Two buffs that could be nice for Templars

A couple of days ago I believe someone on these forums mentioned that Major Courage would fit the Templar thematically and I definitely agree. That got me thinking – the Heroism buff also sounds like it would suit a paladin-like class such as the Templar.

I realize Major Courage might be too strong of a buff, but I think Minor Courage and/or Minor Heroism could be added to its kit without making it OP. (Seeing as the Arcanist has access to both buffs too.)

The buffs could for example be added to the following skills and/or passives:

Option 1
  • Cleansing Ritual and Extended Ritual grant Minor Heroism to the caster and all allies standing in the area
  • Ritual of Retribution grants Minor Courage to the caster and all allies standing in the area
Option 2
  • Minor Heroism is added to Restoring Aura and its morphs
  • Cleansing Ritual and its morphs grant Minor Courage to the caster and all allies standing in the area
Option 3
  • Minor Courage is added to the Sacred Ground passive
  • Cleansing Ritual and its morphs grant Minor Heroism to to the caster and all allies standing in the area
Option 4
  • Radial Sweep and its morphs grant Major Courage (I couldn't help myself) for the duration of the DOT
  • Solar Flare and its morphs grant Minor Heroism
So is it just me, or do you also think it would be nice if one or both of these buffs would be added to the Templar's skills?

Edit: Oops, I listed Minor Courage twice in 'Option 1'.

Sry but AoE minor heroism with ritual would be too insane, when the buff otherwise is only available on a few skills.

Courage on a class with several buffs to spelldamage also would be very strong. So I suggest it being tied to something, that isnt up at all times (especially major courage).

Templar already has it's own unique version of Heroism (Prism). I would be more in favor of buffing that passive before dipping Templar into powerful buffs. I would also argue that I don't think any class should natively have access to Heroism... we are all heroes of our own story.

Courage is interesting I suppose. It would need to be heavily restricted in some way, but ultimately it feels a bit like Berserk. It feels like one of those buffs that everyone keeps slapping on skills just cause they are sad about the state of Templar in general.

I think Templars issues are more systemic at this point and aren't something you can fix with a change to 1 or 2 skills. I think passives need to be considered more than skill changes. Both Templar Tank and DPS need to be boosted at this point to make them more desirable. Some other ideas:
    • Spear Wall
Upon activating an Aedric Spear ability. You and allies within 5 meters gain Minor Protection for 6 seconds, reducing damage taken by 5%.
      Developer Note
One pain point for Templar is that they don't provide enough utility in groups. It should be baked into the Templar class to protect allies near them. At the moment, non-Templars have access to Frost Impulse and Circle of Protection, Necros get Bone Totem, Wardens have Maturation. It seems safe to establish Minor Protection as a Templar group buff for nearby allies and allies should be rewarded for standing near their closest Templar ally with a wall of protecting spears!
    • Sacred Ground
While standing within your Restoring Light area effects, and for 2 seconds after leaving, reduce the cost of non-Ultimate Restoring Light abilities by 30%, gain Minor Mending, and increase the amount of damage you can block by 10%.
      Developer Note
Templar's identity is "sacred ground". They hold the line, stand their ground, and build a house to live in! Unfortunately though, combat is OFTEN mobile. Well designed combat shifts around the area, enemies move and perform actions, and everything is really dynamic! That design though is really punishing for Templar that has to keep moving their "sacred ground" around and paying to setup again. Having to recast Cleansing Ritual because you JUST got a debuff, or because you need to shift the area slightly as the boss JUST moved, can be a big bother. The payment Templar has to make is that they have to burn actions on setting that stuff up again and being strategic in their placement. Instead of just making all skills cheaper, give Templar a strategy for shifting around as combat moves without being prohibitively expensive on resources.

Yeah, to be honest I figured that Minor Heroism on Cleansing Ritual and its morphs would be a bit too much to ask. I don't believe Restoring Aura and its morphs are used much (in PvE anyway)? I figured the Templar would be able to offer some more group utility if it was added to that skill.

Personally, I'm not too sure if it'd have to be restricted if it was the Minor version of the buff. I mean, I Nightblade can get Minor Courage for 30 seconds from its AOE spammable which also grants Major Brutality/ Sorcery and applies a debuff to the enemy, and an Arcanist can give it to a group for 20 seconds along with 3 other Minor buffs (4 if you count Minor Evasion from its passives).

If the Templar could give Minor Courage to its allies with a decent skill as well (such as Extended Ritual/ Ritual of Retribution), it would be nice for the class itself and the Templar could provide some of the group utility that its lacking too. On that note, I like your suggestion for Spear Wall!

Minor Sorcery is redundant due to the fact that every group is guaranteed to have at least one Dragonknight.

My class? I have 13 characters at the moment, including a Stamcro and Magcro, and I definitely agree that the Necromancer should be buffed too. In a topic or two on these forums about the current state of Necromancers I've also stated my dissatisfaction with the class, and in an earlier topic of mine about the lack of Major Buffs for some classes I gave the Necromancer three buffs as well. But that doesn't mean that it's the sole class that I'd like to see buffed in PvP and/or PvE :)
