Prohibiting names that Zenimax wants to reserve and names that are offensive is enough. Anything more is completely arbitrary and impossibly restrictive. No matter what Nintendo believes, they do not own all uses of the name "Mario" and they can't possibly sue Zenimax for a player using it.
Yes, however most of these trolls flee when faced with legal letters. Theyre hoping youre an idiot.mr_stealth_b14_ESO wrote: »Has there ever actually been a copyright/trademark suit filed over a player's character name in any game?
Well....

Yeah that made me laugh.
Personally, Id have forwarded it to SOE, got Brad to write up a mail with information to contact their legal department and then lol'd.
Guy would have run like a wuss from a letter by them.
Thing is, it's not just this one guy. Groups like RIAA, MPAA and their ilk are very, very, very trigger happy when it comes to copyright claims. There's even firms that file tons of lawsuits, but don't actually represent the people they say they do.
Then there's also cases like Marvel suing NCsoft over the ability to create characters similar to Marvel trademark characters.
That said, there is a tendency among many players to be a little "unimaginative" when it comes to creating a character. Like they're trying to figure out how many different ways they can spell Gandalf.

Marvel Comics tried to sue the devs behind City of Heroes for player generated clones of licensed characters. It later came out that some of the characters had actually been made by investigators working for Marvel's lawyers.

Yup. The really ironic part is that Marvel went with Cryptic to develop their MMO shortly after the settlement.

Are Marvel Comics and City of Heroes both super hero titles?with same style of grahics perhaps too
Even if you wanted to recreate Mario for example, you'd have a hard time
Actually makes me curious how close one can gets, not very close I think since its a total different style.

Art Vandalay from Sienfeld. Still seems a fine name that should be allowed.
But I'm more than happy for ZMO to block stupid, juvenile names en-masse though.
