People made the same "well we did it up hill both ways in the snow" argument when (per-character) Veteren Ranks were changed out for (account-wide) Champion Points.
But that happened much earlier in the game’s timeline. And was not so wide-reaching. This is over 8 years playing for some, and they have done everything on their main; this diminishes replay value.
(Although must admit can’t recall if this is in fact true - I thought it was once you reached level 50 you started on vet points. Just remember got to level 16 before the swap to CP.)

Once you hit level 50 you automatically transitioned to Veteran Rank 1 (VR1) and then you earned Veteran Ranks the same way as levels all the way up to VR16, although the amount of XP (or VP, I think it was called) required per rank was a lot more than for the sub-50 levels. It was a slow grind, which you had to do on every character if you wanted to be able to equip max level gear, and this was before level scaling too so you needed to be max level with max level gear in order to be competitive in dungeons and PvP.
The same arguments were deployed when this was done away with in favor of account wide Champion Points, that it would "invalidate" the effort more longstanding players had put in to level multiple alts to VR16 and give newer players a "free ride". I didn't buy it then and I don't buy it now; the fact that something is a chore now does not mean it must never become easier.

(Also, if you wish, you can choose not to use CP points now. They are not forced on you.)
But achievements cover all aspects of the game & are very varied. Some are skill based, some are grindy, some are just fun.
I really don’t like the notion of all these achievements being now ‘one and done’. For all characters.
Are you against this being optional?
implementing something like this now is rendering the massive amounts of time spent earning achievements on alts since launch totally pointless.
