have been always wanted such RP activity in taverns so ZOS have listened I guess. It can be a really interesting and fresh addition to the game if implemented properly. We will see.

But making it a main feature of the chapter is rather underwhelming, especially since it's a 3rd year in a row with rather lackluster system. On the other hand they already said, in this new-year official letter, that we shouldn't expect any game-breaking and huge systems this year. So I adjusted my expectations accordingly and thus I'm not disappointed :)

    That card game sounds awesome!!!

if it is anything like Gwent it could be really nice - I played that a lot in Witcher 3. I do as well miss a dice game like "farkle" in KCD, would love to play that with the Khajiit (even they might be cheating).

Tbh I don't know what I was expecting...
I'm not against another mini game, but card game is a weak choice for a Chapter's main feature.
Main feature should be interesting for majority of player base but card game, as well as companions is for minority + it feels like companions were abandoned. Can't even customise them.
Damn, even Scrying\Excav mini games were much better feature but still lackluster as chapter's main feature.

I'm wondering, do they even trying? I mean, card games is everwhere now, even BDO got it's card game, Lost Ark got card game...
Do they even tried to introduce something unique? And if not unique then what we need, what we asked for or some new addition to end game content? Like new BG maps or even new PvE content like idk, endless solo\party(if you want) dungeon which becomes harder and harder the further you go with leaderboards amongst same classes and good rewards(not just weps).

Such a wasted opportunity...again...and again the same content just in a different 'fancy' wrapping.

    Dissapointed, what can I say.

A good and complex cardgame also needs good balancing . Looking at the balancing in pvp and pve after more than half a decade, i wouldn't get hyped for an eso card game even if i was a card game fan. [snip]

A whole lot of people have read a single (a single!) line from the datamine or maybe even just read other people talking about it and immediately placed the card game (yes there will be one, but we dont know anything about it) at the center of the whole new chapter...

i really wish i had popcorn while reading this thread, it's amazing :D

What are you talking about, that card game was awesome!? I really hope it's as good as that, if not better. I also hope it's like a Pokemon way for collecting the cards. Go and kill mobs for that 1% chance for the card drop. They can also add them to Treasure Chests for zones that don't have special things yet such as Ancestral Motifs etc.

It's game systems like these being added to the game that drew me to this game and away from Guild Wars 2. There it's all just combat, combat, combat, story, story, story - BORING!

I love ESO, and I love deck building games. I have countless hours on both for steam. However, I can't help but feel a strong sense of disappointment with the idea of a deckbuilder being the main feature of the chapter. I was really excited to finally see something of substance.

Spellcrafting would have been unrealistically ideal, a new class would have added some flavor, even a new race could possibly open up some new builds. New weapons or skill lines, something to shake things up.

Maybe we will get class refreshes at least? As a base game upgrade? A lot of classes feel outdated and stale, and every class uses the same homogenized builds and sets. Perhaps a rework here could bring that same type of life into the game that I was hoping for.
Perhaps add an element of strategy and rotation to DPS roles (rather than the layered dots with spammables we all use), as well as class identity like Magden using frost and Magsorc using lightning. Something to make each class feel unique and distinct in their roles including different healing styles and tanking styles.

High Isle and Leyawiin is going to have very similar buildings...

Pretty much down to how much the Imperials in general have an issue with style. As the Cyrodiils are all over the place.

Yup. They suffer way too much of generic medieval-ish fantasy. They could've definitely added some more Roman/Mediterranean style to Leyawiin/Nibenay. Like mosaics and stuff.

Meh, I'll wait and see. I wasn't expecting a card game, but this datamine is literally just a text box. Who knows what it'll be like yet.

After all, I remember when Greymoor was announced and everyone was like "ugh, antiquities.." It ended up being a really fun diversion, giving us loads of motifs (even if they could give us better drop rates on those leads...), lots of lore, and came with a really useful passive to find chests. I wasn't expecting much, and I enjoyed it a lot.

I remember when "ugh, companions" hit right after Blackwood was announced. Yeah, they're dumb as rocks sometimes, but it is kinda fun to have some extra DPS on my side so I don't have to rebuild my character just to do overland quests, and allowing me to duo dungeons with a companion is a nice challenge and is really fun. I still wish they'd give me a command to place companions or have them activate things so I could clear all dungeons, but it ended up being a lot more fun than I was expecting. Pity I just have to grind the one up so I can get the one I like back out...

So I wasn't expecting this, but I'm not going to write it off. It could be just a nice diversion, or it could be something interesting. Whatever. There'll also be a trial coming so I can do things with high-level friends, and new motifs, and a new landmass, and a new story (and I bet Ancestral Breton's finally coming). I'd be getting the chapter for more than just a card game on the side.

I do notice that they are probably letting you compete against players, so this is technically PvP as well. True, it's PvP similar to how objective BGs are PvP, but it does mean that they're trying to make this for everyone. I also know that they'll probably be hesitant to make a new class since that's a lot of balancing issues with 3x5 active skills, 3 ults, and a bunch of passives, and if they release a new class without adding class change tokens or new character slots, people will riot. Yes, I'd have preferred spears, but I already know that people would be up in arms if I got that ("omg too many stam weapons! We need to regrind all the set pieces and motifs!")

The Witcher had gwent (if i remember right) and i ended up really enjoying that part of the game.

I enjoyed randomly coming across NPC's in the world who would want a game, i enjoyed gathering the cards from in game activities, theft, etc. and ended up playing it a lot and found it a fun leisure activity in a game of so much more.

I also hope they never sell cards or packs and that this isnt "only" a player vs player thing as having people in world (even adding some to the older world/dlc's) to randomly find and talk to and get asked to play a round was enjoyable (for me). Having beginner NPC's all the way to master level NPC's.

They could add cards to theft, quests, achievements, antiquities, treasure chests, all manor of places to incentivize people going into the world they built to find them... NOT sell them only on the crown store.

A card game?! We could have had a new skill, or a new class, or a new race... ZoS does never fail to disappoint. I hope the presentation proves me wrong. The last two chaters and their "signature addition" were bad enough.

The problem with adding new classes and new skills (if combat related) is re-balancing the game even more than they do every patch just to balance the skills and classes that they have. Any the vast majority of balance changes make a portion of the player base angry (nerfed!) and the people happy with changes rarely say so lol.

I wouldn't hold your breath for a new race, ever. The 10 races have been a thing since TES3 at least, not sure if they were all playable in 1 and 2.

I think I am most excited about that mount that is "native to local waters"...

I dunno. Pretty sure Legends was a commissioned game. Dire Wolf and Sparkypants are not part of the Zenimax family. Yes, game devs do tend to wander between studios, so ZOS could have picked up some of them for this project. Obtaining the IP would not be an issue, I should think.

But... I expect that this is a system the mimics a card game, not a card game embedded in an MMORPG game. Concepts might transfer, but the Legends game itself probably does not. That means that maybe the developers of Legends would only be necessary for the concepts, and any developer that worked on a card game could probably provide that. IF that knowledge is even needed. They could simply base this all on Pacrooti's card handling and take an early lunch. (<- not serious)

My expectation for a card game system in ESO is that it will not be nearly as complex as Legends was.

Not so sure how I feel about the Card Game. If its some big grind to get items like Antiquities was I am certainly not going to enjoy it. But, if its just simple like the actual card game "War" then this addition to content might not be that bad.

I am just worried that this will be arduously long grind per character like Antiquities. Also that drops of the cards will be replacing items that are already in the drop tables.

Ahh okay, that's a good point that I was un aware of.

For sure the game could not be as complex, but what they have said it will do is no easy task either.
They do have a lot of very beautiful assets to work from, and it seems like they shared assets/ artists between the teams already.
