So i'm proud to say I do actually look like my DK.

Hahah, nice. While I am not "looking" (like most ? people who play mmos), I do appreciate humorous/witty men in the game. Have to say it's a bit hard to find what with the plethora of "frat boy conversations" going on. But intelligent guys are just so cool. So are the women, of course, but they seem to be even harder to find than guys, possibly because they don't readily (and not saying they should) identify themselves as women. :-)

Also, back to the top for the "creepy derp thread." lol

I've got such a variety of characters: all races, all classes, both sexes, each using a different combination of gear. Maybe part of it comes from years and years of DMing (or GMing depending on the game) pen and paper RPGs. Or maybe it has to do with all of the plays I used to act in when I was in school, and all the theatre sports I used to do. They're characters that I play - they have nothing at all to do with who I am, they have everything to do with whether I have a concept for a character that I find interesting.

I think we are on different parts of the same continuum. I don't say my characters are ever "me" but in part they are "me" that I could be ... if I happened to be born in Tamriel ... or whatever. In the same way that in order to write a character in a story I have to be able on some level to get into that head space.

And with my latest old lady orc character, I'm having a delightful time chastising the all-too-numerous young whippersnappers in the game.

Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.

    Thread=fun.
I was thinking about this, since I do like the RP aspect: it is very hard for me, as a RPer, to have a character do something morally I would never do. I don't even like stealing in the game, but do it in buildings with no people to get recipes and supplies slightly faster. However, I do push myself to have some characters in a game do something completely anathema to me as a person. Gender is important to me for backstory, as are the character's haircut, scars on the face, body type, etc., but nowhere near as much as the actions of the character. When thinking about this, gender doesn't seem near as important to me as how I play the moral compass in the game. Sure wish these kinds of games still had alignment, and that you could affect it (as a score) through your actions.
I'm not sure if this relates to your gender discussion here, but it was where my mind went to when thinking about it.

Seriously, though: I once had a date ask to use my computer to check their e-mail. I knew it wouldn't last when they asked: "Hey, why does your mouse have buttons on the side ..."
@IrishGirlGamer the irony in this never ceases to amaze me...even more so now with the vast push towards touch screens... (Used to get yelled at for putting your hands on the screen, now it's encouraged.)

Regarding the second part, gotta have good hands, or what's the point? (You know, for shuffling cards and stuff :| )

And what did he possibly need to check that was more pressing than you? (Sounds like you made a good call.)

Marriage, yes, sex no. You can imagine it I suppose but ESO does not depict it in even the mildest PG13 way. And that is probably best considering the kind of attention it would attract.

I think marriage was a holdover from previous games like Skyrim where your character could get married and that actually gave you some benefits (depending on who you married) and additional quests involving your husband or wife and adopted children.

Wow, I think I never had so many replies in a thread that I started.
I understand how male chauvinistic this question might appear. I´ll explain myself:
I have been playing RPG games for a long time, and since ever I tryed to imagine myself in that fantastic world. So now that it is possible, I try to make my character somhow similar to me. I have seen people in the game with big boobs and that, but I have also seen "normal" people. I wonder how common is that a person just wants to be himself in game (but with powers...).
I see a lot of girls in the game, and lets face it: I know a lot of girls play video games, but that is a minority compared to the amount of men that does, particularly in games like ESO or other RPGs. So I though asking this question would give me an answer. And it did: most people wants to be someone else in-game, or, they just don´t feel related with the character as I do (and that´s perfectly fine - I just wanted to know).
Also, I pay a lot of attention to the estethics of other characters. Some are a real works of art. It is interesting to know if behind it, there is a girl or a man. Their art expressions tend to be different.
Finally, I just wanted to know more or less the percentage of players that are men/girls. Most girls I know only play Candy Crash-like games.
And by the way, I tried, but I was not able to make a poll about this.
    Thanks for the answers!

Actually, RPGs are one of the most gender-equal genres. Women make up nearly half of all players. MMOs have a lower percentage of women, only about a third, but even at this number meeting women in the game shouldn't be anything unusual. Most of us consider it obvious.

Well, if you need to be so especiphic I guess I was asking not a direct question, but one that I can compare with my experience online in order to get the answers I wanted:
    Obs1: I see a lot of women
    Obs2: most players are men
My "real" question: do you relate to your character?
if Obs2 is wrong (many girls playing) then the answer is YES. Since Obs2 appears to be wrong (based on the actual OP answers - many men playing as girls) then the answer is NO.

And additionally, I could answer my other two questions with the same thread (the design part and the gender part). Cheers.

I have girls that are friends that play all kinds of games. Destiny, ESO, Halo, and all kind of games. I also know a ton of guys that play Candy crush style games. I don't think it's a fair assessment to think most "girl gamers" play Candy crush style games. A gamer is a gamer is a gamer no mater what gender they happen to be.

You're creating a character. That doesn't mean it has to be a direct representation of yourself. Personally I try and think about what race and gender may suit the class. Etc. I'd more than likely create a male Warrior or Cleric, a female Assassin or Healer, as an example,

If you start role playing as the opposite gender then you might want to take a break though. :p

I find that playing the "opposite gender" lets me get a look at the subtle assumptions I'm making about "how they should be/are" and can be very interesting in terms of self-revelation.

It was just an example, not a rule. In a world as multi cultural as ours there's always going to be differences.

Funnily enough when I was in basic training with the army, two of the three Corporals that ran the training were women. They sure were big girls mind, and they certainly weren't Elves. :D

Since besides a gamer, I'm also a writer, on some level I look at it not as 'creating' the character but sort of just opening up to possibilities and "meeting" them.

On the other hand that could be a side-effect of too much caffeine...

Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.

Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis
