I just want the black dye on my main, but I think it would feel rewarding to have an npc do it, as opposed to asking in game, or buying the skill line

You'll need to ride around zone 5 of the alliances (Bangkorai, Reaper's March, and The Rift) looking for the special spawns of the blodfiends, and it's only at night. Good luck. Can take a while.

I tried this once and found it to be difficult/frustrating. One of my guildmates obliged with a bite. Best of luck to you.

I'm not in any rush, it actually would give me some goal to strive for, "special spawns"??

They spawn randomly in the areas CaffeinatedMayhem mentioned, only in-game nighttime, and sometimes they don't show up at all. Players can easily kill them so they are sometimes wiped out. If I remember correctly, they share spawn points with werewolves. So it will take some effort but hey, it could happen!

It's a rare occurrence but it's guaranteed to happen. There was once a pet on the crown store that had it's eyes glow red on these special nights, but alas it's no longer on sale.

The best bet is every time the game is night time check Bangkorai, The Rift, and Reaper's March with the maps open showing their spawn points. You might get a werewolf spawn, but if that happens the next time they come out it'll be bloodfiends! However when that next spawn will be.... I actually don't know. There was a rumor it was based on the moon phases, but I had werewolves on new moons and bloodfiends on half moons, and other crazy combos. So I know it's not based on the lunar Lorkhan.

but the mob is just called "Bloodfiend'? this special part in his post is what confused me, or are there infact special ones I should be looking out for? and how to tell them apart?

Because they're in places they otherwise wouldn't be. Bloodfiends spawn in groups of 3, and werewolves I've seen spawn with white fur. Both of these spawns are feeding on a corpse.

There spawned just at the wood survey location there :/

The special bloodfiens (like the special werewolves) come in pairs (or was it triples?), with a victim body prop. Aggro, let em maul you a bit and run away. Then check your char has the Noxophilic Sanquivoria and try again if not. (No need to kill em. Accidentally dying yourself does not prevent getting infected.)
Edit: I've seen plenty of the werewolves but bloodfiends only once and that was when I did not yet know those were special.

Yep!!! Why I bought it long ago and still use it to this day if my alt needs a bite!

Even glows on the character selection page which is really cool to.

Y'know, I see them just about any time I'm in one of those zones at night (which is actually fairly frequently as it seems to ALWAYS be night when I'm playing - I know it's not, but still....)

There's an addon if you're on PC that lets you see where the spawn points are, so you can make a circuit while farming or whatever - I think maybe it's Map Pins.

Wait... So the eyes of your pet goat still glow each Bloodfiend night? :o Are you 100% sure that they don't just glow randomly at night, and there might - or might not - be Bloodfiend spawns as coincidence?

There were originally 3 non-combat pets which had red glowing eyes as Bloodfiend indicator: Sanguine's Black Goat, Dire Pony, Daemon Cockerel.

There was nasty bug with these special pets rather long time ago. Their eyes stopped glowing at all. Then they were partically fixed - nowadays they glow randomly at nights, but the Bloodfiend indicator functionality was removed. I know for sure that my Daemon Cockerel doesn't indicate Bloodfiends since that fix... I found few Bloodfiend spawns at certain nights some time ago when I was testing the fix, and my pet's eyes didn't glow during that time.
If your Sanguine's Goat still indicates Bloodfiends, I will need to put bug report for Daemon Cockerel. Also, if somebody has Dire Pony pet, please test if his eyes glow randomly - or still indicate Bloodfiend nights reliably. It would be sad if not all 3 of these pets got back their full functionality :o

I've had 3 WW and 3 vampire infections from the NPCs, and only one was accidental.

I just went to the zones at night and looked around. Note that if you see Werewolves one night, you won't also find Bloodfiends.

On one character it took me about 5 days of trying. On another, I had the idea, went to the zone and the first spot I checked had the spawns I needed.

Now, you can also ask a player to bite you, but I find it fun to do it the "natural" way.

I did this back in 2019 and I found it quite frustrating, it took me about a month to find infectious bloodfiends (but I was only checking Reaper's March, not the other 2 zones), I saw infectious werewolves about 4 times before finding bloodfiends. The biggest problem I had is that the in-game day/night cycle is roughly 6 hours long so it was impossible for me to check for them every night because I often had to be at work or asleep.

Oh, this may not matter for you but you can be infected in any of the 3 maps where they spawn but you can only pick up the quest in your home alliance. My character was bitten in Reaper's March and the NPC didn't appear there, he had to go to The Rift to find him and to visit the shrine. It seems it hasn't been updated for One Tamriel.

That didn't work for me. I have the goat, I had it equipped on all my characters and during the time I was looking I saw its eyes glowing once during the in-game day time but they stopped before it got dark (so before the bloodfiends could spawn) and they weren't glowing when I finally found bloodfiends. They started glowing shortly after I finished the quest to become a vampire. As far as I can tell the two are unrelated.

Also the spawns definitely didn't seem to be based on the moons, I've found infectious werewolves a few days before the full moon and when they were waning and found bloodfiends a few days after the full moon (incidentally both moons seem to always be at the same phase in-game, even though various lore says they can be different).

i challenged myself to do it a hard way.
here are my observations from my one year old reddit post:

    - locations are fixed. if you play at PC platform, use Destinations addon, it has most (not all of them) covered (you have to turn on the appropriate filters in the addon setting as they are off by default). For consoles google "confirmed werewolves/bloodfiends locations". Normally NPCs spawn in one location in each of 3 zones (Bangkorai, The Rift, Reapers March)

    - time is not fixed. ZOS says around midnignt, this is true. 23:00-03:20 ingame time unless there are stars in the skies. Not every night. Like one of 4..5 nights with some rotation ww/vamp/ww/vamp.. Indeed, vampires are more likely at new moon, werewolves ar full moon, but nothing guaranteed. To check time at PC use Voatns minimap, Moon phases are tracked by ClockTST addon. For consoles check UESP site: https://esoclock.uesp.net/

Using these tools met ww's 5 times and vampires only once in 18 days, even having established routes in The Rift (easiest) and Bangkorai (Reapers March is too vast so you waste a lot of time searching, but it is less crowded).

    - players instantly kill NPCs to make them change location, thus making them harder to find for others. Many of these players sell theirs bites for 10K..20K (on other toons/accounts, also this does not violate anything: you can RP vampire hunter), so they don't want free offers to exist at all. And there are new players: wardens with bears, petsorcs with pets, now ones with companions who, most likely have absolutely no idea what they are killing, but theirs pets attach hostile NPCs. So, searching for NPCs bite is somewhat challenging, and when you log in with your another toon to infect, the location is, often, gone. Hint: use the most desert time at your server.

One more tool you might have and use is the Sanguine's Black Goat non-combat pet from the Wild Hunt Crown Crates - if you place it at your houses its eyes start glowing red when biting NPCs are out.

After the bite from NPC you must meet the Vorundil (vamp) / Thoreki (ww) in less than a week or you shall have to start anew (the quest itself is bugged (the Quest giver might not appear) and ZOS support was counter-productive for me ending up with recommending me to purchase a bite from the Crown Store, so i had to restart the ww process one more time).

The easy way is to ask your friends or guildmates to bite you. Or just sit at the appropriate altar in a peak time and wait for kind passing by stranger to turn you, normally you don't have to wait long. This eliminates the need to get quest from Vorundil / Thoreki as you ae bitten at the altar.

For WW i'd suggest to spend like 3 hours running the Hircine Grounds to level up your WW skills till you get Infectious Claws morph, because skills progress only when you kill things in a WW form. For that you would need at least 18 repair kits and 4..5 blue food and soul gems to recharge your weapons (as you are always in a WW form and don't have to transform which saves you quite a lot of time compared with killing crabs in FG1). Once exiting this area you would not be able to re-enter it. You don't need to be prepared for levelling Vampire skill line as it progresses automatically when you gain XP.

It is not difficult, but rather time-consuming.
    Good luck

Iirc, you also have to be in the right moons phase (I think new moons for vamps and full moons for werewolves). Also, there is a music-y sounds that plays when they are spawned, so if you're in the zone before nightfall you might get that cue, too.

Well how does it happen with NPCs?

Do they bite you like players or just random NPC attacks and you realize that you get infected?
