Those are doable on cp160 tank who never read any guides and have random mix of gear/skills on them. Basically you just need enough HP and range taunt for that.

    Title:

I think the answer for that is quite simple. We should rather ask "why so many people play as DPS" ?

IMHO it dates back to the old arcade games. Players back then were rewarded with numerical score. In other words - "points". You got more points ? Then you are better than the others. This basically stayed with us till present times.

Players like to feel that their actions have affect on the game. "DPS" makes it posible for them. They love to see enemy boss "health" bar going down, beeing afcected by their actions. Also, they have their "numbers" in form of DPS they have done (yey I can do 30k dps ! etc.)

Other games do that too. Mobas in particular. If some one heals some one - it is not shown. When some one tanks dmg so teammates can kill the attacker - it is not shown. What is shown however is who killed who. Then when players "A" killed player "B" every one playing the match can see it.

As far as I know, when it comes to numbers & roles reward, only two games have done it right - TF2 & Overwatch.

So what to do in general to make tanking & healing equally attractive ? In short - add numbers.

Make training "tanking" dummies so tanks can say: "I can block 100K dbps" (damage blocked per second)
Make training "healer" dummies so healer can say: "I can heal 50k hps" (heals per second).

Aditionally add stats acces in dungeons so every one can say:
"Omg our tank blocked 1M dmg, omg that is crazy. If not that dude, we would have been dead by now."
Same for the healer so every one could say: "Omg, our healer have heald 2M health in this dungeon. We would have been dead by now if not him / her."

I enjoy tanking simply because of this reason and this reason alone:

I like to support my team in any role that is needed.

So I have a DPS and constantly try to improve DPS so I can be the best I can be for the group.
I have a healer so I can supply resources, healing and buffs/debuffs for my team to help aid them.
I have a tank so when we need one for a certain content, I can provide that role.

It really just comes down to personality and what people enjoy. I enjoy being support, even though people don't call DPS support, I still see it as such because you are supporting the teams effort to move forward in content. That is how I see it.

there are hardcore boss fights where the tank has to perma taunt several minions in order to complete the hardcore mode
and when the DPSs are too weak, those minions are getting more and more
and now you will have to use your single target taunt on 5-10 enemies in a row?
just give me an AOE taunt lol

I made a Warden tank back during Christmas only to have an extra alt to run New Life dailies, I picked a tank as I already had a healer and a DPS at that time but never really played it till this current event during the delves/WBs week. So I haven't really tanked per se except a few WBs but I hate it so far  It is such a frickin pain to level up as you have the DPS of a noodle. I am used to this, I have mained a healer in various MMOs for quite a long time and also played tanks but at least my templar healer would benefit from the points and passives invested in magicka so that even before I had enough skill points to get several damaging abilities I could still kill things. With this class after you invested your points in tanking utilities, there's not much left to do DPS (sharing shard achievements, I'm looking at you!).

Now I'm going to throw him in dungeons and having had a terrible experience so far, I fear I am not going to enjoy it either.

I love tanking, but it shouldn't be surprising that it's unpopular (it is for every MMO I can think of). Simply put, players love seeing big damage numbers. Generally, popularity is DPS >>>>> Healer > Tank.

BUT dealing almost zero damage is normal for a tank. You can't and

Allow me to STOP YOU RIGHT THERE. I main a tank job in FFXIV and do at least 50% of an average (raiding players) dps damage. It works great and I see a LOT more people playing tanks there than I do here where it sucks.
Playing your character the way your character should play is all that matters. Play as well as you can but never betray the character. Doing so would make playing an mmoRPG pointless.

      1. Narrow the gap between top end and average dps.
      2. AoE taunt. Make it easy to tank.
      3. Existing tanks stop giving raid spec recommendations. A lot of tanks talk like you need to min max to do well which intimidates people.

All a new tank has to do is block and keep the boss taunted to do all dungeons, including vet. Focus on the mechanics of the fight and not some silly buff rotation that doesn’t matter in a dungeon.

As a healer I’m happy if I get a tank who blocks and uses sword and board. Seriously. Most don’t even need to be healed.

New tanks get intimidated by all the raid spec talk and focus on the wrong things. Usually I find new tanks focus on trivial things at the expense of situational awareness.

Also, it's HELLA easier on my carpal tunnel than DPS or healing is! If my hands are acting up bad I can usually still manage to tank when DPSing would send me to have to soak my hands in icewater for the rest of the night.

Thank you for pointing this out. Seriously I may start tanking more just because of this tip. I find healing to be better than DPS, but if the healing spot is filled I'll switch to DPS and regret it later if I'm already feeling it.

I don't think I can add anything unique to this thread, but if someone is tallying answers here is why I avoid tanking:
      1. I am bad at navigation / maps / directions. Very very bad. This means I get nervous as a tank; people often seem to expect them to lead the way.
      2. The dual spec point is excellent. My tank is somewhere between entry level and midpoint. I tanked an nCR the other day no problem, but I would not feel confident doing vet trials or even some DLC dungeons. My tank needs more skill points, increased reputation in the skill lines, etc., but regular content IS NOT FUN on my tank. So I log on with her to tank, and then I log off. If I could easily and quickly switch to a build where I can participate in other content in a less painful way, I'd naturally just spend more time on her.
      3. I feel that tanks especially don't have as many tools in their arsenal to help "cover" for lackluster DPS, while DPS can often adjust to accommodate for tanks and healers that are sub par. That can be really frustrating as a tank when the group is struggling and there is nothing you can switch out to help.

As a couple of examples, DPS can put on a shield or a self heal. Healer can switch out buffs or heals for a few DPS abilities, and put on a DPS monster set, or even go full hybrid.

Tanking can be fun, and this is the first MMO in which I was brave enough to try it, but it can be daunting.

My #1 wish for ESO Today: Decouple achievements from character progress and tracking.

I play a tank all the time even in overland. Yes it's slower than playing a pure DD however it's fast enough as the monsters really aren't that strong. I play a sorceress with the clannfear pet for tanky healing (35% of my 30k+ health is quite a bit, even if it's only to me and my pet) and wear full heavy armor with Julianos and Vampire's Cloak sets. I always have more than 30k health and 30k magicka and I use heavy attacks all the time to get my magicka recharged. Blockade of storms and lightning flood are my main attack powers and combined with the lightning staff heavy attack will usually finish off anything overland. Bosses I can tank with the ice staff and power surge and boundless storm buffs.

I've tanked this way in dungeons including Darkshade Caverns II where I ended up soloing the final boss as everyone else died quickly and died again when I ressed them from the poison.

Now I don't use sword and shield when tanking, but I do keep aggro as I have both the staff and Inner Rage from Undaunted.

There are fun ways to tank and still do some damage.

Ironically, this is one of the reasons I don't tank, too. I have a terrible sense of direction, and it's super embarrassing when you charge down the wrong corridor like an idiot. Mini-map might make me want to tank more!

The other thing is that I find tanking kind of claustrophobic, even with the camera zoomed out all the way. You're right up against the boss or the mob, and visually it can be a zoo. (Grobull the Transmuted, anyone?) I main a healer, which is practically the opposite point of view, where you're behind everyone, monitoring at a distance, almost.

A lot of it boils down to temperament, probably.

Make tanking not so dang hard! Stop nerfing the heck out of tanks while simultaneously causing them to have to do more and more, like having to keep lightning an/or Ice staves in addition to all the other crap they have to carry around. Tanks should get some kind of special freebie bonuses just for being willing to tank. I have a tank, I could maybe be good, but I hate it. It’s a total PITA.

Regarding navigation, I just tell the group I'm lost. There are 2 dungeons I get lost in if I don't have a quest. I just tell them.

I personally feel that if we are talking about normal dungeons, even my crap tanks I'm leveling can ensure we won't wipe, even when the DPS is non-existent.

      __________________________Backstories:_________________________

Ras Kalik the Vestige, a renown Redguard warrior; He has been blessed to save Tamriel from Molag Bal’s destructive Planemeld while reuniting the Five Companions. His further accomplishments after defeating Molag Bal, has been to stop the destruction of Morrowind, the Clockwork City, return order to the isle of Summerset and create a new king in Wrothgar and a queen in Elsywer. These events have made him a living legend and continue to lead him into new adventures throughout Tamriel, as well as into the hearts of many ladies including the Elf Queen, Aryenn. Over many years of adventurous travels, Ras Kalik had become a loner, until he re-visited his homeland of Alik'r.

Alik'r and it's cities were overrun by the undead Ra-Netu and therefore he made an allegiance with Alik'r's own Ash'abah tribe. These Ash'abah with his help, cleansed the city of Sentinel in Alik'r desert and it's surrounding areas of the undead brought to life by the Withered Hand. After rescuing Sentinel from the undead zombies, King Fahara’jad’s personal bodyguard the Goliath of Hammerfell, who was given this name by Imperials in the region; was asked to assist the tribe after learning of the defeat of the Withered Hand to the Ash'abah. Kalik promised Goliath he would task him with fighting living enemies on the battlefield if he so desired. Goliath being a Yokudan warrior wields a massive sword in respect to the Ansei, a gift given by the Imperial, Cinan Tharn. Not many soldiers are able to wield double two handed weapons, but Goliath loves to get up and personal in a fight, so he also carries a giant maul, both weapons laced with magical flames.

Jux Blackheart is a master thief that masquerades as a Bard at the Sisters of the Sands inn, with his younger sidekick Lucky Hunch for pilfering and gambling during this time. Jux was known to infiltrate any towns bank vault he came across and even delved into Ayelid ruins without detection. Kalik can vividly recall the night he met the famed thief. Jux found himself rummaging thru a slightly inebriated Kalik’s pocket for too long, on a full-mooned night and because of his greed and the glimmer of his golden armor in the moonlight. He lost his left pinky fingertip as a lesson! But in return, he gained a new friend, as it was his first time since a child being caught red-handed...

Upon arrival back in the Alik'r after many moons of adventuring, Ras Kalik ventures to Bergama. Visiting The Winking Jackal, he runs into Jux Blackheart, who introduces him to the coin game Crowns vs Forebearers (Heads vs Tails) and Golden Dwemer (RBG).... Jux constantly takes gold from the unfortunate thru theft or gambling, his biggest gambling victim is actually his partner in crime known as Lucky Hunch the Gambler. Lucky doesn't mind losing any gold coins to Jux... as Jux saved him from Altmer slavers in Summerset, by stealing a key and sending him on a boat to the mainland years prior. Lucky spent years in slavery with Khajiits in Summerset and picked up the art of subterfuge, using illusion magic disguises and stealing there.

Kaotik Von’Daemon an outcast, and a half-caste between a Breton mother and a Redguard father. Kaotik become a pariah due to his conjuration of Daedra pets. He was taught healing magic during his childhood years by his Breton mother. His father due to Redguard customs exiled him from the desert, sending him by wagon caravan to be a soldier in the war in Cyrodiil. He happened to meet Kalik while traveling from Alik'r, during this long caravan ride the caravan he was in was ambushed in Bangkorai by a group of bandits. Kalik by chance was also traveling thru this area on his Auridon Warhorse (which was bestowed to him by his friend, Darien Gautier). During this ambush, Kalik was able to rescue five hostages from the bandits. Kaotik was the first rescued, and Ras Kalik also recruited him to be in the Ash'abah tribe. These core Ash'abah tribesmen may never be seen together in travel as they partake in their own adventures but they always know what each other is doing; as they frequent a hideout in northern Bankorai. Their hideout an old Orc castle ruin, is kept watch by Nuzhimeh and she passes messages written between them, and frequently they also enjoy her company and her bed.

The other men rescued were a Dunmer banker, an Imperial mercenary and two other soldiers, an Imperial and a Breton Knight, stating proudly he was an Akavir descendent. One of the Imperials, Cinan, claimed to be related to Abnur Tharn the Battlemage of the Imperial Elder Council (One of Ras Kalik's mentors in the Five Companions). Cinan Tharn was really Abnur's drunkard treasure hunting illegitimate son. He was caught smuggling artifacts out of the Ayleid ruins in Cyrodiil and the elder of the two Imperials was Tyrus Septim a retired Imperial navy battle-mage (now a Lycan mercenary living in the city of Rimmen) and guard to the Tharn family. As much as Abnur Tharn hated his half-sister Euraxia, he dislikes his bas†ard son Cinan more. Tyrus now a ruffian and privateer had been paid by Abnur Tharn to watch over Cinan as much as possible. Cinan Tharn a drunkard, loves to drink at least a quarter barrel of Nord mead before he raids various delves and dungeons for relics to sell on the black market. Cinan also plans to one day, run an illegal gambling ring... which he thinks will net him more gold for his wares.

The Dunmer captive shackled to the Imperials looked familiar to Kalik from his time in Morrowind.... and he recognized him as Tythis Andromo a House Telvanni slave-owner and banker from Vvardenfell. During a rough interrogation to Tythis, Ras Kalik learnt why the bandits accosted him. The racist Dunmer was providing slaves as soldiers for the Three Banner War. The bandits were trying to negotiate a lucrative ransom for Andromo and the Imperials.... Kalik did not need any of this gold and he could never set Tythis free as he did with the two Imperial soldiers. His past involvement with slavery and war crimes, made Kalik's blood boil. He chose not to execute Tythis, as he figured the worse punishment for this former rich and opulent slave owner, is to now be an imprisoned servant for Ras Kalik and the tribe.

Herzog Zwei the Genesis a reknown Imperial/Akavirri battle-mage. His roots going back to Akavir through his mother’s bloodline. (His mother is descended from the Akaviri, through Versidue-Shae, and his Imperial father met her in Hakoshae, while traveling) Herzog earned the nickname "the Genesis" from his father as a child, as he was his mother's first born child, and last, as she tragically died in child-birth.

Herzog was seeking to purchase an artifact from Cinan Tharn, before their capture and was meeting Tyrus while in Rimmen, who introduced him to Cinan. This artifact being the Ayelid artifact; the sword Sinweaver. After their rescue and the exchange of gold to Cinan for the sword he decided to slip away before Ras Kalik could question who he was, and why the Akavir descendant really wanted that sword. Herzog was headed to Nagastani — An Ayleid ruin in eastern Cyrodiil. He had read in scrolls that the Sword would give him magical powers to meet his mothers spirit, if he performed an Ayleid ritual at an old shrine hidden there. Equipped with the artifact sword, he was off to start his own adventure but Ras Kalik, did indeed notice the sword however and instead sent a letter to Jux Blackheart (whom also was interested in Ayleid treasures), to attempt to find Herzog and acquire the sword. (*Azani Blackheart in Elder Scroll's Oblivion is Jux's descendant some 747 years later)

And so the Redguard, Imperial and Akaviri men parted ways ... While Ras Kalik went off to Elsweyr to encounter the latest threat to Tamriel, with Abnur Tharn and Sai Sahan - - DRAGONS!! Little did Ras Kalik know a few people were awaiting him in Senchal besides Sai. A necromancer survived his attack on the Withered Hand, while in Alik'r. The necromancer known as Auriek Siet'ka is also following him to the land of the Khajiits and Cacique the Sage of Ius a Shaman mystic who has become attuned spiritually with Tu'whacca (a Redguard God) and Ius (the Animal God), after being burned severely by the escaped dragons in Elsywer, is awaiting his arrival also. Aurik is a soldier of the Daggerfall Covenant that was introduced to necromancy while in the military, even though this magicka art is not spoken of openly by most of the Military leaders. He came to Alik'r and worked with the Withered Hand before Ras Kalik intervened on their plans. After the defeat of the Withered Hand, he aligned with the Worm Cult, and is constantly adapting and perfecting his necromantic arts.

After his journey to Rimmen, Kalik heads south to Senchal, in the southern regions of Elyswer. This new adventure will also put him on a path to meet a strange Redguard man. The stranger which was infected with an untreated Peyrite disease and also was the exiled from the Order of the New Moon cult, due to his sickness. He originally joined the cult to worship Laatvulon, the green dragon, mistakenly thinking it was the Daedric prince Peyrite. This confused and suffering cultist is known as Tsar al-Bomba and he is on a path to spread the disease. He was originally infected in Orccrest while recruiting members there. Can Ras Kalik and the shaman Cacique cure this poor soul, only time will tell. Little does Tsar al-Bomba know, that his infection is tied to Vampirism, and eventually the desire for blood will take over his mind. Senchal also offers Kalik his latest love interest... Aeliah. Whom he fondly led thru battles with the Dragonguard.

After the trek thru the heat, tropical and desert climate of Northern and Southern Elyswer, Ras Kalik heads north to the cold mountain range of Skyrim. His companion friend Lyris beckons for him with a letter sent by crow...

Movárth Piquine - a former vampire hunter (now infected), within the Fighter's Guild (and a secretive necromancer) was in Skyrim working with the Morthaal Guard. On a patrol mission he was caught in Frewien's ice curse outside of Morthaal with the frozen undead. Movárth's vampiric infection kept him from becoming an undead minion to the curse. He was able to use necromantic ice-magic to encase himself safely until he was freed with Freiwen, when the Vestige Ras Kalik broke the curse.

Uri Ice-Heart - brother of Urfon Ice-Heart. The twin sons of Atli and Oljourn Ice-Heart. The Ice-Heart family are originally from Markarth but now reside on the Jerall Mountain range near Cyrodiil, with their younger sister Araki. The twins had joined the Winterborn Reachmen while living in Markarth. Urfon pushed west to Orsinium with the Winterborn Clan, leaving his family behind. Uri stayed behind with his parents and sister to live in the family cabin for safety, avoiding the Vampire plague infiltrating the Reach. After news reaches him and he hears of Urfon's death... Uri leaves and heads home and is seeking vengeance. Meanwhile, his sister has also moved on to Windhelm to join the Fighter's guild. He will visit his sister, once before going to seek vengeance and she will craft him armor mixed with ice, called Stalhrim armor. Uri fearing death, after his brother's passing, falls victim to the convincing talk of Movárth at a Nordic tavern, and will also becomes a vampire.

At first, I loved tanking on my imperial dk..long time ago. My biggest problem was getting lost when everyone expected me to lead. I'm very disorientated when it comes to remembering what direction to go. This is due to my brain. My memory is shocking so I find myself having to relearn things over and over. Think of 10 first dates...that movie where she forgets everything she did the day before...that's my brain. Ok it's not always that bad but not great either lol

I don’t understand the question presented in the OP as I don’t have trouble finding tanks when I need a tank.

If this has to do with the GF and the lack of tanks then the question should be how to we get tanks to use the GF since the shortage of tanks in the GF has more to do with decent tanks avoiding using the GF due to bad experiences.

It’s better to get into groups via our raiding guilds, even our casual guilds or Zone, than to use the GF.

What makes tanks happy in their role? Why do they enjoy it?

Generally, the answer would be multispecs (obviously including CP) so people could tank if they put in the effort to gear and learn without hurting their main role.

The issue with lack of tanks and lack of heals is mostly due to the 4 member group size though.

Even if everyone was a raider... (figure 2 tanks 2-3 healers a raid) and every raider formed dungeon groups though group finder... you are always going to be left with dps without a tank or healer eventually.

Also,. I'd go for an ultimate that deals damage based on how much damage you take and multiply it and sending it back.

That way I can tank and do damage. (Even if it's a fraction of the total dps. I just want to feel like I'm getting my shots in )

Tanks do not need an AoE taunt. If there were an AoE taunt groups probably wouldn't need a tank.
and then the parrot said, "must be the water mines green too."
