Error 209 after patch?

The repair process will go through a loop of verify -> download -> verify until all the files are repaired. The progress bar will therefore go from 0 to 100 multiple times before it finishes. It is possible that the system will need to download large files.

Large files? Mine is now downloading a 23gb file. This is the full install, as far as I know.

We have 2 computers here both with the same problem. This is going to take a long time, and use a pretty big chunk of my monthly cap.

When I deleted the .version files, the launcher wanted me to re-install the entire game. But when I restored the .version files from my recycle bin, I was able to play the game. Though the error message still shows up.

When I get this upset I normally walk away to cool down.
And to add insult to injury its not even another person but a game launcher that worked without a problem before today patch. I deleted the files that was told to do.
I did the Support Article that was just posted.
And the game is still downloading all over again.

If this was something that we could call and Complain trust me I would of already been on the phone asking for a Manager.
Now I am going to take that walk and maybe when I get back I will be 2% done downloading the game again.
  • snakepliskin83
This is stupid. Basically you have released a patch that kills the game for many users and your only response to fixing it is to go hunt down random files and delete them or totally uninstall the game and then reinstall it?

This is crazy... Why not add a link somewhere on your website that has a direct download to the patch and allow people to manually update it? Or better yet test a patch before releasing it?

At least make an official announcement that you have an issues and apologise for it. There is hardly any official support on the support forum.

Have they ever done anything right with this game.

This is the most incompetent game company I've ever dealt with in my entire history of dealing with companies.

FFS you guys, if you delete the .version files it wants you to re-install a second copy of the game onto your computer. I realize that you have to pause the download and then hit repair, but if you don't have enough hard drive space to start it to begin with, you can never pause it.

I want to know whose genius design it was to not have a separate repair executable file, that person needs to be fired and never work in gaming again so long as they live.

I think it's completely preposterous that I have to continually delete and re-install my entire program every time you bumbling idiots release a new patch. It takes me days of real time to do that, and this will now be the third time I've had to do that.

TL;DR: I'm sick of this crap, did you all hire coders fresh out of highschool?

@ ZOS_JessicaFolsom, I just exited the game and my launcher is showing the error 209 and asking me to use the consultant.

I am on a Mac what folders should I delete?

It's ironic that an update that was meant to fix lots of progression blocking bugs has a launcher error that is preventing us from playing the update.

Also I fixed the 209 error by deleting the .version files and then running the launcher again. And then repairing. But after that's all said and done I can't log into the game. Unable to connect to server error while trying to log in..

From the article Jessica links, this appears to handle the 22gb install (I got that as well).

    Repair the Game Client

If the "Play" button reads "Install":
    1. Click the install button, and start downloading
    2. Once the download beings, shutdown the launcher
    3. Restart the launcher
    4. Expand the Game Options menu (Cog wheel located above the News Feed)
    5. It should say Updating…., under that it should say Cancel. Click Cancel
    6. The expanded tab should now change to include "Repair". Click repair, and wait for it to finish.

Do Not Delete anything. This is wrong in so many ways if you delete anything it will make you download the whole game. Bad info was giving.

If you are getting this error I would wait till they come out with a better Fix then what they have posted unless you want to download the whole game again...
Which it seems that everyone who followed the steps provided is now downloading the whole game...

Don't jump off the bridge cause we all just did wait for a real fix.

@Dahkoht‌ It would be nice if people like you could stop filling up support threads with crap like this so people could actually get a problem sorted. Posts like this serve zero purpose except to derail a thread.

Reinstalled from my discs, got another error (a different one I forgot to check), closed, waited twenty seconds, reopened, continued patching. Will report back later.

In the text file the game consultant generates, it shows the contents of your HOSTS file. What does Zenimax need to know that for?

Alright, this is very, very weird. After closing the launcher and restarting it, it said play, I went to take a shower and when I came back the play button was gone and it showed me the error again. Before I could even touch my mouse it went back to a play button, then it disappeared and the repair button showed up again. Now I'm downloading 900mb for some reason. Very confused.

So.. just in the event people aren't reading all of the forums make sure you check out possible solution http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/79631/100-fixed-tested-zenimax-s-solution-to-patch-fix-gm-posted/p1

A brief cap of the steps as posted by bookwyrm (PLEASE READ THE FULL CONTENT SO YOU DON'T MAKE A MISTAKE) Also read the full forum thread linked above for other user findings and solutions

" This worked for me also, though I had to do it several times to get it "right."
    1) Make sure you're not running the client already when you delete the files. This will screw the process up.
    2) Go to your Zenimax Online folder (default, I believe, is in Program Files (x86). Inside the Zenimax Online
folder, delete the following files: 1.Inside "Launcher" folder, delete "Bethesda.net_Launcher.version", then back out of the "Launcher" folder into the Zenimax Online folder.
2.Inside "The Elder Scrolls Online" go to the "depot" folder, delete "depot.version" and go back to "TESO" folder.
3.Go to the "game" folder and delete "game_player.version", then back out to "TESO" folder.
    4.Go to "vo_en" folder and delete "vo_en.version".
The above lists all four version files that need to be deleted, under the assumption that they are named the same as the ones in my folders. Basically, look for four ".version" files if you can't find those above.
    3) Launch your client. I had to launch mine as an administrator, but I've been having to do this since day one.
    4) WAIT. Wait for the client to fail to launch. Mine came up with an "ABORT" dialogue box. Close any dialogue box that appears and make certain the client is no longer running.
    5) Go to your recycle bin, select all four files, right-click "restore".
    6) Restart your client.

I now no longer have the "cannot determine version" error or the "repair" button on my client, and am back to "play." :) I hope the step-by-step helps. If clarification is needed, let me know.

EDIT: I noticed above that someone posted that they only needed to delete one version file (the one in the "game" folder). This may work for you too, so you may want to try that first if you don't want to hunt down the other three. Saves some steps. ;) "

Actually if you follow all the information they've given it says to stop the download after deleting the .version files and then repair. You in fact do not have to redownload the entire game again.

However it still didn't fix the error for me like I thought it did.

If you are getting error 209, please try the following:
    • First, please ensure you are accessing the game via the launcher, not the .exe file.
    • Try closing out of the launcher and re-open it, then run a repair.
    • If you try to repair and it does not work, please delete all .version files in the game's sub folders and try repair again.

That last part seemed to work for me. The repair wasnt fixing it until I deleted the .version file and it repaired it just fine after that:)

    Thanks Jessica

I had the same problem - error 209. Followed instructions about deleting .version files (found 4). Followed other instructions about cancelling update/etc. Now am stuck with a full install, as I do not get a repair option, simply install. This sucks.

If it isn't fixed in 2 hours I'll be trying this when I get home from work, and I will update to say how my experience went. Just to be clear though I read the entire thread and I could tell several people were not following the instructions clearly.

Either way though the choice is up to each individual as to how they resolve their own issues, or if they wait for Zenimax to resolve it for them. I'll post again to let everyone know how it goes for me (assuming it's not fixed by then)

This launcher thing is totally weird!

I had the 209 error when updating after the NA server went up. Clicked REPAIR, the game repaired and then got the 209 error. Shut down the launcher. Restarted launcher and got into the game.

I played an hour or so and after quitting the game my launcher again said version error.

I closed the launcher cause I had other things to do. Upon returning I restarted the launcher and the error is gone and it says PLAY. WTF?

I restored 3 of the 4 version files and the launcher didn't complain. I could log in and play. But upon exiting the game, the launcher was back to saying error 209. Seems like is no way around a full download again huh?

    INFO: THERE IS NO SOLUTION.

All of these "fixes" are just coincidences, it is fully random if the error will show up or not, you just have to restart the launcher until it gives you the play button.

Yeah I stopped the download and ran repair then it wants to download the whole game again.
I have tried every step giving it still wants me to download the whole game again...
my last step was I stopped the download and we launched it and now instead of 19gb left it is now only downloading 5 gb. I would just uninstall the whole game at this point but the uninstall option is not their anymore. just cancel repair no uninstall.

I am thinking the QA Dept dropped the ball on this last patch. and who ever made the repair tool I agree with a previous poster should be fired on the spot.
I really talked up this game to my Community and I do not even want to go on TeamSpeak to talk to them now cause man I can just already hear it... UGH

^^ Even then, just cause you see the Play button on the launcher doesn't mean you will get into the game. For my bug, I hit Play on the launcher and then nothing happens. No game launching. Bleh.

    Alright, I got it fixed.

    1.) Close the launcher

2.) Wait for it to patch.

3.) It will start downloading some 900mb

4.) The error is gone and you can play now.

EDIT: Nevermind, endless loading screen... ***.

EDIT 2: Double nevermind, it isn't endless, loaded after 10 min.
