Hate Whispering

I love to PVP I do it to have fun, it isn't personal and sometimes your team just doesn't gel and you all get farmed. I can totally accept that.
What I struggle to deal with is the hate whispers I get just for PVPing.

None of my builds are trolly, everything I play is max stat based with no proc sets.
I also do not play a nightblade or a magsorc  I mainly PVP on my magdk or stamcro(which I know is meta at the moment).

I wish I was the kind of person that could shrug off the aggression I get just for playing well, but it really bothers me.
Normally I just ignore someone after being hate whispered, but it legitimately puts me off playing sometimes.

Recently I am getting hate whispered once a day which is a massive increase.
I don't know if it is because people have been playing all day and are frustrated by the time i finish work and can jump on and play.
It certainly seems to me though it has increased from being occasional to frequent.

What I think would be good is if during PVP the other team/faction couldn't whisper you, with maybe a cooldown after a BG.
This would allow people the opportunity to chill out and reconsider their transgressions.
Maybe this could be an option to switch on and off, but regardless I would rather not receive abusive messages just for playing the game as intended.
I know you can set yourself to offline mode, but this also eliminates friends from whispering you.

I used to play WOW probably 10 years a go now and it was impossible for people to send you private messages from the opposite faction, so this was never an issue.

Perhaps it is just me, but regardless I would love to hear people's thoughts on this?

No matter if you survive or died in an encounter that results you receiving hate whispers, you have ultimately won the battle and war. Screen shot them, and collect them as a badge of honor and periodically post them to show the amount of salt others will go to just cause they didn't get their way.

I'd love to see an addon that could take any whisper and auto translate it into some sort of ultra positive message instead.

    So they would send:

    **** you right in the **** ***.

    But you would see:

Your breath is like a gentle summer breeze that fills me with joy and creates happiness waves throughout the community.

The best way to deal with hate whispers (apart from ignoring, but I don't have the self control) is to reply in a manner that you would to your translated example above -

"Thanks so much, glad you are a fan <3"
"You're a star, thanks SO much for your message"

    That type of stuff XD.

My Night Blade gets hate like you wouldn't believe. I rarely make it through a serious PvP day without at least some insult, threat, or person generally just letting me know they loath my existence. It's kind of funny once you get used to it. So my advice is to just take it in stride and learn to have fun with it.

For example: yesterday I had some person telling me to go ____ myself and die, that I was a worthless trashblade and a coward who needs to learn to stop hiding behind my stealth and fight like a man. lol

Oddly enough it's just my Night Blade who gets these kind of reactions. When I fight on my other classes I hardly ever get them. So I don't know if this is just common reactions for Night Blades or not.

Haha I love how this thread turned out positive 😊

There will always be immature people hiding behind their computer screen, hard to do much about that. I often think when you get hate messages that it's good feedback for me as a person since I don't do that and aren't that kind of person myself.

Keep sending hearts to them ❤️

Turns out there's a theory to explain just that !

    the 10% theory !

It says that, in any given group/subdivision of humanity, there are 10% ..eeer .. [snip] (I snipped myself, I can"t think of a word that would not be snipped - just use your favorite derogatory term there)

People who sing in the shower? --> 10% snips !
People with blue eyes? --> 10% snips !
People that wore a collared shirt last christmas? --> 10% snips !
And lastly, as in the subject of your post, pvp players --> 10% snips ! (same with pve players,)

It works for ANY arbitrary subdivision you can think of !
Of course, it means there a 90% decenst persons everytime, but a snip is really more loud.

Sadly, in PVP, there is a lot of inter-personnal contact, thus, you encounter the 10% snips a bit more.
Don't let it get to you.

    It’s a compliment.

I’m loving it each time I manage to *** someone off to the point they have to degrade themselves, all while I’m in my jammies, sipping tea, and high fives the cats.

Some people get way too cranky when you kill them in PvP. Play with whispers turned off unless you can't because you're playing with friends.

I usually just go into google translate, type a positive message in Russian, German or Japanese copy and paste it into my whisper back to them, most give up bothering you if they think you can't understand their messages.

It will backfire one day when someone actually responds and I don't have a clue what they are saying either but that is a problem for the future.

I think the ignore function is sufficient in cases such as these. Don't engage, just ignore, report if necessary, and move on.

Online games are akin to public gatherings in rl, and like in those environments we have to be tolerant of those very different than us for the greater good of communication.

A lot of friendships and communities have begun after good fights between like-minded individuals on opposition teams. And fun rivalries between combatants who enjoy trash talk too.
Those people really should have just been angry at themselves.
    They probably were.

In general you are expected to be able to deal with the toxicity if you go into pvp. If it gets to you, you can always set your status to offline. Nobody will be able to whisper you. You still can use group and guild chats though.

I really appreciate the support guys! I hope I can gain thicker skin over time and just laugh at it.

I normally do just put people on my ignore list or report if they are being very abusive. Sometimes I make the mistake of replying.

Switching to offline mode isn't an option for me as I whisper with friends and I am also part of guild that helps new players so I get a lot of whispers from them.

I hear this, but I don't do PVP because I enjoy being toxic and tea bagging people(which I never do).
Genuinely enjoy competing directly against other humans. I have 2 guilds I get a lot of whispers from so setting myself offline isn't really an option for me.

I guess some people's egos just can't handle defeat. :#

Personally, if I were to hate-whisper everyone who's better than me, I'd be so busy typing angrily into the chat box that I'd have no time for anything else! I just proceed from the assumption that I'm going to lose, so there's nothing to get upset about. :D

It's quite sad honestly. Yesterday I had someone in BG said to the group before we even started that they are sorry and they suck. Like.. holy *** man. I told them not to worry, I'm just there to have fun. You either win or lose, it's just a game.

I never understood the need to hate whisper.. if you feel the need to do that, take a step back, breathe and perhaps log off.

Initially, I was a bit wound up by it. But now I don't care at all. Getting whispers isn't that common for me, people are more often using Xbox messages. Way back, I would like "bite back", but now I'm only replying by sending hearts and kisses, "I'm so sorry" or stuff like that (which either makes them furious or friendly, there's like no in between!). I have even made at least a couple of "friends" in other factions through being just friendly like that - when they have been sending me hateful messages. We wave at eachothers dead bodied, teabag one another or use some sad emote just for fun. If I encounter them solo, we just laugh, dance and bash one another etc. It's pretty heartwarming to be honest.

Generally, I tend to block people, and/or report them to Microsoft if they are over the top. But mostly I neither reply/report or anything. Just block. Was pretty calm for a while, until I made a PVP necro tank a while ago. I can summarize it and say it wasn't popular among enemies. Having like 50 guys teabagging you, and 10 messages in an evening about how you suck and all.

However, these things spread outside PVP areas too. You end up with "enemies" in dungeon finder, who try to provoke you and such. And you get invited to duels and such when you go to some more player populated area. People calling you out in area chats and such. But. All it means, is that you have been good enough in PVP for people to remember you. Never forget that, no matter how bad they say you are.

I don't PvP that much, in BGs at least, no one ever whispered me, but in Cyro, that's an other story.

I consider hate whispers to be some kind of trophy, a proof of your skill, I'm actually happy when I get one xD
I do love to send whispers to my opponents sometimes, but they're always positive. I've had nice chats with people who just obliterated me. I remember back to IC release, someone actually gave me pieces of advice and recommended me a build, for the first time. I still get some tips here and there since :) If they beat me, they must be doing something good, so I probably have something to learn from them.
