What would inspire more people to pick tank role?

All that said, over the past year Zenimax has also been doing things that make me NOT want to tank anymore. Those things are called DLC dungeons. I like tanking. I really do. My primary tank is pretty darned solid. But when they start making all this crap in DLC dungeons that one-shots you regardless? Screw it. That's not fun. This tank largely refuses to set foot in those dungeons because they've got too many mechanics and they're punishingly unforgiving even on normal. I miss normal dungeons actually being normal, and vet dungeons not being super hard mode.

What about the joy of some bosses like Planar Inhibitor and many more untauntable where your tank is completely useless and you are expected to "switch to dps"? Yes, sometimes I feel like ZoS hates tanks.

I'm not phobic on all of the DLC dungeons.... the Imperial City ones aren't so bad. For some reason I kind of like Planar Inhibitor. I don't know why. Maybe I like it because it's a teaching moment. "Okay, guys... now I know I've been doing a good job at tanking. But it doesn't matter how good I am, this is going to kill me. PLEASE TAKE THE GODS DAMNED PINION!" =)

An aoe taunt way to easy to spam puncture on the same target over and over becuase they overlap

Functional frost staff tanking sounded fun except zos doesnt have a clue when it comes to taunting.

Tanks to feel tanky just keep nerfing them into glass.

Tank is brain dead easy to play and it gets even more boring when your dps are bad, forcing you to waste time.
Want more tanks? Get more dps to learn their role.

I don't really play group but I have a few times with my sword and shield character. Most of the time I just get booted from the group but once or twice the group was really appreciative that I was able to keep the enemies attention on me while they did the damage, and I really enjoyed that. I got a kick out of being the one who stood there with their shield up taking hits for me team mates.

But most of the time I just get booted because I'm not an expert on the ins and outs of group dungeons and don't have my character speced for that. I play my character for my own enjoyment, using medium armor for example.

    Hope that helped.

First boss of vMHK is a great, early way to know if your group is gonna have a bad time in the entire dungeon.

First serious: when I lift my shield there needs to be a cone of protection immediately behind me. That’s one of the things Tera got right about tanking. The lance and shield class was my fav.

I love to tank. But this game...
Stop it with the “can’t taunt this” bs.
Or the “this phase is random targeting” bs.

I can’t stand it when I’m all set to mitigate damage and position bosses and none of it matters. Just deeps. Dps fry the whole thing, no tank needed. The first time I encountered this was years ago in Darkshade Caverns 2 and its only gotten progressively worse since. I tank because I don’t dps. I’m not a dd with a taunt. A healer contributing to damage when everyone is topped up is fine, but a tank is different.

    Now less serious:

    I’m a tank because I’m the hero!
Me me me!! I want the boss’ attention!! Pay no attention to the mage behind the curtain!

Also I like to flash my tankiness by running by the Undaunted Enclave with my Ebon balls out and not queuing for pledges

So in that vein, I need bigger shields and Knight Commander Pantius type “back flag” aka sashimono. Like in Hel Ra Citadel.

Make a new “must have tank” set to replace Ebon with the back flag. (Just please put it in a 4 man like Ebon is)

Sponsor “stickers” on my shield! “This crowd control brought to you by Lone Wolf Guild”

My previous ideas on this subject:

Honestly Iove this idea. Adding the cone of protection when blocking to s&b would be cool. It would be great for pve and PvP. It would go a long way to help me feel like a tank.

I main a tank, I out 10 points into health, and the rest into magicka or stamina. I can still get 49k health from sets if i need to, and excess of 30k magicka or stamina for overland solo for dps.

I will never understand these types of comments geared towards tanks and healers. Tanking and healing require more situational awareness and understanding of mechanics compared to DPS.

Plus, in my experience, DPS tend to be the ones who are the most "brain dead". Especially in trials. They just get focused on their rotation and ignore mechanics and sometimes have to have their hands held the entire trial.

Give them more dps like ff14 does where a tank's dps matters in endgame content.

OR make applying debuffs for your raid group "feel" better than looking at a debuff bar while most dps have no idea the tank is doing a good job debuffing or not.

Maybe instead of a dps meter have an armor piercing mechanic for tanks to do rotations, keep up a good one and it strips the mob of resistences and give others a visual cue on how good the stripping is

Let’s be honest here guys, any role in this game is brain dead.

You have 10 skills 2 ultimates and have to left click in between abilities. I mean come on.

I’ve played games that require over 100 keybinds and required me to not only become fluent in autohotkey, but to also play my keyboard like Beethoven.

Calling out a tank, who incidentally has to do a lot more than dps in an engagement, is downright silly.

Also healers need to have the best situational awareness of all and keep track of everyone.

If you don’t play all roles in this game across all your characters, then what are you even doing?

I’d probably not play if all I had was 15 dps characters.

How about making a fun and different build, like Waffenacht's tank sorc?: https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/452276/unkillable-sorcerer#latest

People get bored of using the same sets and same race. There are clearly other ways to build a tank that works.

    15K, that is elitism :)
But yes its plenty of dps checks in the game, BC2 has two of them.
No most don't notice them as group dps is adequate like 30K single target.
However leveling an tank I managed to get into an group in nBC2 who wiped on keeper Indril and the last boss because low dps. i think they thought AoE would hurt other players:)

shortly after you have an group optionally add missing guy as pug and run.
Tanks don't control queue they own it so why pug.

Probably fewer people having rigid sticks up their rear ends when it comes to what tanks use in terms of gear, Skills, and so on. So many people scream that a tank HAS to have things like Ebon, Alkosh, Lord Warden, etc, and while some of these sets are easy to get (Ebon is a cakewalk to get with a bit of patience), others like Alkosh that are considered 'mandatory' will often put people off wanting to bother with tanking because of the grind required to get the gear.

Then there's tanks all being told they can't possibly tank without running 1H&S for the Pierce Armor skill, because of Major Fracture and Major Breach. Never mind there are other skills that apply these (granted they are Class bound in the case of the former). So people are essentially forced into running 1H&S/Destro backbar if they want to tank, because everyone says 'Unstable Wall with Crusher enchant on Destro to keep that debuff up too lol'.

Which is another problem. Tanks are expected to provide so much utility when the healer should also be expected to run utility and not just stand there spamming BoL or Shards every two seconds. Rotations for tanks can be hard for people not familiar with it to learn because there are so many buffs and debuffs they're expected to keep track of, which generally isn't the case for DPS or healers. Sure, those roles have to watch their own buffs, and healers have to watch HP, but tanks have more to keep track of. It's sort of off-putting to people wanting to learn the role, and imo it's why so many people prefer DPSing or healing.

My tank runs 5/5 Ebon/Plague Dr and Lord Warden for the monster set. I can easily hold a boss or the 'big bads' like 2H mobs without much problem, I poke the enemy with my Pierce Armor to keep that debuff up, I recently swapped my Resto Staff that I was using for Ward Ally for an Ice Staff. I'm going to try Razor Caltrops as a soft AoE taunt at some point. Recently got Silver Leash because smacking enemies with Inner Fire and waiting for them to run over can be a pain (and it doesn't cause ranged enemies to come to you, which keeps them out of range of getting burned down). I don't mind getting skills that are genuinely helpful and contribute to the role I'm doing, but there are a lot of people who look at all this, are told they have to do it or else they're a bad or 'fake' tank, and decide it's just easier to go DPS everything instead.

TL;DR What would really help people start picking up tanking more is not constantly having what's considered meta or BIS shoved down their throats at every turn.

I think one of the things that annoys me most is the inability to instantly switch from tank to other roles or into PvP spec.

I think attribute respec is mostly to blame.

Once I spec my char into tank, it stays a tank, unlike my other characters that can change from DD to healer to PvP in an instant.

I like the original vision of ZOS with regards to roles, but wish they had fixed things to stick to that vision.

Every class has interesting and unique things they could theoretically do while tanking, but players quickly latched onto the meta tank which was the DK playstyle. In return ZOS introduced skills so all the classes to try tanking like DKs. The narrow vision of helping DPS to kill stuff quickly is all we have now, if you aren't doing that you're playing the role of luggage. Nothing else seems useful and so here we are, one more year with the same old meta.
