    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

I have to wonder what ZOS employees are thinking as they read through this thread?

ZOS EMP1 - The bosses say we have to sell 100k crown crates a month or a lot of us are going to lose our jobs :(.

ZOS EMP2 - Ohhh boy, judging by the response of the Crown Crates Are Being Released Thread we might need to start packing up our things :\.

Yeah, and they will be skinned alive, whipped, rolled in salt of our PvP tears, beheaded, and their intestines will be used by mad Zos Sheogorath as skip-rope. Maybe even transmuted into cheese with Wabbajack.

It seems more like you adapted it on purpose for your RPing, but hey, no judgement. It's not like you could have come up with something memorable that didn't have something to do with being cagit.

What does it matter no one is forcing you to buy them? .

It matters because if the crates do well and generate much revenue then the focus will move even more towards the sale of the crates and the exclusives in them rather than game content - and similar mischief.

Why spend so much time and effort and money making a complex and interesting game when you can just sell crates?

Or they could use the newly generated money to maybe hire additional folks for new content or fixing the existing. You don't know, I don't know. But it don't need to happen the way you think. *sigh*

Yes, they could, and no, we don't, and no, it don't. ZOS could be atypical. They could forge their own path, and use Crown Crates for good instead of evil.

I can imagine that alot of the 'haters' would be less hateful if they thought that these would never, ever, contain advantage or P2W items, and that proceeds from the Crates showed up in tons of new Content (zones, quests, dungeons, bosses, etc) and stuff that does not appear in the Store or Crates.

Given the industry history and trends, ZOS will have to work hard, if the plan is good instead of evil. This type of reassurance does not come easily to them, so, in the face of the normal stoic silence, evil is the most likely plan.

Don't be so grumpy, I'm just being silly because I'm having a good day :kissing_heart:

It is the truth, though. You can check the original thread on the PTS forums if you wish to see the green posts.

Silence changes nothing. Speaking up has the chance, whatever small, to change something.

The shift in development focus affects the health of the game and, therefore, everyone who plays it, no matter if they buy crates or not. This was already explained extensively.

  • BurningLobster
Okay, so basing this on some numbers I saw tossed around recently... it's all abstract and subject to change, but I wanna demonstrate WHY the Crown Crates are going into the game, for the sake of those who seem willfully obtuse. For the sake of the argument I am making, I am going to be operating on a lot of assumptions and abstractions that might not be 100% accurate, but even if I'm off, my point should still stand.

If we are playing the odds that were on the PTS, then it takes roughly 40K in Crowns to guarantee the mount you want. Currently, a mount will cost you about 2K in crowns, depending on the mount. So, if one person in ten decides they MUST HAVE that mount, ZOS would have to sell 20 people that same mount to have it work out to the same level of profit. So, even if 18 out of 19 players decide they won't buy any crown crates, ZOS will still make more money off of the Crown Crates than they would have otherwise.

That means, even if you would have sold 10 mounts at the old rate, you'll double your overall income by selling 1! From a marketing standpoint, that's brilliant. Not only that, but in order to entice MORE people into taking the chance, they are going to put more desirable items into those boxes than you might otherwise be able to find. For example, the whole Atronoch style is one that you can only get through the boxes.

You wanna play a badass summoner who forges their own mount from the very storms of Oblivion? Pay me.

You want some kick ass idle animations that are better than anything else? Pay me!

You want that rare mount that you missed being for sale? PAY ME!!!

    And so it goes...

Give it time, and you'll see exclusive costumes in the crates. They will start to add in weapon and armor skins, rather than putting in a proper polymorph system... so all those people out there wanting one will then be forced into a Devil's Bargain. What about different forms for your Sorcerer pet? Or how about a "dark light" theme for the Templar? All of these sorts of things will come down the pipe, I would wager... because all it takes is 1 in 20 who wants it. if it's 1 in 15, they just turned a healthy profit.

ZOS... I'm not gonna stop playing just yet, as I am curious as to what you are doing with housing, but I'm also looking for another game to play. I no longer feel like this is a game that I want to commit to long-term, but has become a hold-over until "the next thing". That happened because you chose to put exploitative systems in place. That happened because you made me feel like you are going to put your focus into cynical cash-grabs as opposed to creating a quality product that is worth the price of admission. You aren't making a game any longer, you are making a market driven product that happens to be a game... and that's gonna change everything, over time. I hope I'm wrong... but I hoped with SWTOR and here I am... I wonder where I'll end up next?

Keeping production cycles in mind I will reserve judgment until the DLC following the next one (guessing here not really knowing schedule).

Until then I will enjoy the game, because when I am in the game I don't think about crates. I do have the advantage of not having seen everything yet. I've got mudcrabs to fry and skeevers to slice.

Also really looking forward to housing.

Oh khajiit is just as she always was yes. The ears and paws and tail all remain. The grubby pale fur is still full of small pets.

Just that sometimes this one if she quotes the song lyrics or the patch notes and they are not written as this one would write them then this one she must stick to the original text yes.

And khajiit she can speak with many voices. This one she is not just a one dimensional drunk and thief - no sometimes this one she also likes to eat too much also.

First let me say I agree, Second let me say I'm for the crown crates. Now that that's out of the way I would like to talk about the part of your post that says you are no longer making a game but a market driven product? You do know all game are a market driven product right? It's like the whole point companies make games is to bank out get rich.

I have to agree, a lot of people forget this is a business.

Although the majority on this thread do realise this, this is the main point of the negativity, there are right ways to do business and there are wrong ways, there are fair ways to do business and there are scummy ways.

These cash grab, scam Crown Crates and the way they are being implemented fall very deeply into the latter

The game was marketed as an MMO, sub-free game with options to buy DLC and items in the Store. That's now changed completely.

I'm excited for housing to but I wonder if they will put the real fancy houses inside these scram crates? For those like myself who do not have a wealthy income of in game gold.

    Well give them ideas! lol

I can see stuff for the houses ending up in the store and the crates... crafting motifs for special furniture even. The houses themselves ... well never say never but I would think it less likely.

I will argue that to the hilt, but I can offer no hard evidence to the contrary, as it's all based on a nebulous idea of direction and intention. We are mostly just talking for the sake of sharing ideas, at this point. I hope we can both understand that while we discuss things.

A great number of games have been made in the MMO genre that were not market driven products, but games first. Everquest, for the longest time, resisted any marketization, as an example. Yes, games are meant to be appealing, but many of the older MMO's were not made to make money as much as they were made to be good games. As time went on, that philosophy permeated their choices. They didn't make an expansion that gave everyone a mount, even though everyone WANTED one... either the content itself was enough to sell it or it was not.

Other examples include; Ultima Online, Asheron's Call and Dark Age of Camelot. Even WoW up to and including Burning Crusade could be a part of this list. These were games made with the idea of being "fun" and challenging... where not everyone in the community could have the most kick-ass gear, but everyone could have something cool. These were games that were built and maintained by people who wanted others to have fun... not spend money. It could be due to the fact that cash-shops, as we understand them, were not a part of their game... but that simply highlights the exact problem I'm talking about.

Within any company, there is going to be a hierarchy of priorities. Eventually, any company that grows sufficiently large enough will place profit as their highest priority. However... this misses the point I'm trying to make. When profit isn't the RESULT of the effort, but the AIM of the effort, that alters the design philosophy of the people creating the product. A "real world" analogy that comes to mind (imperfect though the thought may be) is "In-N-Out" compared to "McDonalds". Where one is unarguably more profitable and more successful, the other is unarguably a higher quality of product. Both are making much the same thing with radically different philosophies in mind, resulting in very different products for the end consumer.

    Any thoughts on this?

When I first started playing it was marketed sub only with free dlc, point I'm making is this game change a lot in 2.5 years and will keep changing but it's still the same game at the end of the day

Sorry, but that's not entirely true.

It is an MMO with optional subscription for perks and DLC access (although you can access the base game without a sub and no further content) with crown store purchases as an option.

Everything there is still true. The crates are an optional crown store purchase if you wish to buy them.

I'm not for the crates at all and will not buy a single one, but the spade is still a spade.

The significant difference is that now there are things in Tamriel that can only be obtained by gambling.

Before all could be obtained either by completing a task or quest in Tamriel or by making a direct purchase.

This one she would have no issue with an honest transaction where you know what you buy yes - the crates they are not that.

If Tamriel is free to enter or you pay a monthly fee or you have choice of levels of access - khajiit has no issue with that also.

The payment up front for the unknown benefit is the dividing line.
