Pretty eye opening statistics that makes me never want to support this game ever again. I'll just leave this here and before all the you don't have to buy them comments. There is no defending this. I’m pretty sure they only give free crates out to trigger people to buy more once they’ve opened them. Didn’t get something you wanted? Maybe you’re more likely to get it next time. Got something good? Well why not just buy a few more in case you get something else you might like.

I mean, if people want to spend obscene amounts of money on things that don't give them a competitive edge over anyone else in-game, who cares? "oh noes, your fashion score is higher than mine, how will I live now?"

I'm only against loot boxes / cash shops when they offer items that give players an edge in combat.

To anyone who feels triggered by the shop / loot boxes in this game, go play rift (or a game with a cash shop like it) for a hot minute and get back to me

Thing is, those odds aren't even official.

At least my state lottery has to be upfront and honest about the odds of (not) breaking even and the various levels of prizes.

A good portion of the playerbase are here because they love the lore and RP (whether in guilds to that end or just do it solo as they play). Why should their enjoyment of this game fund yours?

Even with the odds known whales keep spending. The thrill for me always has been the small chance i have in getting something. Upfront i know what i want to spend and never go above that amount.
That's why people love a casino, a lottery, just the small chance in winning something. That industry earns billions.

Here is the problem with statistics: They mean nothing to the individual. I personally don't buy crown crates, I see no reason whatsoever to do so, any more than I see any reason to buy lottery tickets. Honestly, its the same thing...I see it as a waste of money...some people dont...its not as if anyone forces you to buy them, they have no effect on gameplay, so whatever...if people are willing to spend an average of $2000 to get a radiant apex mount, then obviously they can afford it. [snip] Do yourself a favor: Think of it this way: If its in a crown crate...it doesn't exist...simple.

I bought some crown crates the other day. Got the awesome frost bear mount and some crazy lookin tiger with a gold plated armor piece on its back.

And some essentials as I’m still leveling.

OP, I have only 2 words for you specifically. Well, maybe more than 2.

self control. It’s cosmetics, not a p2win. Why allow a game which provides such a feature to ruin it for you?

I mean, duh. Of course that is part of the motivation to give out free ones. They want to let people know that they exist. If there are people who get excited and will want to chase that high, ZOS welcomes the revenue.

I'll happily take the free crates. I would also be happy to see crates go away. It is a shame that some people feel a compulsion to buy lottery tickets or crates or whatever. I would love to see lotteries disappear, as well as the crates. But I enjoy the free crates, even if I have no interest in buying cosmetics.

You also did well, as an new player crown crates is an pretty good deal actually, if you just want some costumes, pets and mounts and don't care that you are getting.

Then you have a senche mount and a pet who match fur color of your 6 Khajiit alts you start getting more selective

Liked the document, note that for an spesific item the cost would be closer to the average cost to get enough gems but it drops of at more expensive items as you get more gems as you have more items.

I don't buy crates as much as I use to. I spent a lot to try and get the Frost Skeletal Senche Apex reward and got the ugly Cinder Wolf, I asked if I could trade Apex mount for another Apex mount and they said no. I spent so much trying to get that mount that I had over 1,000 Gems to spend on the Flame Atro Skin and mount. After that I just lost any motivation to buy crates and don't even try to buy for apex. Of course I like the Red Flame Senche now, I just have zero interest in even trying for it. I only try now to get gems to focus on the small things I want that is cheaper and easier to obtain. Or spend the money on something I know I will get. Waste of money but I learned my lesson trying to get an Apex mount. If I could trade the Ugly Cinder Wolf, I would. A guild mate got the Frost Sench Apex mount and when I look at it, I am just reminded how much I spent to get that and didn't. Such a waste.

Edit: Yeah, I am still bitter about it. 6 months later. But it taught me to not lust for the stupid Apex mounts.

Using this definition - A person who spend incredible amount of money in gacha type games which makes him/her ultra powerful and godlike.


I keep seeing this in game forums and I have to say......don't you mean something like Spendthrift, profligate, wastrel, squanderer?

Er, no. It does not follow at all that because people spend stupid amounts of money they can afford it. It's part of why gambling is bad.

Have you never seen the "I spent $10/50/100 on crown crates and didn't get a single radiant apex mount!" topics?

Plenty of people either don't know (or understand) the odds or think they're going to be the exception and will get the rarest drops (or the ones they want most) with just a few crates.

Honestly, I've never understood the obsession people have with these ugly mounts, whether they're random draws or $30+ individual purchases. /shrug


As for the stats.... eh, sure. Looks pretty similar to other analyses I've seen over the years. Not terribly shocking or new. Let alone some sign of "the intentions of zenimax" <dramatic chord>.




(personally, I always love free lootboxes in games. They give extra reinforcement to not bother buying them, by how disappointing the free samples are. I laughed when they originally said CoD WW2's boxes would be opened publicly in the common social areas for everyone to see. My only thought was "wow, they want to convince people to never buy any!")

I apologize. I did not mean "yours" as in any specific 'you'. (BTW, I also sub and buy chapters)

What I meant was the more general 'you' of the "crown crates are okay and $100 houses are okay as long as they are cosmetic only because it funds development and someone has to support the game and since there are no weapons or gear with good stats, I don't care since I'm not interested in cosmetic stuff and don't buy it anyway" 'you' crowd.

I always hated the crates and the more they got pushed and altered in favour of making more money, however Summerset really has left me feeling very bitter.

I still love ZOS developers and think they do a great job making an enjoyable and amazing game, but I am seriously tired of the marketing side and the continued push to take the mick.
ESO makes a lot of money, great everyone should be happy for that, but damn at some point stop thinking about how you can have it make more money because it's starting to show up at the expense of the games look.

Just think ,,,,all those "whales" buying the crates are helping fund this game so you can play. Subs alone can't pay for everything so to get extra revenue the crown shop is needed. Beside no one can tell me how I can spend my money that I earn through work
