MMOs actually survive by retaining players. There's nothing about the new feature that keeps players who have already played through all those areas and content, who have already leveled, perhaps multiple alts even, who just want SOMETHING new.
@camilla_noctis
Maybe this doesn't keep you around because it does keep me.
I don't enjoy having to do 100's of quests which become more and more meaningless each time I play on an alt. Changing it so the quests and adventures are always at level anywhere "keeps" me interested.
Maybe this game is changing and won't be to your liking is all

Big announcement! 7 Million people in 2.5 years have made an account with us!
Big Announcement! We launched a new DLC 2 weeks ago! Finish it's main story in 3 hours ! Get quests to go to random places and kill 3 innocent people for 300 gold! Then get another one to do the same! Then go to 1 of 3 possible locations to do a buggy heist sacrament for another 300 gold and a green deconstructable item ! Do Sanctum Ophidia again! But with some monsters in there with a bit more health! And some parts a little buggier than they used to be!
By the way nothing new coming anytime soon.

Of course there will be.But when ?
This was their place for the upcoming big announcements and as there was nothing about any new content, I wont be holding my breath. The 3 developers left and the 37 unpaid interns on work experience will all be working flat out on One Tamriel and whatever is coming to the crown store.

I don't play alts, that's not something everyone does. Then there's my partner, who has an alt of each class at max level. Still doesn't change anything for her either.

No, everyone I do something with in the game is either: guildies who each has at least one max character, or PUGS/strangers for dungeons, which there isn't a shortage of to find. Maybe a guildie might now be able to run with a different character/class. But if there's nothing new to keep me coming back and subscribing, then we get a reversed situation.
It just seems like the "newbie/altoholic feature", which may greatly benefit certain particular cases, but big announcements and updates should have something for everyone ideally.

And many have expressed how the DLC's haven't been sufficient. The main story can be done in a few days. I didn't try to rush it, I simply did it when I had time and because it was fun. I leisurely did the other zone quests thereafter, and now it's already over. Now what? I guess I wait for motifs to be added to rewards. So yeah, there was a DLC, it was too short.Wish that was addressed as well. I'm not saying this feature shouldn't be implemented. I'm saying there are other issues, related to content, that many would prefer to address.

This is still like spending two years writing a book, handing it to your editor, and getting a note back that while nothing's really changed, instead of the war epic you sent her, it's going to be repackaged as a romantic comedy because people like romantic comedies and thus the book will be more profitable.
And you're like, well what about all the really unromantic scenes where lots of people die?
And she replies, nobody's going to read long enough to see the inconsistencies in theme. I just want the book to sell. And if people don't like it as a romantic comedy, they'll just call it a war epic.
And you're like, but it already is.
And she's like, but not to everyone.
NewBlacksmurf wrote: »Titansteele wrote: »ZOS have mentioned "business intelligence" more than once over the years that I have been following this game. It has used to justify quite a few things in the past.
The problem with "big data" is that age old question ..... at which point does data become information? In other words how is the data turned into something useful. Example? Oh go on then ........
Not everything in this example is fact, it was my interpretation of statements made and I am not claiming any of it is actual fact.
So WGT got nerfed, big data played a part in that call being made. Big data said that X amount of people did not not finish the runs they started. Someone at ZOS made a target that said we want Y% of runs completed and because it currently is below that value it needs to be belted ..... hard ........... with thy stick of nerfydom.
So Big data provided fact, it says out of X runs Y fail to finish. What it does not say is why? Was it too hard? Was it too long? Was it not fun? Was the players dinner ready? Was the player offered sex and that was a much more attractive offer than "get out the red stupid" comments from guild mates?
How is this relevant?
I have a feeling big data drove this change and I am not sure if the data has been successfully turned into information to enable sensible decisions on this one. For me, the jury is out and time will tell.
I do not envy this job at ZoS, where I think I would do a fantastic job at it I know it is not an easy one. I truely hope you made the right one Matt.
@Titansteele
I think you're going off on a tangent because the data in your comment could be based on group who had X amount of wipes or deaths before the group broke up rather than the example you made.
While I often do not agree with ZOS and their decisions or how they implement good decisions, I don't perceive they are dumb. Your comment suggests they don't know how to use data intelligently. I disagree there...I think their lack of playing the game with us on live servers as regular ppl, have negative impacts in their decision making.
Some do play tho and this can hurt more than it helps. Playing is just a way for me to tell my perspective but in the end, it's not due to stupidity or using data wrong. It seems to often boil down to devs wanting the game to work and be played like X....but players not following that path and causing the devs design to often be flawed.

The lack of concrete details on how it's going to work is what's bothering people. Right now it's implemented on a smaller scale with the DLC zones, now what's to stop me from finishing a starting zone and wandering to what used to be a level 40-50 zone and doing all of the story missions, completely skipping the majority of the story content up to that point? The quests are currently set up in sequential order, not like Skyrim where you can wander around and do them when you feel like it. One quest send you to the next zone and so on and so forth. This breaks that.
Which makes more sense. Easy to include an opt out there, weirder to make you go back again.Pendrillion wrote: »Fun fact is that they force start you in the original starter zones again. There must be something in the making, which works around the linearity.
Been lobbying for this for a while. Hoping to see repeatable quests.Pendrillion wrote: »In any case... there are precedents to this system. Seeing the original story as "campaign1" Tying together the stories of the factions. And then add new content to the old zones (which is what I am rooting for) Aside from DLC that increase Tamriel with new lands.
Maybe with battle-levelling going everywhere, ZOS will be able to implement an actual difficulty slider, instead of a figurative one.I hate this, particularly the battle-level scaling. I knew it was coming, but for me it will ruin the game.
Now - except for DLC areas - I can adjust my challenge based on where I go and what I want to do.
The built in "difficulty adjust slider" is going to be removed.
Progression is going away, levels are going away, variations in difficulty are going away.
Then when they make it increasingly easy, everyone will complain and argue over the exact challenge they want, when once upon a time we had a full range of difficulty options.
