I was playing after the patch today, shut it down. went to the store, came back and now it wants a repair. Which I found off. Its working on it now but I dont know why it wants a repair after it was running a half hour ago.

If you are getting error 209, please try the following:
    • First, please ensure you are accessing the game via the launcher, not the .exe file.
    • Try closing out of the launcher and re-open it, then run a repair.
    • If you try to repair and it does not work, please delete all .version files in the game's sub folders and try repair again.

Just a heads up (although I'm guessing for quite a few already too late). Had the login timeout issue and followed the instructions to repair. Then I started getting the 209 error AND then followed the above instructions.

Now the only option is to INSTALL the game (no repair option), going through the download process atm :(

I had a friend give me their depot.version file and it let me start the client without having to download it again.

I contacted support 2 hours ago they said it would only take an hour, yet I'm still waiting. I have things to do, I cant wait till your lousy support staff decides that they want to call me. The launcher is broken after the latest patch and you guys are not doing anything to fix it. "So please please help."

Thought I'd chime in with what fixed it for me.

Checked the launcher this morning and obviously it wanted to repair.
Hit repair - downloaded around 20MB. Still wanted repair...
Restarted launcher, hit repair again, downloaded ~550MB.
Restarted launcher again, still wanted repair and complained of version.
Rebooted computer, opened launcher again and I'm good.

Hope this helps some of y'all out :)

Is this error due to "launcher.bethesda.net" being down according to Game Consultant?

All these fixes aren't working. Still getting the 209 error and wants to repair. Only thing that does fix it is to keep relaunching the launcher till it goes away. Man what a buggy piece of ........

It appears they did not remove the 'Beta' switch from the shortcut.

Right click the shortcut and Properties. You should see a 'switch' at the end of the "Target: " string.

Removing this stopped the error. Even if it doesn't for you. Remove it anyway it's specifically for the ESO Beta and should no longer be passed to the Launcher.

EDIT: If you see the switch please post it. I failed to copy the string to the clipboard before applying the change :(

    @illutian Are you talking about this? "C:\Program Files (x86)\Zenimax Online\Launcher\Bethesda.net_Launcher.exe" /InstallOrRun "ESO_Beta" http://puu.sh/8afe1.png

This worked for me. Deleted everything after "...Launcher.exe" and the error 209 no longer comes up.

i think i fixed it for my case. Could be different for yours though. I have added directory to AV exclusion list (probably did not make any difference) and moved file Bethesda.net_Launcher.version located inside of Launcher home directory out of there. Then run Launcher again, it updated something, i got new file. And now its working fine.

well at 10% :( but on the bright side maybe this will fix some of the unknown error bugs i was getting.

Same problem, came back just as soon as I re-downloaded all 22 GB of stuff to my computer, after making space on my SSD for another download of Elder Scrolls Online. Hope we can get a better answer soon, really telling us to basically reload the game to fix this and having it do nothing is just bad form. Just count this as yet more lost game time and move on until its fixed..... again.

Seriously for all the time and effort I am having to spend trying to make this game work, all the bugs, and the annoying daily email telling me that support assumes my missing bank space problems have been fix when nothing has been done to remedy my problems, I am shaking my head that I actually spent real money for all this frustration. I am truly angry that I am being charged to be your beta tester, since this product was no where near launch ready.

I have played many MMORPGs in my gaming days, this has to be one of the worst launches I have ever endured. Not quite as bad as AC2, but then Turbine didn't keep my business after that either. Really that I am even comparing your game to AC2 is not a good thing.

we should not have to do any of this, we should just have to launch the game. This is zenimax's problem to fix. Its bull in this day and age to have to jump through hoops to patch a game. what is this Ultima Online?

Why isn't there a "Force Update" button? Even if I repair and get past the 209 error, my launcher still has trouble "determining the current version." Repeated 209 errors. How do we know we have the current version of the game?

My suggestion with all these problems we seem to have with the launcher after patches is to have a backup of the game folder somewhere. And then if it really goes pear shaped you can copy that backup back and patch that.
  • Bull_Hurley
Tired nermous times of repairing and it is still broken. I'll try the deleting on the files.

At least we are not paying a sub fee for all these bugs and broken things in game.... oh wait.....
  • red_wolf_sb14a_ESO
Okay I delete the .version files again, opened the launcher, closed the launcher without doing another bloody download of the whole game, and restored the .version files, overwriting the .version files it created, and the client actually worked one time for me. As soon as I closed the game 209 was back in the launcher, it was stable for one launch of the game only.

Pulled out my laptop opened up the launcher on it and after the patch.... Error 209.

RDP'd into my work computer just for giggles, opened the ESO launcher in my office.... and Error 209.

I am getting the same behavior on three computers running three different hardware platforms, and three separate versions of Windows (7 pro, 8.1, and 8.1 pro) all 64-bit.

Are there any other suggestions? Or do I just need to hang it up for the night?

Zenimax might want to review their software testing protocols.

All I had to do was delete the "bethesda_net.launcher.version" file from the "\Zenimax Online\Launcher" folder. I restarted the launcher and it updated the launcher, not the game. All is working now.

Anyone who still has the error tried the "This worked for me. Deleted everything after "...Launcher.exe" and the error 209 no longer comes up." solution?
  • acutechb16_ESO
But if I close the launcher and restart it I get the patch manifestation error again. Just have to can that one file before I start the launcher I guess, until they put out a fix.

    didn't work.
did all that, now it won't even let me repair install, it's only letting me install.

I really wanted to get to level 36 last night - maitnance
i figured i'd get lvl 36 in the morning before work - not going to happen.
if i get home from work, and i still can't play.. i'm going to reconsider playing this game any further.

    ERROR 209 FIX!

Find your zenimax folder in program files. Open it and go into elder scrolls online. You will see 3 folders. In each folder there is a respective version folder.
    vo.en.version
    game.version
    depot.version
    DO NOT DELETE.
CUT AND PASTE THEM TO A DIFFERENT FOLDER.... doesn't matter where.
Open launcher. It will probably try to re download game. It also may start the client and at same time try downloading the full game, as it is confused without the folders.
Close both the client, and the launcher.
Put the version folders BACK WHERE YOU FOUND THEM. Re open launcher. This should fix the problem. Basically shocks the launchers into working =p
You can avoid re downloading the game by doing this, however it is NOT ADVISED as ANY AND ALL messing around with these folders could cause you to have to re install the entire game, so backing up the game files is a extremely good idea.

To TESO team, would be great to have a tool made that does this kind of thing when you get error 209... re downloading the game is just a horrid hassle.

Its all because the login and authentication servers are getting confused with the version number, or at least that's what it looks like..
This is game breaking and stops people from playing... a tool.... yes a tool would be great...

I deleted one of the ESO game folders in order to even get past the "INSTALL" check and now I'm back to "Login timeout" error I stared with, after going through the previous Error 209, am now back full circle hours later minus one megaserver's worth of files.

Repairing multiple times in multiple ways does nothing.

Guess I am done. $100 dollars for 10 days of play.

I purchased this game last night. I installed it this morning. I have done this 3 times. Each time, I ended up attempting to uninstall, and then reinstall, as documented here:
    https://help.elderscrollsonline.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6486

I am now downloading 22 GIGS for the THIRD time today. This has not been a good first impression. Heh, I even waited until it had been out for a week.

    What's next?

I bought the game today. Downloaded once pretty fast. Got error 209 so followed their advice and uninstalled and re-installed. Have been dowloading since 2pm, it is now 1:25 am and I am at 20%.

    Not the best start.
