From some quick testing it's pretty much in line with other ST DoTs, especially when you look at it per second. It doesn't have the up front hit you get from cripple, vampire's etc. or the bonus damage from swarm.
The fact that it is a generally accessible DoT also helps ensure all magicka classes have options.

I haven't touched my magblade for awhile but it looks like it does way, way more than crippling grasp. On my necro soul trap and entropy both have a 23.5k tooltip, and for comparison Boneyard is 17k, Blastbones is 13.7k, and Mystic Siphon is 21k over 12 seconds. Pretty sure on my stamdk soul trap would be substantially (like 40%) stronger than any dot that I have access to.

Those are Rookie numbers.
Disclaimer: The following screenshot is from a discord so I cant say under which circumstances this Tooltip came into existance.

Yep. On my StamDK Soul trap is 23k when Claw is 18.2k. A dot that costs magicka is doing more damage than a class ability and one of the strongest dots in the game. why.png
edit: Soul Trap also damages two targets unmorphed, and puts the dot on three targets when it's morphed. what.

I was casting everything on a fixed 8s rotation to do some testing. Degeneration was between the total reflective light (up front and DoT) damage and the total flame reach (up front and DoT) damage.
I'm trying to compare ST(ish) DoTs to each other and they don't look far apart at all.

I didn't realize destructive reach was buffed that much, jeez. If you're magicka, rip class skills? Looks like reach, entropy, and soul trap will be mandatory to slot for dps.

CP is a crutch for people who can’t sustain and want to be "tanky" so they aren’t immediately punished for making mistakes.

For single target, yes, good luck clearing trash with that.
So wait a second....Mages Guild skill tree is now buyable and it suddenly has completely overpowered skills? Same with Soul Magic? No way...
What is the problem ?
Everyone cry about DPS loss and ZoS give you an alternate way to build to keep dmg up.
And now you complain ? I don't get it.
If ZoS give me a new strong heal skill to replace Grand healing, I'll be happy.
So, don't complain plz, at least DPS have possibility to still be effective.

The tooltips are high enough that they look like they'll be mandatory to slot, potentially replacing class skills. Right now on my mag necro I don't have a class skill that does more damage per gcd than reach, entropy, or soul trap, meaning these three dots will now be part of my rotation no matter what. It's completely crowding out any class skills, which are weak in comparison.
