I don't mind buying things outright with Crowns. It's having to buy Crown Crates that really bothers me.
It's my $50 and I want to allocate it how I see fit - not how nice Pacrooti is that day.

Whether I can buy it directly for $50 or buy enough gems to buy it for $50 makes no difference to me. The journey that my money takes, or that the item has to take in order to get to me is of no consequence. Whether it is crown store, a crate item, an achievement, event vendor item, etc. It's all the same.
Another amazing furnishing that is Crown Gems ONLY. WHY you do this to me?!

I don’t care if things are released first through Crown Crates as long as those of us who dislike that system can eventually buy them too. I hope that more will become available for Crowns, including the Murkmire plants.

Even accepting that it's OK to give people no other route than gambling for an item, what kind of furnishing is really worth $50?

That's up to the individual to decide. People will vote with their dollars. If ZOS didn't think they could make substantial money on it at that price point, they wouldn't sell it for that.
It wouldn't be worth $50 to me, but my opinion, like yours, doesn't really matter to the person who will indeed pay the asking price for it.

You hit the nail on the head with that statement. No different than using chips at a Casino in place of cash. People tend to spend more when it's indirect.
