The curation kind of destroys the social aspect of fishing. The reason to bring more people was simply to socialize as you pulled up duplicates (and to increase odds but that's less important with buffs and unimportant with curation). Curation takes the time spent from few hours to as low as 15 minutes, depending on the zone/type of fish. The fishing mechanic is not engaging. So, I see a lot less people doing it as the social engagement aspect dies out. At first they'll probably be a spike of interest as the long term players grab up their master angler titles. Once that dies out though, I imagine the activity will as well as it becomes less social.

Curation would take the fun out of fishing. It's an activity that requires patience. And it's optional if you don't enjoy it. Occasional events like this one are welcome, but I wouldn't want to see curation permanent.

But...can't you socialize either way? What's the difference between fishing on your own and fishing with others? I mean aside from the mechanics of course. Plus there's the fact that every couple of seconds you have to Interrupt what you're typing to reel in. That might not have been a big deal in the past, when you could just get right back to what you were saying afterward, but with the chat bug that deletes your input if you click off it or change tabs...it's kind of hard to really type until the Hole dries up.

I'm not a fan of "if you don't like it then ignore it" arguments, because the thing is, people would often like to enjoy things but certain pain points keep them from being able to. For me, it's the fact that you can spend 10 hours at one Hole for a one specific Fish, or you can spend 10 minutes and get it. That's not having patience, it's putting up with cruddy RNG.

Curated Fish doesn't remove RNG. It makes the RNG more reasonable. You can still wind up fishing for an hour and get only a couple of fish in a zone because you keep hooking white fish over and over and over and over. People would still be putting time into it, it would just free up time for people to be able to do things they want rather than sacrifice all that time to a single activity.

Also fun is subjective; I don't see how standing at a splishy spot and hitting E at it every few seconds until it dries up and you have to hunt for another one to repeat the process is fun. That's just how I see it, tho. If others think it's fun that's cool for them, but I genuinely don't see how making something less frustrating and time-consuming makes it less fun.

But in an MMO, you have to consider that other people like it exactly as it is, and if the activity were to be changed to your liking, then they would like it less. There are activities I don't do in ESO because of pain points, but I'm aware that if the activity were to change to please me, it would turn off other players who currently enjoy it. So I just don't do those activities or only do them if the rewards are something I really, really want. Fortunately, fishing doesn't offer much in rewards. It's more for the satisfaction of getting it done, which is why making it even easier than it already is would ruin it for me.

As you said yourself, fun is subjective. For me, curated RNG would make fishing too easy and there'd be no satisfaction when you finally get a fish you want. While I loved getting IC done because it would have been a pain otherwise in a PvP area, I wouldn't want fishing to be like that all the time.

I've completed all the fishing achievements, and fishing is one of the easier activities. I never once had to fish for hours and hours in a zone. If you slot the right champion nodes, eat the right food, and get Sharp's perk (though he's optional -I didn't have him when I did the master angler title), fishing is already really easy compared to other RNG activities. Bring a friend or two along and it's even easier. Making it even easier by curating rare fish would make it completely meaningless and I'd rather they just removed it from the game in that case.

I say its nice to clear the zones with just one type of fishing holes, Coldharbor is the obvious one as needed for master angler.
But also clockwork city and the deadlands has only foul water, also Northern Elsweir only have rivers.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Not changing something because there are people who like things how they are means nothing in an MMO would ever change, for better or for worse. Of course there are people who won't be happy with any given change, people who prefer certain things to remain a certain way.

If I may ask, can you not still fish for fun even after getting the achieves? Once you get everything in a certain zone, curation no longer applies. You'd be back to having completely random drops again, or at least, that's how it should work.

Like I said, not everyone has access to Companions for Sharp. Not everyone has the recipe for the Fish Bowl, since not everyone has access to Summerset and short of buying Waterlogged Satchels from people, there's no other way to get it. Sure, you can buy the drink from people too, but that can quickly start getting expensive depending on how many you need. Fishing with friends is great if you can find anyone who wants to spend the time doing it with you, or have a free guild slot to join a fishing guild. And plenty of people play the game solo either way.

It's not gonna be a big deal for me since I plan on getting the achieves for the Dyes and Furniture during the event. I can get Sharp, I just keep forgetting to grab him. I can buy a stupid number of the drinks since I sell a bunch of things on a regular basis. There are droves of people at basically every hole that I've seen so far, but idk if the fishing with others bonus only counts if you're grouped with them or not. I just think it would be nice for other people to not have to go through a bunch of hoops to cut down on RNG but still have the chance that RNG will heck you over.

Of course. I was pointing out that if fishing changes to please you, it will stop pleasing some players who like it the way it is.
If I may ask, can you not still fish for fun even after getting the achieves?

For me, the achievements are the fun part. Unfortunately fishing doesn't offer much else with its current implementation. You can fish some items and leads, but beyond that, there isn't much more to it. So the answer for me is no.
I just think it would be nice for other people to not have to go through a bunch of hoops to cut down on RNG but still have the chance that RNG will heck you over.

I'm not a fan of the punishing RNG in this game. Fortunately, the RNG for fishing isn't all that bad, and you have several ways you can improve on it. That's not true for things like antiquities leads and other drops. Since there are ways to improve your odds with fishing, I don't think curation is necessary.

Anyway, we both fish for different reasons, I guess. I just wanted to point out that fishing is pretty easy already, and some of us like it the way it is. As you said, it's subjective. I disagree with your suggestion, is all.

Nicely put. Generally I can’t recall many posts of any requesting fishing changes until recently. The fact that most players either are okay with it or just avoid it outweighs the benefit of possibly making some new players more happy with it. The keyword there is “possibly”. We never know what they will actually implement and it could be far worse than what we have - like jabs.

I re-watched Deep Space Nine in its entirety while working on the achievement that a whole bunch of people are getting in two days now.

I'm happy for them, but I sure wish I could get a new title: "Got Master Angler in 2017."

Don't linked achievements include dates so you sort of do.

I was happy to get Master Angler and all the things that come along with it, but I'll be honest I don't think I will use the title as it doesn't mean the same to me as for someone who grounded it out when it was difficult

Well, Sharp and one of my character’s fishing expeditions drew to a close today with my character getting every Master Angler achievement in the game thanks to this event and curated fishing!

    i4hd7hoq9vlq.jpeg

If it wasn’t for curated fishing, I would’ve never tried this, and it would have stayed on my bucket list as a huge overwhelming thing I was dreading to do. As it was, with curated fishing, it was easier to manage, but I still feel like it was an achievement for me because the achievements are something I always wanted. Getting it at a time when curated fishing made it easier does not make it feel like less of an achievement for me. If new Master Angler achievements are added with new zones slowly over time, I might even do them in the moment, so they will never build up and feel so overwhelming again. I think I can manage one zone without a curated fishing if I have to, maybe.

Some things I noticed while working on this, wet gunny sacks do not stack and can build up quickly in your inventory, sometimes causing you to miss out looting a rare fish. If you free up space in your inventory and the hole is still there, the fish will be waiting for you on your next cast even if other players are fishing. The only threat is the hole disappearing before you can get back to it.

Also, the rare fish and common fish can build up in your inventory too before you realize it, so it’s best to check your inventory often to make sure you have space.

The CP active that adds time to food buffs works with the Artaeum fish food too, it changed my Lure Allure buff from two hours to 2.5 hours.

Out of all the zones, Summerset was the hardest due to the scarcity of foul fishing spots. I finally had to leave it for last, so when I went back to it, I only had to catch four fish in the game to have every Master Angler achievement. At first, my character was bouncing around to all the possible spawn points and never finding anything. What finally worked for me since I have multiple characters that I stationed one of my characters at each potential spawn point so I could log in and out until I finally found one. What made it a little more difficult for me is that I had a particular character I wanted to get the achievement with so when I did finally find one I would quickly log off of that character, log onto the one I wanted the achievement on, and try to get to that spot as fast as possible. That’s totally on me though.

All in all, I ended up using 9 of the Artaeum food and catching 1,400 fish, and after fileting them ended up with 13 Perfect Roe. And I saw some really interesting places in Tamriel I’ve never seen before. For example, one fishing spot in Murkmire had this little blue frog that would pop up out of the fishing spot and belch blue flames. And there was this little boat near a larger ship out at sea that had two fishing spots beside it, but you can’t reach it because of Slaughterfish. I tried because I thought it would be fun fishing from the little boat.

    x2lgikapfvz2.jpeg

One zone I was in, I think it might have been the Reach, had a huge bird that flew over and grabbed something out of the water and flew on by while I was fishing. And in my opinion, the two zones with the best atmospheric music were Galen and Western Skyrim. I was almost disappointed to get Master Angler in those zones because I had to move onto the next zone.

In closing, I have to say that while some people complain a lot about this or that system, ESO still has some of the most beautiful graphics and music of any MMO on the market, something remarkable for a 10+ year-old game. Sometimes I think the beauty of the world gets lost when people are talking about ESO‘s problems, but it is always there waiting in the background to be rediscovered. 😊

Spot on post about why I enjoy fishing. While in Vvardenfell I saw some silt stiders way off the coast just walking along in the water. I found a spot somewhere in a base game zone that had a lot of torchbugs near the water, and it was after sunset. Just beautiful. I can’t remember where it was, I hope I took a screen snapshot of it. I think it was High Isle that had some marine creatures similar to dolphins swimming near the shore and jumping out of the water. Sometimes I like just seeing the sun move through the sky and the colors change as I am fishing.

    Congrats on your achievement!

Oh. I missed this before but I just want to say that since I'm on console, we'd be using voice chat. Voice chat is built into console so you don't have to use a third party app for that. You can just join guild chat and new people can come in and out.

And no, nobody's waiting around for groups of people for a 15 minute task. A lot of these social activities are things that take enough time to actually get to hang out and aren't too difficult. It's nice to check off a task with others sometimes. Current fishing works well for that.

I kind of wish PC had voice chat, with how annoying the current chat bug is...it's especially annoying trying to talk to people while fishing since you never know if you're going to have time between cast and reel to get a whole sentence out, so you have to wait between casts to type.

The takeaway broth is a rare drop, might be easier to buy. Hissmir Fish-Eye Rye doesn't drop from fishing. It comes from the New Life festival.

The purple provisioning recipe with Arteaum in the name is the one that drops there, sorry I forget the full name. It’s the one you want and it says something about fish being drawn to you.

I stopped using Master Angler title many years ago in favor of difficult dungeon HM title. Then we got food which helps with fishing, then we got CP for fishing, and companion's perk... This is all very helpful and appreciated, but I personally would not use the angler's title nowadays :( For other people Master Angler might still have meaning. After all, I heard that the particular dungeon title got easier to unlock nowadays, but I still use it because it means alot to me and reminds me of good days :'(

But I still hope that there might be some cool furnishings/cosmetics added to fishing achievements retroactively, so thanks to the event I filled missing fish lists in many DLC zones.

I never thought about finishing IC angler, and I was not even sure that it is part of curated zones during the event  I just went there to check this, and was pleasantly surprised <3 Very grateful for this event!

We all finished our collections there during this unexpected fishing session.

I remember finishing IC angler achievement back in the day. Fishing underneath the flag as allies chased enemy players past me, one turned back and called me a legend.

This weekend I completed my last angler achievement after waiting 40 minutes for one of the only foul water spots in Summerset to spawn. With literally every possible bonus, I caught the single remaing fish I needed. Part of me is happy to have everything completed, while another part of me is sad to have no more fish to conquer.

I got all my angler achievements done during this event (thank you, ZOS!) and recently learned of two achievements, one in Wrothgar and one in Apocrypha involving catching a single named fish. Have you done those?

I already had the Wrothgar one , I will have to check on the Apocrypha one.

Edit: I don't have it, but looks like it's not curated either. I'll something to hunt at a later date.

Yes, and they're fun as far as fishing goes, especially the Apocrypha one. But, I won't give more details than that. The Wrothgar just requires talking to an an NPC than fishing near them. You can do a broad area near them so I don't mean literally right next to them, but the shore they're at.
