Do we really have to datamine everything?

Way to ruin some fun and excitement from guessing :( have some patience people. It's fine to datamine something but to find out what the whole chapter is? :/ come on...

Do you always have to read everything?

Come on, you telling me you are forced against your will and have to read every post that is data mined? Are you telling me you can't control yourself NOT TO click on those links? Not like someone is trying to trick you, it's clearly labeled.

Also what is ruined? What have you gotten from the data mine stuff? What is spoiled?

The problem isn't me or anyone clicking/reading datamined stuff. Clearly you're not understanding the bigger picture here, but rather think about it in a very selfish way.

If the devs/community managers see it, whether it is allowed or not, effectively changes the way we'll be getting the future news, and can (in some cases) effectively ruin the puzzle run.

Not to mention people often slap the most important thing in the topic's title. Eg. CHAPTER III - ELSWEYR, DRAGONS IN NEXT CHAPTER DATAMINED etc.

It's no fun when everything just gets slapped straight in front of your face, instead of slowly revealing bits and pieces and putting them together... It's like dating. If a girl gave me everything right away, I'd lose interest, be disappointed or get bored pretty much instantly.

But what more could I expect from people blindly addicted to the game, right? Or is it just entitlement of people in this age, where everyone demands everything instantly without much effort or any patience whatsoever? Makes me sad.

THIS. Exactly. How on Hell someone has come to think that putting the formal announcement of the new chapter in something dataminable was a clever thing, [snip]?...

Because they have a expectation that people will follow the terms of service. Datamining is hacking the client which is a violation of TOS. Notice that dataminers are usually from places that is difficult for the tos to be enforced.
No looking into data files does not qualify as hacking.
It has been done on pretty much all games and none has protested against it. Even then caught red handed cutting content for selling as DLC and similar.

As far as I'm concerned, datamining is only a very short step removed from hacking. Fair enough, and if that's how some get their jollies then so be it but at least please leave it off public forums and keep it to yourselves. Those who are interested in such things will know where to find it. I would also hope that any threads leaking advance information will be deleted as promptly as some others are.

None ever are deleted though. Makes one wonder if the info isn't purposefully put there for dataminers to find and leak.

Some devs do draw a hard line on that. Cryptic will ban you for publishing datamines. (Or at least they would, back when I still played their games.)

"Why do datamines exist?" is kinda the wrong question though.

When you're developing software, a lot of times you'll create code that ultimately doesn't get used. It goes into various systems or modules that get abandoned. When that happens, you do not pull that code out. This is an, "if it isn't broken, don't 'fix' it" situation. Pulling code from a stable piece of software can result in instabilities. Now, there are devs who steam clean their own code, until it's all functional. (Id's code tends to be freakishly clean.) But, for most developers, you're going to end up with a lot of stuff sprinkled in that is either not yet implemented, or was cut. That's part of why datamines can occur at all (at least as something other than viral marketing), because something will be coded for future release, and then it will get dropped, or something was developed in tandem with other systems, but hasn't made it out yet.

In the case of this specific datamine, I suspect it's because, on Tuesday, they're going to push a live update of the Crown Store, without taking the game down for maintenance. That means, all of the assets need to be in the game at that time. I also suspect the 15th was preplanned. (I mean, I don't "suspect," @ninja614 is getting flown out there, meaning this was at least three months in the planning.)

Short of taking the game down, mid-livestream, to push a patch, this stuff needed to be in the build, and they held off until the last possible moment.

You are auditing data that has been installed on your system with your permission. Part hacking, sure, because you are examining data that's not user accessible. But, part theft? You're not taking anything from anyone. You're not even depriving them of that thing. You're just examining data that's been placed in front of you in more depth than others.

Indeed. If they don't want stuff to be datamined, they should have proper protocol to clean their builds before releasing it. There is absolutely no reason I can think of as to why the stuff that has been datamined needs to be in the current build of the game. The chapter isn't going to release next week, so I don't see why all the fluff around it had to be in the current build.

Sorry, but that's just extremely bad practice. Especially for a live product. This is absolutely not the norm in software development for production builds, far from it. VCS and TDD tools exist for a reason. You also don't merge half a feature into a production build, that is what branches are for.

To be honest though, at least in this case, I think it was intentional that they put it there for us to find it. Maybe they didn't expect it to be found as quickly, but definitely found. It's not a normal, natural datamine that was done this time with a bunch of new assets found like normal, a bunch of new things in the language files for dialogue.

This time it was explicitly very few things, basically those pictures of the icons, the few crown store things and the general chapter message. Nothing else. They might have been immediately confirming what the chapter will be, but they added nothing other than that - something that any standard datamining session would reveal.

I say datamine it all. I was on the verge of getting bored with the games grinding. Once i heard Necromancers are coming. I'm back interested in the game farming gear for my Necromancer and ready for it.

First, I'm firmly in the camp of "if you install stuff onto my hard drive, it's free to be examined in as much detail as I can".
In TES single player games (and others), we got amazing mod tools out of people who did exactly that and picked the game apart very thoroughly.

Theft maybe a strong word, but there could be commercial impact on timings. Other games plot lines etc etc hence this stuff is often communicated in particular way n

But agreed if so, they shouldn't make it possible to do!

I guess i just don't see why its done, I'm happy to roll with the timing of their marketing, the mining wrecks someone's plan at zos for sure lol

You also have to consider a majority of players will never even see datamined stuff. I personally like finding out new and exciting stuff coming to the crown store via datamining so I can save my crowns! Finding out about other stuff like dlc send chapters is like small bits of information of what could come. Remember things that have been released weren't necessarily datamined beforehand as well. As Poss has said, anything datamined is subject to change or never make it in game

I like when people post datamined info very much, every update I wait for new datamines :)
Most of all I wanted to see what the next crate season will bring, also some upcoming store items. I had really high hopes for Baandari season, but all those mounts look totally disappointing to me :/ Few items from ordinary store interest me so far, but I need to see them in game. Now I want to know about next-next crate season... :D

What really surprised me though: upcoming content! Elsweyr, Necromancer and Dragons <3 It's the first "chapter" which actually interests me :) I only dislike pre-order bonus mount... Summerset "chapter" had nice flaming senche mount and it was major reason why I preordered it.
