So, what does each race eat?

Hey everyone, just a nerdy lore question I was wondering we could discuss:

There's a ton of food in this game, but is there any way to determine which race eats what? Some of it is pretty obvious, like mead for nords and sujamma for dunmer, but a lot of it is pretty vague. Just for the sake of atmosphere and immersion is there any way of knowing what each race likes to eat and drink?

Well, aside from some random weed that they're inordinately fond of eating, the Bretons seem to have a fairly normal fantasy diet. Imperials have more Italian-esque food. The Bosmer brew bugs, and eat you.

The Altmer eat pretty fancy, as do the Bretons. This being of course as they're all about being elegant and all that jazz. As for everyone else, I suppose they'd eat what their environment produces for them to.

Khajiit are Carnivores (obviously), but not like the Bosmer. Khajiiti meals are typically pork, chicken, and other cattle all usually cooked somehow with Moon Sugar which is a Cultural seasoning, however Khajiit also have an affinity for Deserts and other sweets however the intensity of the sweetness is rather extreme to other races. A regular piece of Khajiiti cake to a Khajiit is delicious, but to an Elf or Man it'll probably make you sick and borderline diabetic.

Bosmer eat meat. Including you if you misbehave, though they won't really speak of it publicly. Eating a salad can be punishable by death. ;)

As for Argonians, here's a line from The Argonian Account which should give you some clue:

"He even let Scotti share his bucket of trodh, tiny little crunchy fish, he had bought from the villagers. Scotti would have preferred them cooked, or at any rate, dead, but Gemullus blithely explained that dead, cooked trodh are deadly poison."

Are there any specific examples of the food they eat in-game? I'm having trouble finding food and drink that are uniquely altmer or imperial.

Very next line in The Argonian Account:

""If I were where I was supposed to be," Scotti pouted, putting one of the wriggling little creatures in his mouth. "I could be having a roast, and some cheese, and a glass of wine."

Imperial food used to show up at Vet 1 and 5. Then, when Vet 10 recipes got added, they persisted. So, you're looking at lots of Italian sounding food and drink.

Altmer food would have been the first tier of Dominion recipes (level 1 through 15), though I honestly can't remember what was there.

Imperials get some Greek yogurt into their diet no doubt.

I think most of the races eat mostly the same things like meats, vegetables, breads, etc. The wood elves have their unique diets and the argonians, well

I think it's pretty vague because there are very few races with strict dietary requirements and a lot of interaction between cultures in Tamriel. So even though all races would have their own traditional foods you would be able to find them sold and eaten in other parts of the world too. It's not like people in High Rock will have never heard of mead or pasta because those are nord and imperial foods.

Come to think of it even with the war going on there is apparently a healthy trade in smuggling food between Highrock and the Summerset Isles, because just because you're trying to conquer the people who make it is no reason to go without your fancy foreign wine.

The only ones who have a really strict diet are the Bosmer who are not allowed to harm and certainly not to eat any plants in Valenwood because of the Green Pact, so they only eat meat and other animal products. But they will eat any kind of meat, up to and including other Bosmer and many insects. Technically they can eat plants from outside of Valenwood but I think many of them choose not to. (Although I imagine some would be quite keen to take the opportunity to try - like British people going to Amsterdam and making a point of smoking/eating weed just because it's illegal at home.)

As someone else said the khajiit mainly eat meat (although I don't think they're obligate carnivores like most real-life cats, I think they can and do eat plants too) and coat everything they eat in moonsugar. I think they can eat food without moonsugar but it just doesn't taste nice to them.

Argonians mostly eat fish, but I think that's just because there's plenty of fish in Black Marsh and not a lot else which is edible.

Other than that it's what they can farm, hunt or import.

Medieval food basically :) but you can also look at what lives and grows around the farms and in the nature in each region and get some inspiration from that. The diet also varies depending on season and during three banner war times some ingredients are hard to come by I imagine.

Wouldn't it be nifty if all the recipes we can find in game were a bit more explicit as to which race considers those foods "traditional"? I for one would live to have a bit more lore about each dish and drink to read (and all the recipes in my library to check up on as well)

Back at launch, this was kinda true.

Originally there were different recipes for each faction, so as you leveled, you could kinda see the recipes changing to reflect where you were on the map. You'd see the odd Bosmer recipe on Auridon, or (what I assume) was Argonian drinks in Stonefalls (they use fermented snake venom, apparently), but you could kind of sort out who was eating what.

Well based on the carnival quest in Grahtwood there are shalk beetles in Summerset, so maybe kwama as well?

So from what I've gathered the food and drink you
find in the game used to be structured differently? Is there any way to find a list and figure out which food corresponds to which race? Or does anyone just remember? The races I'm having the hardest time finding food for are the altmer redguards and imperials.

I'm having fun with this thread so far. Sure beats talking about the crown store.
