Thanks for the update. I'm willing to buy the game (again) direct from ESO. How would I go about making sure all of my characters and their progression transfers over? Thanks so much!

I did this yesterday and it works fine. Bought the base game on sale for $10, used my Username/Password that I use for ESO Steam version, and started playing in 10min. All my characters, DLC’s, Houses, achievements, etc are still there. Steam version times out, version I just bought through ESO official store works without a problem! And NO I didn’t own this game before the Tam One update, first purchased Nov 2016. This is a Steam problem and I’m glad I’m free from it!

What about Summerset? Are you able to access that too (if you bought the chapter)?

    Yep, can still access Summerset.

I bought my copy from Steam Feb 11 2017, and am able to login through the .exe

Did you try it with Steam completely closed or logged off?

I have to have steam running, but on the days people were having problems logging in through steam, if I tried to launch the game through Steam, I would get the same problem. Launching it from eso64.exe would allow me to login and play normally.

So you are paying them after all this showing of unprofessionalism? Dude you must be totally out of your mind. ahahahaha this is the last straw.

I paid them again as well to be able to unlink from steam. Heck I did it 3 times because I wanted my wife and daughter's accounts unlinked as well. Would I have preferred a free option to unlink from steam? Yes. Is there one right now? No. Does whining and complaining about it do anything? Apparently not. So I did what was available to me, especially because there was a sale on it at the time.

10/10 Would throw money away again.

And people like you are the reason all game companies are able to take advantage of their customers and customer service has gone to the wayside. They know you will just pay them a second, third, fourth, or even fifth time for the same product as is with no fix instead of holding them accountable.

It's people like me who would prefer to be online playing the game as opposed to staring at a login screen. When my car breaks down, I don't go on the Honda forums and complain that their car making service has gone to the wayside, I pay a mechanic to fix it. Here there was a way that I could pay to fix it. So I did.

    I agree entirely!

If I thought ZOS could be trusted to permanently fix this problem then I would have saved my £7.50 and waited for them to deliver.

    BUT THEY CANNOT

it is literally personal choices and rights to either purchase again another game client from ZOS or not. It is up to them.

But my personal view is, for Steam end users who experienced this issue/downtime and lost their playtime during the event, below are the steps that i feel are important and need to be taken:
    • should be given a fair compensation (fairness and empathy)
    • given a complete, detail and comprehensive information on what is going on, causes, actions taken, impact, temporary/permanent issue, etc (transparency and support)
    • give assurance to players whether this issue will happen again in the future, alternative user friendly solutions, options, guidelines, corrective actions, help support (perhaps ESO to be added as one of the games into Bethesda.net Launcher)? etc (problem solving and seriousness)

    Just giving my view.

I can work around by opening the eso64.exe but seeing my friend who is new to ESO, purchased through Steam recently and cannot login and play the game but instead researching in the internet, forums for workarounds also makes me desperate and feeling guilty. I want him and also other Steam players who experienced this issue can fully understand what is happening and doesn't make them avoiding to play ESO anymore. This game have a lot of opportunities actually.

Ok so this is weird. I was going to try to load it up without Steam running so I could post the exact error that it gave me when I've tried that in the past, but for whatever reason I was able to login fine, without Steam running. A little confusing but I'm not complaining. I know other people have mentioned activating a code on ZOS's site will somehow fix the issue, and I did do that sometime this winter around Sept/Oct/Nov-a friend of mine had an extra pet code they didn't need and gave it to me.

So just to sum up, I purchased the game Feb 11, 2017 from Steam, linked it to my eso account sometime around Morrowinds launch, and activated a non-combat pet code sometime during the fall/winter months. I also purchase my ESO+ membership through the website, and not through Steam.

Valve quite rightly point out that ESO uses a third party (ZOS) login process that they have no control over.

Buying the discounted base game from ESO store does not change a single thing in your steam installation of ESO and you just carry on using it - but use the Bethesda.net launcher instead and authenticate directly via the ZOS login process.

I suspect that there is a tug of war going on between ZOS and Valve for various undeclared reasons.

Maybe ZOS are seeking a divorce from Steam on the grounds of Valves “apparent” but not explicitly stated “unreasonable behaviour”

Considering this game is nearly entirely funded by the crown store and crates. What would it cost them to send out some keys? My eso plus expires in less than 10 days and I will not be letting it renew. For me it’s a sad end to a fun six months. It would appear that the whales have ruined it for everyone else.

Hokay, this kind of stuff happens. Like many of you guys/galls already stated it seems like a problem with ZoS/Valve contract. And i think we can exclude all this 'APIs fault' discussion since after logging through site you can find whole info about source of your subscribtion - im not an IT guy, and know sh!t about coding, but i imagine simple failsafe login mechanism for this sort of issues would do the trick. And since whole this situation repeats itself, you dont have to be a quantum surgeon to understand that for some reason they simply cant do it. Ergo: they are tied with some obligations which forbidds them to use this kind of solution.
Anycow, what strikes me most and makes me really angry is the lack of ANY crisis management procedures within ZoS. No communication with community (we are your source of income ffs!) - srsly two (2) infos witin like 24h period (?!?!), banner which clearly means nothing ('Hey, Steve! Sorry to call you after your working hours but there is a problem with Steam users again. Would you be so kind and pop-up standard banner?' 'Sure, no problem. Want me to do anything else?' 'Nah, go back to watching football championships. We will look into it first thing tomorrow! Customers will understand, they always do!' 'Okidoki, ciao'), totally ignoring 'negative review' movement on steam forums (in fact this one made me laugh very hard). To add this stuff up: no prevention, no mitigation, no reaction and no recovery (im not counting 'free Psijic crate!' because it really wont flush this whole frustration). I really hope you can learn from this situation and show you care about your customers next time.
    Just my 2 cents.

    *gets compensation*

    "NOT GOOD ENOUGH!"

I only just started playing this game so don't have any idea of how Z compensates for the down time. However, as a paying customer, I'd be reasonably happy with 2 days of subscription compensation for each day that there have been login issues. The 2nd day is to alleviate the blood pressure issues caused by the irritation ;)

... in fact, the ONLY people who are having issues are those trying to login through Steam.

I will not disagree that there is the possibility that the blame for the STEAM login issue may lay directly at Valve's feet, however, claiming that as fact, before the cause has been determined by the professionals, is patently false as is claiming that Steam users are the only people affected by login "issues". Your outright denial and adds nothing of value to this thread and is only detracting from its purpose.

While Steam users are taking the brunt of the login issues, there are many others not using Steam that are unable to log in as well.

A quick search in the PC technical support forum would have shown you this.

And that's just the ones who can't log in at all and doesn't account for all those others who are still having log in "issues" as you mentioned above.

    @ZOS_GinaBruno

Ever since the Summerset release, my launcher has continued to have the same issues every patch.

It does one of three things.

    1. It completely locks up midway through the patch.
    2. It gets stuck in an endless loop of verification and patching.
    3. Results in telling me to use the repair function.

This becomes an endless task of repeating all the processes, and the only entertainment is trying to guess which of the above three will happen the next time I initialize the launcher.

My fix to get me into the game has been to repeat the patches until it actually completes 100% and then "CLOSE" the launcher out without hitting the play button.

I then go into my client files and start the eso64.exe file with admin rights and log into the game. I do a quick run around checking for botched tiles and textures then log out and close out the game.

Then I log in using the launcher (somehow runing the eso64.exe seems to push start the launcher where it will work "if" the patch actually loaded 100%.) and do one more check for missing tiles and textures and then log back out to "solidify" the fix.

If there were missing tiles and textures, I do a repair function and repeat the process of trying to get the repair to make it completely through as it suffers from the same issues patching does.

Repair 100% then log out and admin the eso64.exe, do my visual checks and log out again.

^ This has been the only process that has worked for me so for to be able to get in and play the game.

    HOWEVER!!!!

Steam users cannot launch from the eso64.exe. That means if their launchers are stuck in the loops that mine is then it is quite possible they would see this as a steam timeout error and not have any way to get around it.

Only "some" non-Steam users were having the same issue I am and only some of those used the same fix I do. That means if this is "one" of the issues then some steam users should be unaffected and actually able to log in.

Not trying to make things more confusing just desperately hoping this may help in some way in regards to all login issues.

My guess is that there is something preventing ZOS from being able to unlink steam games, it might be in the contract they had to agree to to allow it to be on steam in the first place. That's just speculation though.

Contracts aside the user login credentials are probobly encrypted tokens within ZOS's database that only the Steam API can authenticate. And if any player data is associated with that encrypted data then it would probobly brick things alot worse to try to change it.
The only difference is in the login authentication. They (ZoS) didn't take the time to write different API's and encryption for standard data for their game that resides on their server. based on the platform of choice.

Nothing needs to be installed or reinstalled. Just use the Bethesda.net launcher within your existing steam installation and enter the emailed authentication code when prompted.

You can continue to use steam as before to login and make purchases if you want to but now you have an alternative login route.

Your extension of my metaphor isn't quite accurate. You see a recall is when a company both acknowledges that there is a problem AND is willing to pay to fix it. ZOS has barely done the former and certainly hasn't done the latter. The real question is 'do I pay when there should have been a recall but hasn't been' and the answer to that is yes. I had a Pontiac Grand Prix that had a tiny piece buried inside the engine that would pretty much guarantee to fail after about 5 years. There was a huge petition trying to get GM to do a recall but there wasn't one. So I had to pay $2000+ to have them take apart my engine to fix it. I didn't like doing it, but it was either fork up the money or abandon the car. Yeah it sucked but I needed my car.

What people seem to be missing from my posts is that I still think that this solution sucks. If there was a free option, I obviously would have done that. But there isn't, and so for a steam player who could barely log in but still wanted to play the game, I took the easiest choice. It is not my responsibility to provide the perfect solution to this problem, so it shouldn't matter to anyone else what solution I picked. If you want to keep waiting, go right ahead. Personally I was tired of waiting.

As for repurchasing, I have no clue. That's a future event that may or may not happen and I would hate to presume how future me would handle it.

I'm curious: for the people who have bought the game a second time, what happens to all the Steam stuff you've bought, like if you bought Summerset, Morrowind, ESO Plus through Steam. Do those all just still work exactly as normal if you log in outside of Steam with the "base game" purchase?

Is the 'collective good' going to pay my ESO+ membership that I can't use because I can't log in?
Is the 'collective good' going to get me my daily rewards and free crates I missed out on because I can't log in?
Is the 'collective good' going to do my daily writs and level my mount that I can't do because I can't log in?
Is the 'collective good' going to have the fun that I wish I could be having but can't BECAUSE I CAN'T LOG IN?

    One word, selfish.

Since you're the super generous person of the two of us, why don't you start buying copies of the game for the people who want to be able to log in but can't. Show them the power of the 'collective good'.

Or is your unselfishness more of the 'I'll call other people selfish but that's as far as I go'.

In the case of a decision that will clearly have impact on the community and the game itself it's unwise to be selfish and support them in being lazy about a real issue by throwing money at them for their incompetence.

What they are most probably doing now is laughing thinking "we messed up and they paid us for it" :joy:

Was it really so difficult to wait a few hours? Is the addiction really so strong?

Take a chill pill, search on Google for support groups.

Ok, I get it. You outed yourself with the 'few hours' comment. You aren't actually dealing with this issue, you're commenting on it from an outside perspective. I'm not going to take the time to explain to you that multiple days is not 'a few hours', nor am I going to mention how some people only have a certain time of day they can play because they have other priorities in their life so therefore aren't able to patiently wait for 'a few hours', finally I will in no way comment on how ludicrous it is how you, a person who is not dealing with this problem, is deciding what is best for the entire community.

Okay, let's try this one then?

Say you pay your mechanic to keep your car in good condition, and fix a problem if he finds one.

He indicates it's fixed, but when you pick it up, you find out the repair didn't correct the issue.

Do you pay him again to do the same repair again, or do you expect him to correct it because that's what he was initially paid to do?

You found a way to get back on the road quickly, and you chose to go this route. That's fine.

It still doesn't dismiss the fact that a customer determined workaround, let alone one that requires additional cost for something already paid for, should not be required in the first place.

This is analogous to not being able to drive at all if your garage door opener stops working. Wouldn't it be more reasonable for ZoS to provide a way to manually open the door in such cases? Or should you simply purchase a new car every time your remote decides to glitch out?

Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

    Earn it.

IRL'ing for a while for assorted reasons, in forum, and in game.
I am neither warm, nor fuzzy...
Probably has checkbox on Customer Service profile that say High Aggro, 99% immunity to BS

Of course it shouldn't! No where did I ever say it should! But I can't make ZOS or Valve fix it anymore than you can. And despite what Mother Teresa up there thinks, my being 'selfish' isn't going to make that fix any faster or any slower.

By all means yes. And like I said, if you want to wait until they do, then go right ahead!

But I busted my way out... or bribed the warden? The metaphor is getting confusing.
