Let's try not to be so negative folks. Instead of bashing the poor creature let us think how we can put it to good use.
I propose adding a perk of gathering multiple surveys in one go. Just think about it: you put your stack of 30+ alchemical surveys in your inventory, gallop on this horse to the location, whack, whack, whack, and all the materials are in your inventory/craft bag right away.

There was a spell focus for Blades that quite literally spawned glowing conjured swords in a ring around you that faced outward and shot out, that would have not looked anywhere near as bad as this.
