Since besides a gamer, I'm also a writer, on some level I look at it not as 'creating' the character but sort of just opening up to possibilities and "meeting" them.

On the other hand that could be a side-effect of too much caffeine...

I was just going to post that for some players they are essentially writing their own story with their character, and they won't try to pick something that represents them, or something they necessarily like. For other people, they want to project themselves into the story/fantasy. Both are great ways to enjoy games, and I think many players do a little of column A, little of column B...

Yeah, I have to agree. But that is only because some people tend to be extremely judgemental and superficial. I mean, you really think you can know someone by their comments about a video game?

I understand how male chauvinistic this question might appear. I´ll explain myself:
I have been playing RPG games for a long time, and since ever I tryed to imagine myself in that fantastic world. So now that it is possible, I try to make my character somhow similar to me. I have seen people in the game with big boobs and that, but I have also seen "normal" people. I wonder how common is that a person just wants to be himself in game (but with powers...).
I see a lot of girls in the game, and lets face it: I know a lot of girls play video games, but that is a minority compared to the amount of men that does, particularly in games like ESO or other RPGs. So I though asking this question would give me an answer. And it did: most people wants to be someone else in-game, or, they just don´t feel related with the character as I do (and that´s perfectly fine - I just wanted to know).
Also, I pay a lot of attention to the estethics of other characters. Some are a real works of art. It is interesting to know if behind it, there is a girl or a man. Their art expressions tend to be different.
Finally, I just wanted to know more or less the percentage of players that are men/girls. Most girls I know only play Candy Crash-like games.
And by the way, I tried, but I was not able to make a poll about this.
    Thanks for the answers!

The big boobs thing I'm going to guess will be mostly played by guys. Women players who want the attention may also pick that, and also be the types who openly "advertise" they are female IRL.

The works of art could go both ways. I saw a really striking albino Argonian in Vulkhel Guard bank the other night. It also had a very amusing name that matched it perfectly. Though I didn't really contemplate if a male or female was playing it.

Theres no need for a psychological study. Its kind of evident why male players enjoy playing female characters. One of the most common reasons will be something nice to look at while you play. Of course their will be outliers that do it because theyre creepers, others will do it because others give them things. But theres nothing particularly mind blowing about it.

Ive got two male characters and a female character. For me the female character was just to do something different. Its quickly becoming one of my favorite characters but thats because its a class that in past MMOs Ive typically taken up.

Ok, so... I'm not sure many female players who play male characters would say, "It's obvious why I want to play a male-- so nice to look at ooolalaa." I guess I would say that response is creepy in that you're sexualizing a cartoony thingy on your screen. lol

It's mostly the usual reasons, but some stories are quite interesting. I have a transgender friend for whom RPGs were both escapism and an eye-opening experience where she could create her character the way she unconsciously wanted to be; her "correct" alter ego in Tamriel, as it were. It helped her come to terms with the situation.

It's nice to think how therapeutic video games can be sometimes. I knew a guy who played to keep his mind clear after the death of his father. It's been useful for me too - in overcoming my massive performance anxiety (just one more reason why I normally dislike multiplayer). Especially with my main being a tank, so naturally falling into the unofficial group leader position.

Alright guys, I think is only fair to give you my conclussions about this thread (very rough):

Obs1: About 50% of males have female characters
Obs2: About 60% of the people in Tamriel are girl characters
    Obs3: a large etc....

    Very rough conclussions:

About 30% of Tamriel people are actually girls
About 25% of people identify with their character
About 70% of people play this in third person perspective

    Other rougher conclusions:

About 25% of males in this thread want to be girls
About 90% of girls in this thread think I´m creepy
About 90% of the males that want to be girls think I´m creepy as well
About 90% of the males in this thread that don´t want to be girls are as creepy as I am
About 50% of Tamriel people are roughly half of it.

    Now that´s judging!

I was thinking about this just last night when I stumbled on a box of old games while I was moving some stuff around. 3 of those games were old Tomb Raider games, which were the first "person simulation" games I ever played, as well as the first game franchise that I ever played repeatedly. I would wait for new Tomb Raider games. I was mad when they picked Angelina Jolie to play Lara Croft in the movies because she didn't have brown eyes! So for me, the idea of playing a game using a female character is nothing new, and in fact goes back to some of my earliest experiences with "person simulation" games like all MMOs and RPGs are.

    Just my 2 cents.

Yeah. i wonder if people have the same problems with fixed gender action or actiom RPG games .The total freedom of gender/class choice is a somewhat newish development and it is not even now universal. If one would limit oneself to only playing games representing character similar to themselves IRL it would be quite restrictive.

Come to think of it one of the more recent and better games I played involved playing a 11year old girl fighting to survive the zombie apocalypse...

    Damn I am creepy.

I like to make my main look like me, and other than being short, and a Bosmer, she mostly does. But they have to do something about the lighting in character creation, because I swear my boobs looked smaller in creation then they do in the game, lol. I've seen others with this complaint.

I am female and I mostly play guy characters for every game ever since I started. I have some girl chars but none are ever my mains. I just like looking at my male chars and dressing them up. :D I even RP as a guy, but if it starts to get into RL stuff I am completely honest. I've had girls develope RL crushes on my RP chars and I'd gently deny them. I've had people in vent mistake my voice for a young guy and tentively ask what my gender was. I've had people I did raids with tell me its 'weird' and 'awkward' to learn my male char is a girl irl (what? 90% of the guild is guys playing girls! LOL.) Also, I've never been interested in online relationships. I am in a happy IRL relationship with a great guy for 8 years. I don't see what the big deal is what gender you play.
