Is Eso the best mmorpg out?

For me, yes. Can be better, sure!

I'm not a mmo player. I prefer single player games but, ESO is the first mmorpg that really get me (I play warframe but for me is diferent, I play it solo most of the time).

I pay the ESO + because I really spend time in this game, 'cause for me is worth my money. It could emprove, sure. More dungeons, more mobs, more mount types, more items, etc etc. But imho this game, is worth it.

Of the ones I've played, it's my favorite; LOTRO is a close second, primarily for reasons of nostalgia. To RE: to an above player, LOTRO may seem heavily pay-gated, but the content you get for free is pretty substantial, and you theoretically are able to "buy" a LOT of the store items just via completing achievements to earn Turbine Points. It also has a great music system, the houses are fun, and it has one of the nicer communities in gaming. Haven't played it as much since Mordor was released (although I bought it), since that's around the time I started getting back into ESO.

I was a hardcore WoW raider for a couple years around the time of WotLK and Burning Crusade expansions. I enjoyed it back then, but it became too much of a time-intensive grind-fest by the end (i.e., it felt like a second full-time job). Age of Conan was fun for the first few months, then I lost interest. Never got hugely into GW. SWTOR had some of the best story content early on, and I still play it, but I haven't been as big a fan since the whole Eternal Empire and Alliance situation. And, unfortunately, the lack of development resources is becoming very apparent.

    - lore, quests and story driven?
    - non target combat?
    - optional subscription?
    - visual/system requirements ratio?

for all of this ESO is # 1 mmorpg

For me it is the best or more like least worst MMORPG at the moment. The whole genre is very flawed if you ask me, every MMO out there is either riddled with bugs or suffers from some other major problems.

not the best of options and flavour , eso has pedgree and i rate as a classic same for gw2 , since i completed gw2 long time ago havent been back , i have come back from beta but when i complete this then that be this one done .

there is only so many times you go do the dungeons , last count on gw2 40+ fractuals was the end for me . on eso done all the normals 1 & 2 starting on vets done a 3rd of them , so just trials and do all the quests so game for me has a 6+ more months , of completing , then moving on .

    every game has its merits

but thb, Story wize SWTOR beats ESO.

SWTOR has cinematic cut scenes, which makes your voiced character come to life. and 8 different separate class stories.

I dont feel that "connected" to my ESO characters.

Agree. BW is brilliant at this aspect. I miss it but since I pretty much played both sides all the way through with all the classes, time for a break and I was finally able to come back here (had a technical problem that, for years, couldn't be solved).

What I loved about SWTOR as well are riddles. I don't remember the name exactly, but it was something similar to skyshards in ESO. And it was no joke, you had real sense of accomplishment after collecting them. Skyshards in ESO are boring and laughable IMO.

LOTRO was fantastic if you were there from the beginning as I was. Gorgeous graphics (remember this was over ten years ago; I don't know how it looks now). Great community, excellent quests -- I'll never forget going for the first time to the Prancing Pony and meeting Strider there. Or the Bill the Pony story that came out with Moria. I raided for several years with a top raiding guild and probably played at my highest skill level during those years.

I finally quit when it became clear that things were changing, development was slowing, and free-to-play with a cash shop was the new trend. No new raids were anywhere in the development chain ( I was an alpha tester, so I saw the stuff early) and servers, including mine, the Big E, were being dumped. Plus...ESO was finally in beta so I said a fond farewell to LOTRO. But in its heyday, it was a great game.

I also played the first Guild Wars and GW2 (liked the first better), SWTOR for a short while (didn't get into it), FFIV (seemed pretty cool, if generic, but then ESO launched) EQII and a few others that came and went.

My two favs are definitely LOTRO and ESO, with ESO having the edge since it's current and pretty darn awesome.

I played a lot of games over the years, but always got back to any new part of ElderScrolls.
I like it as an MMO.
Sure there are many things I don´t like, and that are mainly the little differences between classes.
It is not encouraging to introduce a new class and in less then 2 updates it is nerfed to the grave!
it is not encouraging to introduce new sets that are with next upgrade (this name is certainly not a programm) unplayable cauze of "adjustments".
so yes, no need to go for excellence in this game, but to troll around it is good enough!

At the launch of swtor the game was great. Sadly there is no endgame content right now. They have not added anything new for PVP for more than 2 years. I am a huge fan of star wars universe and I tried to play it recently but its just zero content. Also the free to play version or even the preferred status are *** compared to before. So not only did they not released any *** content but they decided to *** non subscribers even more. I have to admit swtor was the only game I enjoyed leveling since it was really immersive. Sadly the devs were only good at that..Also people tend to think Bioware is at fault. There is no Bioware anymore since EA took them over. And we all know how "great" EA is. I have tried to play GW2. The game is almost perfect. There is no pay to win aspect and you got tons of armor customization. Sadly I could never get used to the combat in pvp. It has its flaws especially since it favors range classes. I played BnS. Got bored. I played a lot of BDO. I tried to make it work but in the end after I took a break from it I realised how pay to win it was. Even on gamez private server with free pearls I get no incentive to grind so much. I put all my hopes that by giving ESO another true shot I hope to stick with it.

    @Malthorne

Thanks for the info on FF14, saved me some money there.

For those who do primarily play solo, if you like ESO, don't overlook Skyrim. It pretty big, has 3 expansions, dragons to kill which is awesome, and dungeons that will keep you busy for months. And the questing is also very good.

And nothing is mandatory - play how you like - you can get to max level 75-90 somewhere around there before doing any quest chains.

And, lots of player mods- And there are players who make mods as good as the developers.

One suggestion if you haven't played Skyrim and are going to. Get off the roads. There are a lot of things out in the mountains and fields that you won't see if all you're doing is riding from one place to the next.

    Good luck.

BDO: Zero PvE content (100% PvP game with endless level grind)

Plain wrong there sorry. There is a lot of PVE to do, and PVP is everywhere, but its far from 100% of the time.
but yes..grind..grind.. stupid upgade system and well.. pvp when your not exactly wanting it at times.

There is one group dungeon in BDO. Endgame PvE consists of killing world bosses...

    It's 100% a PvP game.

WoW: Terribly outdated graphics and slow tab target combat, boring quest structure, endless gear grind
GW2: Outdated graphics, designed around tab target combat, boring quests (just fetch/kill quests and dynamic events)
BDO: Zero PvE content (100% PvP game with endless level grind)
    FFXIV: Basically an updated WoW
    SWTOR: Dead game
TERA: Good combat and nothing else
    Random Korean/Chinese MMOs: P2W

I personally do prefer ESO overall but GW2's graphics, while slightly lower res than ESO, are not outdated at all and most of the armours look far better than ESO's Body Paint. The Combat isn't really Tab Targeting either as people can actively dodge attacks, people can move in front of projectiles to block them and you are not locked to a target while in combat.

GW2 just used an updated version of the GW1 engine. It limited the size of the game world (that's why their zones are more "vertical"). The texture quality is also extremely low as a result (they just lather on the bloom effects to cover it up).

The problem with the combat is how disjointed it feels. On the one hand, it still uses tab targeting, but on the other, there is an element of active combat as well, like dodging. I know they added an aiming reticle with the first expansion, but tab targeting was still more efficient as the base combat system was designed around it.

    What does "best" even mean?

I mean, the housing and crafting systems don't even come close to being on the level of Star Wars: Galaxies, a game from 15 years ago.

On the other hand, the storytelling is great.

The combat is more exciting than a lot of turn-based MMOs. Is that a good or a bad thing? I mean, after all, half the reason I play RPGs is that I'm not coordinated and I like to get to pretend I am. So I shouldn't have to be coordinated to have a strong character. Or should I?

In other words, it's all very subjective. It's not the way I would have done it, sure. But If I had designed the game, every zone would be several times as large as it is now, with mob density way down, giving us the opportunity to really explore without a fight every three seconds. Other players would be bored or actively hate that.

First off: asking this type of question on the ESO official forums is going to garner you some pretty biased results

Second off: its good to see that the responses and poll results are indeed positive as other mmo communities *cough SWTOR *cough* are extrememly hostile and negative towards their respective games.

Third off: Yes, ESO is in fact the best pound for pound MMORPG on the market right now. Whether that be due to lack of competition or on its own merits or a combination of everything, who can say but it certainly is in a class of its own at this point in time.

I have made repeated jokes on swtor forums regarding anthem and EA star wars games in general, and how its swtor to the rescue... yet again. Simple fact is that EA cant make anything good out of its current leadership and model. Just by having the star wars name, the could easily make a game to outdo WOW most every corner, but thats leadership and vison EA doesnt have, because they cant look 5 ft without thinking of dollar signs. Obviously that shooter fodder and sports crap sells well, and of course there is dragon age and other Bioware games, and there is even a new mmo star wars game being made, but whether its shelved or not remains to be seen.

Probably the main thing I don't like about ESO, there are others, but most are minor issues... guilds. I love being able to have 5 guilds, but having the auction houses based on the guilds you are in is ... just dumb. It has no basis in history, fantasy, logic, or even fantasy. It is just... nonsensical. That added to a non-searchable auction house system? Just makes me not want to bother using the system at all... and honestly, has driven me from playing the game for days/weeks at times, just because I know I need certain things, but to get them requires searching all of the vendors for most of my playtime, the game ends up just eating my available time simply to find an item or two (if I am lucky), or not finding them, just wasting my day trying to find.

That system is ridiculous. Just thinking about it makes me tired, and think of not logging in, but playing something else. Otherwise, ESO has the best customization in almost every way, and most interesting character builds that I have found, with the most immersive world and more. It is an awesome game, but the guild auction house system makes me think of just watching some random show on Netflix/Hulu as a better way to waste my time. I would pretty much rather do all sorts of other things than log in, just because I know I still need certain things, and will end up searching every vendor for 2-3 hours, and waste my entire day's worth of playtime, instead of actually playing, when I should be able to just log in, search a single place, go where I need to, buy it, and be off on my adventures.

So, for me, ESO should have a 9.5 score, but, because of that system? Maybe a 4... =(

Adore ESO but truthfully, hoping for a sandbox style MMORPG that doesn't include zombies. I friggin hate zombies.

What I miss in this game:

    Targeting players for emotes.
    Non linear questing.
    Spatial chat that encourages RP.
    Vendor Sales.
    Ability to create macros.

Yes and no, lore and combat is the main points for me staying here but mmos like wow have achievement mounts and so much more to do for achievement hunters and all don't require using a digital store. But wow is outdated in graphic, its story is forcing faction war that makes up every expansion and its combat bores me now after I played eso

Counter-argument for all of the WoW postives in my opinion is that its been going for well over a decade now, ESO is around 3-4+ years old. So in comparison WoW has had a lot more time too "come into its own" it also has the unique distinction of being the best of its time and as a result has the largest following (Partially due to the warcraft games and the communities it generated).

Like people preach how good vanilla wow was but if i am perfectly honest its just nostalgia. It was a pile of <Insert foul language here>. You can see the nostalgia effect when you heard the crowd reaction too the WoW Classic announcement.

ESO is better imo and will become much more as time goes on. One thing ZoS needs to do though is stop putting the cost of these chapters up for the selling price of a fully fledged AAA game. In comparison the only thing WoW does better is that its expansions bring way more content and end up being cheaper as well. Something ZoS really need to do something about.

    To me, yes.

Let's look at the competition -

WoW: Likely considered the best by most, but I don't care for the style anymore of MMO. Played for 10 years

FFXIV: It's WoW... but with a a FF skin. I played FFXIV for about 3 years now. It's... boring.

Tera: LOL. I mean, Tera is OK since it's F2P and I paly it a little on Xbox right now, but... yeah... no.

BDO: Do you like PVP? Cause... it's PVP more or less.. because the PVE is garbage.

Rift, Neverwinter, GW2: Rift was great, but it just kinda died. Honestly, probably my other favorite game but it died... Neverwinter is OK too but... IDK kinda generic. GW2 is actually very good. I can't really knock it. It's a great MMO.
