Do you like having surprise in-game events?

I voted NO, simply because sometime of notice would be good for all. It gives players a chance to plan for it accordingly. I have been seeing guild members having a hard time with our current event due to other plans. At least a week would be nice.

I'm fine with surprise events as long as missing the event doesn't permanently lock me out of a unique experience or reward.

    For example:
-I'm totally fine being surprised by the explorer's celebration, where the rewards are just more of the stuff I can get any time.
-I would also be fine being surprised by somewhat frequently recurring events where I can get the same rewards or have the same experiences the next time the event rolls around.
-I wouldn't be fine with being surprised by events that grant event tickets, because missing out on those can often mean permanently missing out on rewards (although I would also like to have more ways to catch up on missed rewards from past events).
-I also wouldn't be fine with being surprised by events that have unique one-time story content attached.

This is kind of a complicated issue. I don't think anyone actually dislikes events in a vacuum. What we tend to dislike is the resultant lag and constant crashes from the servers being more active during events. THose of us who have been around for a really long time already know what sorts of things trigger poor server performance, and can prepare for it by cancelling scheduled raids and planning to stay away from the game, but surprise events don't allow for us to make these plans ahead of time.

    Being better informed helps planning.

The surprise of the awa event was deeply unpleasant.

The follow up surprise of the 'explorers celebration' kind of rang alarm bells; the notion of any kind of exploration for many was destroyed with awa since that's all become a liquidised slurry now so not really anything left to 'explore', really.

But generally, more information is always better.

@joerginger I don’t play any other MMOs so I’ve got to ask - what do other games do for events?

In GW2 entire cities change their looks. Some maps are only accessible during an event and there are lots of special activities that are not connected to "normal" gameplay.
Quite a difference to ESO. When I started playing GW2 about two years ago, I was in for a shock since I had known only ESO. It also displays at least a little sense of humour.
It's not perfect of course, because in a way GW2 is a jump 'n' run disguised as an MMO. Yes, I absolutely hate jump 'n' runs. ;)

I would rather you announce a rough date for things far in advance, eg such and such in this month.

With the actual start date being announced at least a week in advance of the start of the event.

I don't expect a fixed date since things can change but once things are ready to go and the event is going to go ahead I want to know about it before it actually starts.

ZOS won't read this - care to prove me wrong? And even if, nothing will be done about it - so:

by this 'surprise' they inadvertantly admitted to causing chaos, hence an 'appology' in the form of a 'surprise'.

That said, make a callendar containing events, even if it is approximated.

Oh, right, what am I saying... you don't read feedback :( And even if you do, it is to remove comments that point out your flaws. Merely this, and nothing more.

PS. I hereby promise I will admit I was wrong IF the callendar is added

I have to schedule my gaming time and other activities I do, and if I know there's an event coming I bump ESO up in my priorities list. If I don't and I'm just not in the mood I may not visit the game for a few days if login gifts are boring that month. So I play more if I know an event is coming.

Just to sum it up: an “Events roadmap” would be applicable as it would allow players to prepare in advance plus it would allow spare time for ZOS to come up with contingency plans in the “event” that something unfortunate were to happen during that time.
If you see me anywhere. Know that I am sitting back with a bag of popcorn, watching as ESO burns the goodwill of its player base with practices that only disrespects the players time like it did to me and many others...

If a game does not respect your time, best thing to do is move on from it and find something else.

Some of it depends on what the alternative is. If it is surprise events or no events, I would prefer surprise ones. Otherwise I agree with the desire to plan ahead.

Yes! Because why not? What do we have to lose? I really dont get why anyone would say no, its actually ridiculous. We just have more events, why say no to that? Pretty selfish tbh.

I like the idea of seeing random Daedric forces teleporting in front of you mid destination. An advanced version would be like what they had in another MMO called Firefall, where the whole town needed defending against NPC's.

As for this event, I don't mind a mini event, actually, an in game event board showing the time or things that are happening around the zone, oh, maybe I'm getting ahead of myself.

Did wonder if this was more as a result of group finder not working so we get double xp from other means instead to replace the dungeon finder rewards. If so , thanks. If not , then....Thanks also :)

If the 'event' is as minor and forgettable as doubling XP, gold and some material drops I'm indifferent because it makes absolutely no difference to what I'm going to do or how much time I spend on ESO.

But if it's an event which actually has something unique to do like New Life and the Jester's Festival (which I think are still the only two with their own activities) or which gives event tickets it would be annoying to find it's started with no prior notice because I'm very likely to miss at least some of it due to not knowing it's happening.

My free time is limited (as I'm sure everyone's is) and I've also never been the type of person to play just one game at a time. I only play one other MMO but I'll play a bunch of single-player games as well, based on what I feel like doing at the time. When I know there's an event I'll make sure I allow more time for ESO so I can play it, but I can't do that if I don't know it's happening and without that I'm likely to miss out on some of it.

It would be even better if the "Event Announcement" data was available to the API, instead of locked behind pregame/internal, since events are not static in any way. Having to update addons at least once(sometimes dates change during an event) per event every time an event comes around, is the wrong way of doing things.

Actually did not mean to select "No". Don't vote while tired. :)

I like the occasional surprise event. Can't say I like when they coincide with a broken Group Finder, all but removing the most popular and universally accessible method of participating in it. This event specifically feels like a consolation prize, and a poorly thought-out, ineffective one, at that.

What i would really like is a stable calendar for regular events.

Regular events are ones that we all know happen every year. As in Event ticket events. We as players should really know in advance when events are going to hit, and a well in advance. Often we know events are coming due to PTS testing and past years, but not knowing the exact start dates and duration is very very frustrating.

A good example of this: The 2022 Jester's Festival is supposed to be sometime in Q1, which ends in 11 days. We should have had an announcement by now as to when it is.... and we have heard nothing. So when is it? How many days is it going to last? will I even have time to get enough tickets to finish a thing with tickets?

Anniversary Jubilee Event is supposed to happen sometime.... and we have nothing on that one either.

Events are fine and great. but we need some notice. Events often serve as an interruption to normal gameplay, some activities are just simply harder to do while they are going on. having notice allows us to plan accordingly.

what would i consider a sufficient notice? No less than two weeks (a month preferably) for all events that involve event tickets. I remember one year ZOS announced all of the ticket events for the end of the year at the start of November. More of that would be nice. For popup surprise events. give us at least 24 hours notice.
