Like others said above it's just the lack of reward for it weighed against the time you spend fishing. I got the master angler title and it was a mind numbing achievement I'm sure most who have that achievement can agree. I only fish now when a new dlc or chapter are released for achievement. If they had a daily fishing quest or something like that would give more incentive to fish then I would fish more often.

Fishing takes long and doesn't really reward for the long wait. Hence why barely anyone fishes.

Hmm...why isn't sitting in your chair staring at your character waiting for a button prompt to pop up more popular...?

Now if there was more to it, like a mini-game, with better rewards, then we probably wouldn't be having this conversation.

EDIT: just realized this thread is age old, sorry did not notice....

There are just two reason why you might want to fish: 1) to get the achievements. 2) because you just enjoy standing there motionless all day fishing.

Im assuming only a minority like 2) and since 1) is just for the achievement of it, only players that care about collecting achievements will do it and then they wont ever do it again, unless they are in the 2) group, which is no doubt a quite small group.

Fishing doesn't make much gold, it's really a low time to gold ratio. It's very repetitive and quickly gets boring too. Additionally you cannot get anything worthwhile, other than those golden caviar resources (lol forgot the name), but the drop rate is so low so you will earn much much more gold from just farming, which also involves a lot more action and diversity, which makes it less boring.

Imagine if ZOS made weekly fishing contests with special rewards only obtainable through winning, like WOW do in their Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza each Sunday. That would be awesome, that would be something Im sure would attract more players to the art of fishing.

I was turned on to fishing in Summerset and find it a relaxing way to end my game playing day. However...I find it very boring in the rest of the zones as there just aren't enough unique rewards. Please improve fishing with better rewards!

For me it was the bait I never could get enough bate to actually fish the pools and by the time I do the pools have so overfished that they respawn by the time I get there and it takes me almost and hour to get three things for anniversary. SO input time spent doing it and time spent on it does not reward me properly to warrant fishing since you now nerfing anything as more players did it made sense in the first place.

I'm pondering why my bait collects, from a farmer's perspective, do not sell.
What could be done to improve the popularity of fishing? Or more to the point, bait sales.

I think most people who fish get enough bait on their own; for a while I was in a fishing guild (until it broke up with Internet Drama), and could sell a few stacks, but not many.

I've always spent downtime (waiting for groups, or during guild auctions or raffles) fishing, and the Perfect Roe's a nice money-maker, sacks and furnishings are a nice bonus. Summerset and Artaeum adding unique loot bags is a huge improvement to motivation to fish, I want more zones to have such things.

I would still like to see new fishing poles, bait, and maybe more of a fishing minigame instead of just waiting for the bobber, but it's fine for a very casual activity. The new fishing food has minimal effect that I've seen, but I've only used it a couple times.

for me bait is an issue not getting but the running around and gathering it to fish wish that the fish bait like the minnow and shads could be put in a pond or lake and multiply over tie at your house something like that take the running around to gather enough to make fishing worth while.

here is an idea for devs: thay can make some fishing holes legendary [blue glowing, just to differ them from ordinary fishing holes] (same as enchanting stones and psijic portals - they share same node).
So you can catch more valuable things/fishes from that holes...

Its not fun? But I love spending hours pulling salmon out of a river instead of the one f*&^%$ fish I need for the accomplishment.

Funny side story about this. Some dude got all kinds of angry when I fished in his spot with him. Guess he didn't know IT HELPS HIM.

Think of this, Zelda Ocarina of Time had a fun mini game mechanic for fishing that actually led to many players, myself included, burning hours and hours just fishing with little reward aside from achievement, and this was back when I was a kid playing N64.. fast forward to today and ESO fishing. Click.....wait....click....click again...wait...click............click again.......................................................wait..........wait........click. this is horrendously boring, and at 1 perfect roe per 300 fish not even remotely worth it, even with psijic bags and other junk you occasionally get. Ff15 has a decently fun fishing minigame even. Please tell me why ZOS views fishing as a stand in one spot and push one button over and over again like this is classic runescape or something. Simple solution, add a little mini game for fishing and change drops in proportion to the time it takes to get a fish. If I was in charge of this game and someone pitched fishing the way it is implemented in ESO I'd have to seriously consider why they're a designer on my game. Sorry if anyone thinks this is "Hating", but I'm not T Swift and I could care less if its insulting. The real insult is locking important legendary level recipes behind this dreadfully mundane mechanic.

You think base game fishing is bad? Can we talk about DLC fishing??

Outside of Summerset, where motifs were added as fishing drops only to assuage the intense outcry of PTS players at ZOS's original plan for the Pyandonean motifs to be exclusively available through single-pages in the crown crates (I digress...), there is minimal reason to catch all 12 fish in each of the DLC zones. At least for the base game -- as boring as it is -- you get a title, new dye colors, and an achievement furnishing. They included a 5 point achievement for me to catch 12 rare fish in Gold Coast, Hew's Bane, Clockwork City, Vvardenfell, Orsinium, and Imperial City... for what? To waste my bait/time?

Seriously the only reason to fish in DLC zones is if you're the the kind of person who wants to unlock every achievement for your personal satisfaction. Don't get me wrong, I try to platinum every PS4 game I can. I understand the impetus behind achievement hunting. But seriously...

This is a pet peeve of mine, if you couldn't tell.

It only helps you get more rare fish. If you just need plain fish for roe, it can be a detriment, and the fishing spot runs out faster.

I don't ask first, but if someone says they want to solo the spot I move on.

Zos could add a fishing guild enclave thing. They could Give you daily quests to catch certain amounts of fish from a zone for x reward. The reward could be a token used towards items from the fishing guild vendor. That could get people into helping others :)

Its all about sitting at a lake, drinking a beer and enjoying to do nothing. The fishing rod is just for being able to yell at ppl who want to talk to u "shush u r scaring the fish!". it would lose its point if there were to many ppl doing it.

Burnt out on fishing due to RIFT. Really wasn't fun, got sucked in due to being able to fish up stuff for housing, got real tired of it, not doing it again. And I certainly wouldn't do it just for achievements. I'm so not into that....

It needs to be a skill that you can level up to catch better fish, or increase your chances of getting the little prizes.
    Some ideas, maybe we could...

    Carve Fishing poles - Woodworking.
Craft lures - Jewelry or metal working.
Make bait - Provisioning or Alchemy.
Make hip waders - Clothier. (my mage hates standing in water getting her robe all wet.)
In addition to fishing poles how about nets or traps for salt water fishing - woodworking maybe.

It could be a fun skill.

You'd need to craft the net at a clothing station, then attach to the handle and hoop at the woodworking station! I wouldn't mind crafting stuff for fishing - to sell or give away to others. Not fishing any more.... don't even fish IRL any more (or hunt either - too old now.... no horses any more, need them for hunting around here, too old for more horses too.)

Fishing is not as popular as it could, or should be, because like almost everything Zenimax touches they totally get the grind/reward ratio wrong.

    It is that simple.

This game could be truly great if they scaled back on the grind-fest.

I would love to see fishing redone instead of stupid changes like getting rid of the overload bar which nobody asked for.
Fish achievements should be made account wide and there should be more rewards for fishing besides perfect roe and some motif that never drops.
