That's not the actual problem, though. Whenever the browser or other application (such as an online game) has a problem logging you in with your account information, it's common to display a generic message which suggests that you should check your user name and password to be sure they've been entered correctly, or words of a similar sort of meaning. It's basically just a "one message that tries to give a blanket explanation for many different possible reasons" sort of thing.

In this case, your user name and password are (probably) valid, but something is happening-- or not happening-- on the server side and this means that your client application isn't having any success trying to log you in with your (probably) valid user name and password.

I tried to log in on the ESO website, and selectec the option to log in using my Steam account (because that is how I log in). It successfully retrieved my user name and password for Steam, and got as far as displaying a notice about how their privacy agreement had recently changed (but the date mentioned was from back in January if I remember correctly), so it wanted me to check the box that said I understood and agreed to the revised agreement. It displayed my user name above that notice, so that means my user name and password were valid and had been accepted. But when I agreed to the new policy and tried to proceed past that point, it got hung up for a while and then came back with an Error 504 Gateway Timeout message.

There is nothing wrong with your user name and password, despite whatever the message you're getting might suggest. The problem is strictly on the side of the ESO server, not your account.
