its sad that knowing this happened they did not put in place some kind of security

It is sad that problems like this are still happening, but her answer in the context of the thread is fine. People were asking if they should stop playing their affected characters or if ZOS would need to do a server rollback, and that was her reply - no, you can keep playing, we can fix this problem without having to do a rollback, and we can't do a rollback anyway.

Whether that statement turned out to be entirely correct is another story, and who knows why a rollback wasn't possible. But that thread was a wild ride, it looks like launch was extremely rough. I've only been playing since 2017 so I wasn't here pre One Tamriel.

Excepted that the result was nothing given back. We lost all, and the only answer we had was : its ok. I am sorry but at this time, loosing my whole bank that was full of items, all the crafting items, all the achievement i did, loosing my armors and weapons, to receive : we can not and no need. Nope they did fix nothing, they just *Fixed* the fact that we could just continue to play and start again. if you consider this enough, not me.

Of course time has passed, i came back and i love ESO, but nope i will not forgot that nore will give them absolution.

It’s not quite the same problem, although the outcome and response are similar. That sounds like an actual bug that we must hope was fixed years ago.

For the sake of fairness, that ''baiting'' response was for someone who talked badly about what OP said, so they deleted it. And yes I keep coming back to this thread to check if there's something new, hope Zos can find a solution.

If it were me I would be screaming from the roof top then I would uninstall and close my account I would be more than devastated after putting in 7 years. I have been here on and off for 7 years. If I lost my main character it would have an affect on me and especially my view of zenimax. I hope someone looks at this today.

I created, designed, and programmed a software product for a major U.S. industry that enabled me to make very good living for over 20 years. One thing I learned is that bugs come and go. They're a normal byproduct of the human factor involved. The thing that DOES stays with customers long after the bug has come and gone is the way a company responds to it. This affects/creates the perception of the quality of the product and the company that produced it, and the reputation it has across a given industry. It's amazing the infectious affect an act of making something right will have on the good will toward your company. Conversely, treat customers poorly, it becomes infectious in the opposite way.

ZeniMax has all the markings of a company that feels it's too big to fail. Maybe it is. But I for one will always give pause to purchase any new product with their name on it.

Feeling the exact same at this point.

"Just let it run it's course and they will just forget. It will just go away on it's own"

    "This is fine."

The utter silence speaks rather loud now indeed, I wish I could say I'm surprised.

And, as the OP has already said, it was just another generic message of a type s/he’d received plenty of already.

I don’t think anyone expects mere mods (or the OP) to post details of any acceptable recompense but the rest of us need assurances that a similar disaster will not befall anyone else and ZOS Community Managers should have been much MUCH quicker to provide those assurances.

I find it very disturbing that in situations like this ZOS can just answer: "it's not possible to fix, you can go on playing". I mean, excuse me? Wasn't that some sort of technical error on their side? Will they say the same thing if the whole sever gets wiped out?

That's so weird I can't wrap up my mind around the fact. Like, they are not even saying they are sorry in that reply from 2014. It basically sounds like players are asking about stolen stuff wiped out after encountering a guard and devs are like "what are you talking about? that's always been a part of the game".

I played another game, where database glitches happened. Not that often so it would be a common thing - I personally never encountered the problem throughout more then 7 years of playing - but everyone in the playerbase was aware it could happen simply because devs were clear about the issue. Apparently, they couldn't implement failsafes right away, but at least they could publicly admit the fact and let there players know of the issue. It was the usual for us to take screenshots of everything important we had on ourselves before major updates - and that was fine. We knew the game was buggy, we knew devs knew about it and hence we were ready to come to support at some point and have all the list of what should be restored with us - as well as they were ready to help.

Now then, I understand OP's issue is a bit different from planned updates, but how on earth is it possible that whoever it was on the other side of CS had the power to implement changes while not having instruments to bring things back to the state they were before? And if they indeed did something they were not allowed in order to help OP, why wasn't OP notified of the fact afterwards? Why is it alright to keep the player in the dark?

Why is it alright to keep all of us in the dark? Whatever the reason, it happened once, it means it can happen twice. Let us know officially it can happen then. Or if for some reason it can't, then let us know officially it can't.

I went to that 2014 thread and read the context for the reply. Players were asking if there would need to be rollbacks or if they should stop playing affected characters, and the response was no, there will not need to be rollbacks as the issue can be fixed without rollbacks and rollbacks will not help anyway, and no, you can keep playing affected characters. Taken out of the context of the thread it looks like a dismissive response, but it was a normal reply to specific questions.

OP's situation is a different story. The lack of resolution here sucks.

Why can't there be an offsite account backup on our own drives? It could be encrypted so there wouldn't be any funny business.

I doubt ZOS would be comfortable with players storing their own account backups locally, at least not if they were intended for restore. Maybe encrypted files might be ok for evidence of what was in your account so they could manually rebuild the account when this disaster hits another player. I say “when” because, so far, no one has offered any explanation as to why it can’t happen to someone else at any moment.

A better option, if ZOS can’t do individual account backups to be restored, would be for them to copy the contents of an account to their own offline location, maybe once a day, say the first time the player logs out of her or his account. It won’t help the OP here but it would reassure the rest of us that we can have confidence in their systems and processes. I’m pretty much just treading water now, since reading @Yormula’s harrowing story: no more crowns, not chasing achievements, just doing daily writs and partial Endeavours.

I’m speculating and I may be wrong but it seems to me, from the fact they couldn’t simply restore @Yormula’s account, that ZOS’s backup is for the entire player base. That may protect them against catastrophic system failure but it’s useless for individual players. So 1990s.
